That's like I have David Cronenberg's "Dead Ringers" on the great Scream/Shout Factory blu ray Collector's Edition blu ray, plus I had bought it on blu ray from an earlier Australian release before the Scream one was released. Plus, I have the Warner Bros. 2004 DVD, too!

And yet, I was in a Goodwill Store(!) a while back and actually found the original, Criterion "Dead Ringers" DVD release, from way back in 1998 or 1999, and their DVDs there at the Goodwill were three for FIVE DOLLARS, and this was the classic Criterion that was so sought after for a while for being OOP. How could I NOT get it, LOL?

So, I have that film on VHS, Criterion DVD, Warner DVD, Australian import blu ray, and Scream Factory blu ray. I'll be damned if I'll ever buy it again, though.

It was one of my earliest Criterion purchases and one of the few I kept. Back then I couldn't afford to keep hold of as many discs and I used to do a lot of trades with Criterions just to get to see the films, but Cronenberg became an early favourite and I couldn't let go of that. With Scream releasing it I imagine it's never coming back to the collection but I'll still buy a 4k from anyone.

I still have several of the more 'holy grail' early Criterion DVDs, just for collector's purposes, like I still have that cruddy old first "Salo" release from 1998. Amazing how, for years, people were paying hundreds of dollars for that thing when you couldn't give it away, now, with all of the beautiful and vastly superior editions, since. I still keep it around as a relic, though, LOL. That's another one I have several times over.

I have the 1991 Waterbearer Films VHS tape of it. I have the 1998 Criterion DVD. I have the 2008 Criterion two disc re-issue. I have the 2011 Criterion blu ray upgrade of the 2008 release. Then, I have a BFI UK box set of Pasolini films with their edition of "Salo" in there, with a lot of different features. One time, I ordered some obscure film from a guy in Italy, and he threw a bonus "Salo" DVD in there, for me, too, LOL. I simply thanked him for the extra gift, not telling him I already have it a half dozen times over, LOL.

I've already been collecting things since the mid-1980s (VHS), early 2000s (DVD), and 2010s (blu ray). I've got THOUSANDS of things, and ran out of room long ago, LOL. Yet, a number of things I've already repeatedly bought. My current TV is 1080p, but is only like 42 inches or something. I have Region Free blu ray players, and HDMI and 1080p. I think that's all good enough for me for now. I'm not buying all of this, again (I say that, now, LOL...)

I finally got around to watching Rainer Werner Fassbinder's World on a Wire last night, and I absolutely LOVE the film. Who knew that a 1973 German made-for-TV film, written and directed by a 27-year-old, would be one of the most dazzling and inventive sci-fi flicks I've ever seen.

I know its themes have been retread dozens of times by now, by many other sci-fi movies; but "World on a Wire" probably still holds the crown for executing them so perfectly. The writing, the pacing, the constant sense of paranoia, the way everything slowly unfolds in an increasingly disturbing way... excellent, excellent movie.

Also - can I just say, I love the pure AESTHETIC of this film. All that 1970's German retro-futurism? Shot on 16mm film, with a healthy dose of thick, vintage film grain? Ummphh. Inject it straight in my veins!

Anyone have any recommendations for other sci-fi flicks in the collection, similar to this one? I realize that Fassbinder wasn't exactly a sci-fi guy, and "World on a Wire" was his only sci-fi movie, but I should probably check out the rest of his filmography anyway. He seems like a very special filmmaker.

Someone on Criterionforum was kind enough to provide the list of U.S rightsholders for the other films in the Yimou/Li boxset:

Sony also has several of these films in the U.S. (The Story of Qiu Ju, Curse of the Golden Flower, Coming Home). I don't believe MGM has Raise the Red Lantern and To Live anymore so at least those are probably up for grabs, along with Red Sorghum (an ex-New Yorker title) and Ju Dou (which had a very early DVD release from Pioneer but has been unavailable for years, outside of a truly wretched DVD from some sketchy outfit called "Razor").
Good to know. I was curious where all U.S. rights were currently sitting for these titles, but I went in for this IMPRINT Box Set regardless, as I think there's basically no way this kind of set would come together in the U.S. or even the U.K.

I had just picked up the 'Shanghai Triad' U.S. Blu and finally 'Coming Home' and 'Shadow' -- so you can thank my karma, as well!! But this set (and its extras) is worth a double-dip on certain titles, for me.

I still have the original U.S. DVDs for 'Red' 'To Live' and 'Qiu Ju' and have held onto them for dear life!

Wonder if Criterion could perhaps think about the other Zhang Yimous in-between, like 'Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles' etc.? But obviously any one of these key Gong Li collabs would sell better for them.

I'd move the old relic Criterion DVDs when they would replace them (like Sid and Nancy), but kept hanging onto ones they released even if I had a better edition elsewhere (like Robocop). But just started trying to move some of them for room and money purposes. Just listed Blood for Dracula when Severin announced their new edition.

I haven't gone 4k yet either! Plus my TV is also 1080p AND is also 42 inches! Not sure how old yours is but my Philips HDTV is from 2007 (one of the earlier HDTVs), but it still looks and works fine.

Also I've collected VHSs, DVDs and BDs too (no laserdiscs though), and I have a region-free player I can hook up to my Macbook Pro to play any disc I want.

Anyway, I just had to respond since we might be clones.

here another clone! I still have a Panny plasma from 2013, and in no rush to replace it. I have seen properly UHD bluray on a good tv, and yeah it looked great, but not enough to rush to buy a new tv. And yeah me too Im collecting films since VHS days (laserdisc, dvd, bluray). I do have some UHD blurays though, most of the time if a normal bluray is included I buy the UHD package because it also have the premium packaging wich I have a soft spot for.

I see myself eventually upgrade to UHD, when my Panny bites the dust. But that can be a while, I remember the tv I had before this one (also a Panny plasma) and was still working perfectly after 12 years. So, knocks on wood.

I'm not yet 4K-ready, either, but I'm planning on getting an Xbox Series X and a proper TV set by the end of the year. That'll make me less hesitant to buy UHDs that don't come with a Blu-ray.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. I finally broke down and got a new 4K TV a few months ago and will probably grab that 4K player before the end of the year when I get some free money. I haven't been buying the UHD releases that don't have a Blu included, since I don't yet have that 4K player.

I haven't gone 4K yet either. Well, I guess it depends how you define that. We do have a couple 4K TV's in the house, but I never use them. They're nothing special. One of them was only a couple hundred dollars. But I also have an OPPO 203, which is a UHD player. That's connected to my main TV, which is a 58" Panasonic Plasma. I just love that TV and it works perfectly. So I just can't see replacing it right now.

But the Criterion Laserdisc is the one to own- it has the early Shorts that Cronenberg made!

If Criterion ever goes exclusively 4K I will drop them faster than I drop my pants when Montezuma's Revenge comes a callin'.
