That's good news to me. I like the packaging on the ones so far.

What about the Kurosawa box from Japan? Could that be worthwhile instead?

The Japanese boxset will not offer English subtitles. That being said, the HD transfers will be very strong - the films have been fully restored (I am unaware of US or European licensing deals for these as of this moment).

It would seem odd they would have a rights issue on the title because it is more than likely owned by the same company as all the other releases Criterion has issued on DVD for his films. Otherwise I would say the DVD will go out of print along with other films by the director.

Unless it is an isolated incident... would seem odd, I would guess Criterion was far along in the release process on the BD - I wonder if the discs were pressed yet etc?

They still are able to sale the standard DVD version.

A lot of people will be saddened.
Actually, I was checking out Criterion's site, and after noticing that Ran was no longer listed as an upcoming Blu title, I checked the page of the standard DVD. It's apparently gone OOP as well.

Seeing as how I was holding off on picking this title up until the Blu was released, I promptly bought the DVD on Half.com for about $16. That'll have to do for now.

That is sad... most stores have the standard DVD in stock still so the copies will sort of run out eventually. Sometimes it takes them a month or so.

I love their cover art for Ran.

I would guess things transpired during the process of releasing RAN to the point that issues were brought up and then they lost all rights. That is too bad. I can't imagine which company would end up releasing it in the US next. Criterion's namesake can usually sell a title more so then not so to not have let's say their endorsement so to speak sometimes titles are overlooked.

Got "The 400 Blows" in the mail today........ pleasant surprise, but doesn't do much to ease the pain of the "Ran" announcement

It's an absolute heartbreaker
To sound like a teenage girl, I was SO looking forward to Ran on Blu-ray. If this news is as bad as it appears right now and "indefinitely" means "never", should we be getting worried about the implications for future Kurosawa Blu-ray releases by Criterion?

Ichi The Killer is delayed?

So it's not coming out this Tuesday (March 31st)? If not when is it supposed to come out?

Is there a link to where it says that Ichi The Killer is delayed?

I seriously hope this is only a rumor and not for real.

Hello,

At this point, I would not write off Criterion yet.

Default Pre-Orders back up

Just got this in my Inbox, thought everyone would like to know:
March 27, 2009

We have some good news: preorders are back at criterion.com! We’ve worked out some kinks in the system, and starting today you can once again order future Criterion titles and your credit card won’t be charged until your order is ready to ship. To mark the occasion, we’ve set up a special promotion code for our newsletter subscribers and their friends. Type in this promotion code, PRE10, during checkout, and you’ll receive an additional 10% off your order total. And, please, spread the news!

There’s something for everyone among the April and May titles now available for preorder. Charles Laughton’s Oscar-winning, mutton-munching role in The Private Life of Henry VIII headlines this month’s Korda Eclipse series, while Robert Mitchum fans will revel in a lost gem of 1970s cinema, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, which director Peter Yates has said is even better than his more familiar classic Bullitt. An early Stephen Frears thriller, The Hit, starring Terence Stamp, John Hurt, and Tim Roth, gets the Criterion treatment, as does John Huston’s long-unavailable adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood, coming to DVD for the first time. Whether you like science or music or just mind-bending visuals, you’ll love Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé, which features a ninety-minute original score by Yo La Tengo. And for those who aren’t afraid to get down and dirty, a collection of Shohei Imamura’s underworld classics—Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes: 3 Films by Shohei Imamura—joins Nagisa Oshima’s notoriously explicit erotic masterpiece In the Realm of the Senses and its chilling companion piece Empire of Passion, all in new Criterion special editions.

So pass along this limited-time offer, which runs until April 15, to all of your friends and family.

Happy viewing,

The Criterion Collection

.

With the extra 10% promo code mentioned above that means a total of 30% off pre-orders!
Might even beat out amazon! The shipping is definatly faster, just got my copies of The 400 Blows and The last metro today...geesh.

I wonder if Ran's delay has anything to do with the Japanese version being released seperatly on May 25. I am wondering if maybe Jesnet asked Criterion to hold off their release to prevent any chance of reverse importation (the Japanese release would have come out 13 days after the US version if the US version wasn't put on indefinite hold).

That's my one hope here; that Jesnet are making Criterion hold off their release of Ran until X months have passed after their own Japanese release. Fingers crossed.
And I'm hoping that the good doctor's wink means he knows something that the rest of us don't

I take it that Sympathy has been verified as Region B only?

Do you know how the quality is? Never seen this one just heard of it.

I wish Warner would release Performance on Blu but that is prob a long shot.

I see. Not much.

Thanx for the info.

It would be cool to see band of outsiders and a woman is a woman on blu sometime in the near future.
