I'm reminded of "Rebecca" of which I have the MGM version. The Criterion release was supposedly better so I purchased it during a 50% off sale. To be honest, to my eyes, I really can't see much, if any, difference between the two and I feel like I wasted $20. Obviously, I can only speak for myself and my almost 50-year old eyes.
I see some improvement with the Criterion release of Rebecca, but it was the best-looking of the three titles in the MGM set. Notorious is a considerable upgrade, and the biggest difference should come with Spellbound (assuming it is still on the cards, as we all hope).

I'm thinking The Great Escape will be an upgrade in PQ. Understand your approach, but not sure I have the same restraint.

Ugh, Husbands. Gotta say Pauline Kael was spot-on about this one. Total stinker. A Woman Under the Influence it isn't.

Also, if they were going to do a John Sturges title, too bad it's not Bad Day at Black Rock. That said, The Great Escape isn't bad.

Still anxiously awaiting a Criterion Come and See announcement. Maybe next month...

Well, it does have more than last month's Leave Her to Heaven and that's full price as well.

I'll also say Dance Girls Dance is my favorite of the month's covers. Love the color palette.

Both volumes are on the channel - check some of them out first unless money isn't a concern. They were worth buying for me due to a handful of films that will probably never be available separately but it's kind of hard to recommend a blind buy

I love Husbands and it makes a great double feature with Mikey and Nicky but I also wish Criterion got BDABR because they might have put the commentary on it! The recently released Warner one doesn't have it.

Bad Day is out.

And as far as I know, Criterion hasn’t released a title that had a Warner Archive release.

Jeez, I didn't realize the bare bones on that one either.

Surprisingly sold my TT disc for 20 bucks, so I'll break even at least.

Peeps. Can you please vote for which Mizugoghi film I should watch first out of the Fallen women Eclipse set.
I can't wait to watch them all, just wondering what your choice would be can put all 4 in order if you want.
Besides, gotta watch the extended version of IAMMMMW first

Will need to get a case holder for the 4 films instead of the 4 slim cases
  • Women of the Night
  • Street of Shame
  • Osaka Elegy
  • Sisters of the Gion

Yeah, Gacivory, something told me you'd be most interested in "Husbands"... not sure what it was....

I saw Husbands years ago but my take on it was some guys got together and said “let’s get drunk and make a movie about guys getting drunk.” I’m sure there was more to it than that, but that was my impression at the time. The film is a mess, but an interesting mess.

Overall a great month. I’m probably most excited about Six Moral Tales because, 1. I love Rohmer, and 2. it means that Criterion is still in the upgrade business.

Beyond ecstatic that Six Moral Tales is back in print and will be getting that Day 1. Also, great news about The Great Escape which I also will be getting Day 1.

Wonder what is going with Rohmer's Comedies and Proverbs series since Kino's version of Pauline at the Beach went OOP on January 1? Wonder if Criterion will release that trilogy here or to just go ahead and get the upcoming reissue of Arrow's boxset this June.

My first Criterion purchases were Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, and Yojimbo/Sanjuro in the DVD days, and I became a huge fan of his work after, and later bough titles like Ikiru, and Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, etc..
I've long been a champion of Stray Dog as it's been one of my most requested upgrades and one of my favorite Kurosawa's. Wonder what is going on with the unwillingness to upgrade this as there are Japanese and French Blus of it available unless the elements aren't all that great or something?

I definitely watch them in order of their release dates. Save Street of Shame for last. Underated highly. But that's Mizoguchi in a nutshell these days.

Was gonna watch that one first

Dunno what that says about me if I really want to see these films given their shared topic

Just guessing here but I would think Memories of Murder will get out this year since it has already had a restoration run in theaters. Harder to say with Parasite, I would think Universal probably has a decent window with that one, maybe a year?
