I agree. Criterion is no country for No Country For Old Men to reside in.

Do you think Criterion will release more Fox titles like Sunrise, The Grapes of Wrath, or Laura? I haven't bought those yet so if the same thing happens to those that did with All About Eve I'd rather wait and pick up the CC edition. I just hope they're not in a crappy digipack. In the case of Sunrise it'd actually be cheaper on sale coming from them than the Fox Blu-ray has been for most of its existence.

Until the end of the World does have a hefty runtime. However, several factors made the film easily digestible for me. I actually finished the entire thing in one sitting (using the break between discs as an intermission).

Until the End of the World is set in a great variety of locations and the mood of the film changes with each setting. There's a dreamy ambiance at times. The soundtrack is hypnotic.

The narrative shifts from a globe-trotting spy thriller to a philosophical science-fiction drama, exploring a patchwork of concepts. There's an undercurrent of humor too. It's an idiosyncratic cocktail but it works.

The narrative is prophetic in a few ways. It simultaneously satirizes and critiques our dependence on technology. It questions whether a functional utopia would be possible. And it suggests that if we were able to witness our own dreams, we would be so narcissistic we would become addicted to them.

While the plot does wander in places, it also takes the time to explore its characters, particularly once the plot pivots to Australia during the second half of the picture. Until the End of the World is by no means a perfect picture, but you can tell it was a labor of love for Wenders and there's a spontaneity about the entire project that feels fresh and original.

Default FINALLY watched this!

Chungking Express (1994)

HONG KONG 1994: TWO COPS. TWO LOVE STORIES.

Chungking Express is a difficult movie to describe, even though both stories in it are fairly simple. I was first introduced to its director, Wong Kar-wai, over a decade ago - via his first (and only?) American film, My Blueberry Nights, which I loved but very few people saw (I'll have to revisit that one soon). I'm not sure what took me so long to get to my second Wong Kar-wai film, but I finally watched my Chungking Express Blu-ray over the weekend.

The movie is split into two stories - both about cops who frequent the same take-out street eatery, the "Midnight Express" (for which the film is partially named). The first cop (Takeshi Kaneshiro) is reeling from a bad breakup and falls in love with a mysterious criminal in dark sunglasses and a blonde wig (Brigitte Lin). The second cop (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung) gets involved with a flighty server (Faye Wong) who takes his food orders. The owner of the eatery (Jinquan Chen) interacts with both cops and is one of the highlights of the movie.

The camerawork will leave you with whiplash at times, but it's a great introduction to the real Hong Kong. Instead of seeing the shiny tourist areas, the movie takes you to the gritty streets, grimy back-alleys, and commonplace eateries. This approach makes the viewer feel like a native instead of a traveler. The movie also has a novel way of marking time: focusing on food can expiration dates in various ways.

The first story - about the cop and the criminal - was the more enjoyable of the two for me, and I was happy it didn't go in the predictable formulaic route I was expecting. The second story is weirder, with the cop talking to inanimate objects and the girl behaving very bizarrely right under his nose. It didn't quite work for me the way the first half did, but both sections and sets of characters have their charms.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

My haul... BRUCE LEE: HIS GREATEST HITS, LONE WOLF AND CUB and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. I always go for just three titles per sale as it's my lucky number and any more would just be gluttonous. $130 for 12 movies ain't too shabby. These three titles have some of my favorite packaging artwork as well, which makes this sale pick-up even more special.

Great job BN. Maybe I'll start buying all my titles direct during the flash sales and cancel my membership.

Is there any way to contact management for a particular BN store by email?

Try to grab the Eureka version of Sunrise, its region free also:

It's generally cheaper than the US version. Though I wouldn't wait too long if you want it.

I picked up a number of titles at my Barnes & Noble this weekend that I've wanted for some time.

As a side note, I'm kind of frustrated that Criterion has yet to put out The Furies on Blu-ray. It's one of my favorite westerns and I've wanted to add it to my collection for a long time. I relented and decided to spend the $20 on the DVD edition just so I could watch it.

Also incorrect though exchange of open media should be different than return. Not sure of a specific phone number, but obviously start with main CSR and work your way up stairs.

OTOH, a broken case hub might not rise to the level of an unplayable disc, but damaged or defective is sort of up to the consumer, not the retailer within reason

"Items That Cannot Be Returned

NOOK digital content and other downloaded purchases, including but not limited to downloadable PDFs for SparkNotes and Quamut products, Access Codes, gift cards, and shrink-wrapped items that have been opened, are not returnable. However if you are having compatibility or quality issues with your content, please contact us for assistance. "

The contact is has changed apparently so likely just the normal CSR email

and more specifically under the Return Policy which specifically address open media
"For more information about our store return policy, click here."

The back of my receipt has that exact language

"Open music CDs, DVDs, vinyl records........... may not be returned, and can be exchanged only for the same product and only if defective"

Exchange only not return of open media is a pretty common exclusion in all retail stores.

I've exchanged damaged media to B&N before with no problem. Last summer, I ordered the Ingmar Bergman set and picked it up in store. When I brought it home, I notice there was a slash mark through the plastic that had cut into the front cover (probably from someone carelessly opening a box of them with a boxcutter). Even worse, though, I found the binder book inside that holds the discs had been crushed to the point that some of the discs were near-impossible to take out; one of the corners was also badly dog-eared, as though the binder had been dropped. I still don't know how it had sustained this damage unless it was returned, re-shrinkwrapped, and put out on the floor, but I brought it back with my receipt and exchanged it for a pristine one with no problem. The woman at the desk was perfectly fine about it, and said she understood given that it's Criterion and is like "an investment."

But in the lower corner is the contact information at least. My 1st advice is to try a second time at the store (or different store if you have) and see if a different manager will follow their written policy -- point it out to them if necessary. Or call online have them exchange by mail as a defective product -- no reason to mention the defect and I think they'd pay for return shipping for a defective item (or just let you keep it)

Can anyone confirm that they're the same transfers? I wish there was a caps-a-holic comparison because on this site they look slighty different. The Eureka has a slightly greener hue whereas the Fox is true black & white.

Fox:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...82&position=11

Eureka:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...696&position=8

Here the Fox is darker and more accurate-looking

Fox:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...82&position=17

Eureka:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...696&position=3

I don't know if it's a case of the caps being a few years older, from 2009, or if they really are slightly different from being released a few years apart or the Eureka was off in the encoding/colors.
