Even though I don't think Kane is in the top 10 all time list, I will grab that one on 4K. I have the 4K TV, so I just need to get the 4K player, which will probably have to wait until around the Holidays. Probably will grab A Hard Days Night when Criterion releases that.

This is excellent news. It was long overdue.
While I will not be purchasing these films as I moved exclusively to streaming a couple of months ago, I hope Criterion will be providing upgrades for these titles on iTunes. I assume these 4K releases will have a $49.99 disc MSRP. |

On the off chance that any of this waffle ever reaches Criterion's ears, I just wanna say that YOU CAN'T HALF-ARSE THE COMPRESSION ON THESE UHDS LIKE YOU DO ON BLU-RAY. 4K HDR is something that can fall apart awfully quickly if the encoding isn't on point, and the "meh, it's good enough" attitude you have for BD isn't going to be good enough for UHD.

![]() As for the 4K announcements thank the gods they are finally out and now all the will they or won't they discussions can slowly slink out the side door as only they can and do slink. I love 4K myself, but not at the expense of the rest of my collection. These first titles don't scream MUST HAVE to me, but KANE and HARD DAY'S have some appeal and may find their way in, depending on the price (which I'm imagining will be high?). I saw THE RED SHOES once in IB Technicolor 35mm under optimum theatrical conditions and still didn't love it as much as I thought I would, but damn if visions of that blossoming color in 4K at home don't kick start my imagination. The rest of the announced titles are all fine on Blu. YMMV. |

Regarding pricing..considering Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu-rays have a similar MSRP of $40 and their most recent UHD at $55, I don’t see an MSRP of $55/$60 for Criterion 4K to be too out of line. I just hope the final product delivers.

But the difference is that it was institutions like schools and libraries and such that had no interest whatsoever in future-proofing that pushed the DVD decision. They were NEVER going to want the BD. It’s a completely different situation than your average consumer who will have that 4k disc ready if and when they jump - especially if they keep the price increase relatively reasonable. And that’s more likely with a combo pack. It’s all about packaging.

Oh, and if we get the giant clunky cardboard box Dual Format packages for each 4K/BD release like Criterion did a few years ago for BD/DVD, then I'm out.
My storage space for my collection is reaching the endgame. |
