Looking forward to however they release Thank You and Good Night. The film looks ripe for rediscovery.

Just ordered Six Moral Tales direct from Criterion. I am not at all familiar with Rohmer, and this is a blind-buy. However, I became very interested reading Beaver's recent review of the set. After prevaricating over how best to use my $10 gift, and with Criterion still offering 30% discount, I figured it's a good time to get acquainted with both the director and these films. Plus, it took me over the threshold to earn a $50 certificate - which will be great come the next Flash Sale.

Does criterion.com ever ship early for pre-orders like BB seems to?

They should since they should be shipped by the same company out of ALLIANCE Warehouse -- at least I think BBY Criterion's still come from Shepherdsville.

I have typically gotten my orders from them on the Monday the week the titles are released on the Tuesday when ordering from them direct. This was as recent as the other day with the Grand Budapest (a must own, by the way).

I can concur. Typically I'll get shipment notifications the Thursday/Friday before release with delivery the Monday or Tuesday of release week.

Just curious but, is the general consensus that Criterion has Hammer's The Curse of Frankenstein? Thanks in advance!

I thought it was that Scream had it, but no one really knows at this point.

There was a rumor Criterion had Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) but
that seems to have died down.

With every Hammer Frankenstein film being available by August, I'm just getting antsy waiting for the original. Very much hoping it comes by September/October from Scream or whoever domestically.

If Criterion had all the films they're rumoured to have, they'd have a backlog of around 200 movies to release

They have around that many unreleased Shochiku titles.

I also own the UK (BBC) DVDs of both series, precisely because they were uncut (I had previously owned the Acorn DVD, but ditched it when I got the Brit releases). I haven't watched them in a while, though.

I'm tempted by the new(ish) BBC BD of Tinker, though I'd like to see some reviews of it first. The scan of the backcover says it's 1080p, though the database entry says 1080/50i (which may be a carry-over from the Acorn release)
I'm waiting on a review of the BBC release, as well. The comps put up on DVDBeaver for the Acorn blu....ugh, no thank you. I'm dying to see Alec Guinness' interpretation, but have no clue where to see it with somewhat satisfactory PQ.

Hey, Criterion......

Everyone's asking why Criterion don't venture into 4K
And there's a very simple reason why they don't- 4K discs are region free
No?

You are correct, sir. And that's a good point. That certainly complicates things.

No, that doesnt matter. It is just that they don't feel that UHD sales are enough to justify the cost.

It would be part but not all of the reason. Criterion's Bergman box is region free as well.

I think what the major stumbling block is that Criterion wants to be consistent in its releases, and not have to each time answer the question of Whether X title will get a UHD or be blu-ray only? UHD may many times be not possible for Criterion because the restoration was not 4K or the rights-holder forbids a region-free release. It probably doesn't want a situation where people hold off buying a blu-ray title thinking that they may down the line do a UHD release.

Just doesn't make sense though. It doesn't cost that much more to buy a bluray disc vs a uhd disc. I've burnt a couple of my own hi res projects onto uhd discs.

They could even do something like TT and only make 3000 of them.

Mastered in 4k then converted to 1080p, that's the best Criterion can do?

According to GeoffD, the glass replication master for a UHD can cost north of ten grand, a vast amount more than for a BD. For any moderately sized outfit that must be the biggest stumbling block.
