GREAT REVIEW! someone (who is obviously smart, charming, and handsome) predicted 5's across the board...... and they were right

Once again, Pro-B's review has added fuel to my fire of anticipation!

Svet, Are you Swedish? and if so, who are the emerging Swedish film makers?

I am excited about this release as well. I can remember the time and place I originally experienced this film. Very haunting and beautiful. This is a film that has always been easier for me to relate to great poetry (TS Eliot's Wasteland....fragments against the shore) than film because the narrative is so elusive, but it's cinematography is amongst the greatest is film history.

I would hope Tomas Alfredson - who did Let the Right One In - is on that list.

(But I'm American.)

Releases like "The Seventh Seal" make me angry. I wish all releases could look so good!

Hello Beta Man,

No, I am not Swedish. But...

Speaking of emerging Swedish filmmakers - though there are a couple of very good young directors I could mention to you, I would actually urge you to explore classic Swedish cinema. It is probably a good idea to look into Mai Zetterling's Älskande par a.k.a Loving Couples (1964) and especially the controversial Nattlek a.k.a Night Games (1966) - the first available on a very strong R1 Project X/ New Yorker DVD (buy it now because once it is sold out, that would be it), the second available on a R2 English-friendly Sweidsh DVD.

Of course, one could not talk about classic Swedish cinema without mentioning the sublime En kärlekshistoria a.k.a A Swedish Love Story (1970) - available on a fantastic, English-friendly, R2 Swedish DVD.

And off to the shadows I go again

Pro-B

Awesome movie! I've always been a big fan of Swedish movies (even though I'm Norwegian... ).

I didn't really think you were, just having a laugh
If Bay is a Bergman fan it doesn't really show in his body of work does it?

If Bay did The Seventh Seal remake..... the devil would spontaneously explode in a giant fire ball somewhere midway through the movie

Someone has to stop Bay before he ruins every classic there is.

Ah, Stellan Skarsgård is so great in that role! I think Al Pacino is one of the best actors around, but his performance in the American re-make is weak at the best compared to Skarsgård's brilliant performance in the Norwegian original.

And (as far as I know) the only Norwegian movie released by Criterion.

Seems like Howard's End won the Criterion vote on Amazon, got this mail today:

Last month, we offered customers the unique opportunity to vote for the next Blu-ray release from the Criterion Collection. We're excited to announce that "Howard's End [Blu-ray]" is the winning title and will be released from the Criterion Collection later this year. Why wait? You can pre-order "Howard's End- Criterion Collection [Blu-ray]" from Amazon.com today.

No date yet but my guess is that this is a August/September title. My vote was Kwaidan

Correct. I hope they release Flåklypa Grand Prix (Pinchville Grand Prix), since it is in my opinion the only other great norwegian movie.

Would be awesome to see that on Blu-ray.

A bit of a lost treassure in Norwegian cinema is Per Blom's film Is-Slottet (Ice Palace), based on Tarjei Vesaas' novel. This is about as dark as a movie can get. I get chills just by talking about it, and it trully is a masterpiece... and a perfect pick for a Criterion release.

I guess this would stir up quite some controversy in the US...
