Just finished "Ernie Pyle's Story of G.I. Joe" on TCM. Nice performances from Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith. What an astonishing and devastating film. Any chance Criterion picks this up and gives it the treatment it deserves (from a special features/academic standpoint)?

I was waiting for a New Year's Clue to see if there was any indication of a Kurosawa set this year, before getting the individual blu-rays. It seems that there won't be a clue this year, so I guess I'll start upgrading my Kurosawa DVD collection. I bet the box set will be announced as soon as I upgrade all of them, LOL!

^I already took several for the team. I got all the Kurosawa blu's I wanted as soon as they came into a 50% sale. The one I want most now is Dersu Uzala.

I'm still holding out for a KUROSAWA set and even an OZU set, though hope might be dimming for the former and I'm guessing Ozu flew off Criterion's radar quite awhile ago. Although I certainly have enough shelves bursting with stuff to watch for years, I still get antsy wanting more!

I don’t think we will get an Ozu set but we should see Floating Weeds and/or Tokyo Twilight in 2021 hopefully based on existing 4k restorations and their last Ozu release being in 2019.

The Kurosawa set has to be on the cards though given how long ago the last Kurosawa release was, and it would definitely sell very well for them.

When is Ozu's 200th birthday?

I hope they find a way to continue the clues though. I miss looking forward to it every month! I understand they want to respect his passing, but the monthly clue is great marketing tool they shouldn’t abandon completely and should continue the tradition he started. I can’t speak for him but I would imagine he would want other artists continue his work

has there been any murmurings of if Criterion might be releasing 'The Painted Bird' since they have access to IFC's titles ? I'm been eyeing the import but am hesitating.

Under their radar means they don't see them. On their radar would mean they do see them.

Maybe they'll do a 'Postwar Kurasawa' box set - Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, etc.

Similar to the mini-niche Buñuel set.

I wish they would do more British cinema - specifically Peter Greenaway.

Since there's no new years drawing, here are my new years hopes:

Neko Z Alenky
Top Hat
Cover Girl
Wuthering Heights (39')
Hour of the Wolf
Love and Basketball
A Woman is a Woman
La Strada
Nights of Cabiria
Spirit of the Beehive
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
Brining up Baby
The Housemaid (1960)

Feel free to call me out if any of these are indefinitely happening or which ones are unlikely or just not happening.

What’s the chance of getting Christine Edzard’s Little Dorit?

I’d love an upgrade of Spirit of the Beehive. Also Z, but I remember they might’ve lost the rights. Also upgrade the Lean’s plus his movies that haven’t seen a Blu release!

Also Raise the Red Lantern would be great!

Why would hope be dimming for a Kurosawa set?

...seems like a no-brainer to me.

It’s interesting how Criterion chose to empathize one shot from one film for the cover of the Bergman set.

A bold choice imo.

If they did the same thing for a potential Kurosawa set, which shot would you hope they choose?

...something from Seven Samurai would be my guess.
