If I kept all of the DVDs that I've upgraded, I'd need a lot more shelves than I have space for.
My own personal reasons for keeping a DVD is
1.) If the DVD looks somehow better than the Blu-ray (Look at The Killer (1989) Blu-ray release and compare it to the DVD. They look nearly identical except in color)

2.) If they have any of that fun secret extras in there. (The Incredibles DVD has a good amount of extras and since it was the highest selling DVD of 2005, it shouldn't be that hard to find a copy nowadays. I don't think the 4K or Blu-ray editions have these extras in them anymore A Tale of Two Sisters has a good amount of extras and has a few secrets but I'm keeping it of course because it's one of the few Korean films that doesn't have a Blu-ray release yet.)

Other than that, I would also have the same reasons as you do

No. Not from Criterion, anyway. There are these non-US editions, though:

Britain, Germany, France, and Spain.

The database here says the German edition is region-free, with the others saying "A,C untested". The Spanish one is from Sony, so it's probably region-free (and not a bootleg). The French edition(s) says "B" on the back cover.

The real John Mulvaney was the friends we made along the way.

Still listed as a contact for issues and sales inquiries. I believe Criterion changed from having "Mulvaney" answer emails about titles, to a generic box. The wording on the site changed to the following (from memory, it used to direct you to Mulvaney saying something like "he lives for this stuff"):

What are the upcoming titles? How can I suggest a title?

We announce all our upcoming titles on our website as soon as we can make them public. Also, we announce upcoming titles in our newsletter, which we also encourage you to sign up for to get special offers and contest giveaways. Click here to visit our sign-up page for more information. If you would like to suggest a title, please write to suggestions@criterion.com. Though we are not able to personally reply to all suggestions, our acquisitions staff reads all of them and appreciates hearing from you.

Jon Mulvaney hasn't replied to a few of my Criterion film requests. So I'm guessing he died or he was within my mind all this time

Nothing. I'm surprised they didn't do a standalone when "Easy Rider" and "Five Easy Pieces" got individual releases.

Everything but the French disc should be region free as it's the same Sony disc.

Thanks. I'll pick up the UK or German release in due course.

Surprised there is no Criterion. I thought Bogdanovich had a close (consultative?) relationship with them.

If I had a camp, or was renting a cabin for a week or whatever, I'd probably just bring the Sony with me to use. Or I'd not bother with movies at all, and just bring books to read.

It makes sense. For me, right now, I have room for all my DVD's and BD's, so that's not an issue. But if I needed space, then it would make sense to get rid of the extra DVDs unless they had material that is not available on the upgrade copies.

Like Dailyan, I was surprised that it didn't get one when two others from the BBS set got ones. As for Bogdanovich, he (and his ascot) seems often to be one of the experts who get brought in for extras, but I don't know if he otherwise has any consultative status at Criterion.

It's still there, under 'Contact Us':

To report a technical problem with your DVD or Blu-ray disc; for television, public performance, and nontheatrical sales; for queries, threats, or bribes related to our future release schedule; for praise and/or criticism of our releases or the state of the film world in general; to report that a DVD booklet has been mauled by a dog or baby; for clarification of the information on our FAQ page; to gripe about region encoding; or for any and all Criterion-related anecdotes or curiosities, please e-mail: Jon Mulvaney (he lives for this stuff!) mulvaney@criterion.com
Whenever I've emailed 'Mulvaney' after 2018, I've received a response from orders AT criterion DOT com, most recently from an 'Arie' and a 'Kseniya'. Though my emails have related to issues with damage and things of that nature, not suggesting titles or asking questions. The one time I did send an email in that vein (in late 2018), I got a response from the Mulvaney email.

I got a response from Mulvaney in April this year about a defective disc I had and how to do the replacement. In fact the return address had me list Attn: Jon Mulvaney.

Of course, this was in the middle of the craziness and no one would be able to send out the replacement until the restrictions have been lifted. So the discs are sitting on my do-to-later pile.

So as of April, Mulvaney is still there.

Curious. I emailed Mulvaney about a month ago, about a damaged disc in an order I made back then. I have not gotten a reply yet. This reminds me that I need to send a follow-up.

I wouldn't be surprised if "The Last picture Show" EVENTUALLY got a standalone blu-ray release....just not soon enough for me ! One of my all time favorite films

I thought "Jon Mulvaney" wasn't a real person, that it's just a fictional name that anyone who handles customer service operates under.

I need to say I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't keep the DVD if I've upgraded to a BD. However, faced with replacing my remote control for my 10 year old Sony blu-ray player or just shelling out money for a whole new player, I decided to just spend $15 to get a replacement remote control (the down arrow doesn't work anymore), cause this blu-ray player still is fine! (yeah, I know, obsolescence is pretty trendy these last few decades). Hell, I still am watching movies on my 48 inch Phillips HDTV (and its 13 years old now)! Still looks great... plus I have yet to purchase a 4K UHD release, so I guess I'm not as up to date as everyone out there. I don't care, I love my 1080p like you wouldn't believe.

Most of my DVDs I upgrade I got for cheap so I just take them to the OP Shop.

Do you folks know when the Criterion 1/2 Odd Sale is? I did a Search in this Thread and came-up empty.

It's June-July, and October-November right? Is it approximately the Same Time Every Year? My memory is that it's always a few weeks just before something I want is Released and I have to wait 'till the next Sale to pick it up.
