Criterion sent out a gift certificate for charter Channel subscribers on 2/16 last year. The flash sale was on 2/23 (both Tuesdays). During the October flash sale, Criterion included a gift certificate for the day-before notice of the sale (10/18 and 10/19). As if it wasn't already obvious, of course, it's very likely the flash sale will be this upcoming Tuesday, though we've been saying that for the past month of Tuesdays).

On a separate topic, I'm curious about what others think will be Criterion's second foreign-language UHD. I'd like to take it for granted that Le cercle rouge will not be the only one, but I'm also expecting it to be another upgrade title and not a new-to-the-catalogue release. I guess the three major candidates would be The Seventh Seal, Breathless, and Seven Samurai, and I would like to think 8 1/2, which if I'm not mistaken would give them a worldwide UHD debut, is a strong possibility as well. I know they didn't put La strada on UHD, but I have a hard time believing 8 1/2 won't get that treatment. But perhaps a bit further separated from the Essential Fellini set.

I'd also like to hear what other realistic candidates there are for down the road. The 400 Blows of course. I'd love to see them revisit Wings of Desire and M. It would also be a great way to re-insert Grand Illusion into the collection. I believe it was also just recently posted that Criterion was in some way involved in producing a new 4K scan of The Rules of the Game. I'd like to think that they could also do what BFI isn't willing to do and get Wild Strawberries on 4K as well. I suppose a Wong Kar Wai is possible as well, inevitably using the new restorations. Something like Ali: Fear Eats the Soul would be awesome, but I'm not sure about that anytime soon. I'd love to read some more informed conjecture. Of course we're realistically talking years down the road at this point, the way Criterion works.

On another note, it's well past time to upgrade The Spirit of the Beehive...come on Criterion. I have no idea if there are suitable materials currently available for this, though. Does anybody else know if this has a newer restoration?

Sick. I just checked my email and I got one too. Can you use multiple coupons per order? I already have one that they emailed me back in December. Plus, my $10 coupon for the Citizen Kane replacement is on its way (hopefully it arrives before the sale) and now this charter subscriber coupon. But as it stands, right now I currently have $20 worth of coupons for the flash sale. That covers shipping to Canada.

EDIT: So yeah, you can add multiple coupons to a single order (as long as they're not from the same month - mine are from December and March). I just tried doing it and it knocked $20 off the items in my cart. Amazing.

Also the coupon emails always say "you can save it for an upcoming flash sale", so it doesn't necessarily mean there's one coming in the immediate future (my email from December said the same thing). But, it seems pretty likely that there will be one next Tuesday.

4K restorations were recently completed for both Breathless and The 400 Blows, so if I had to take a guess as to what their next foreign language UHD might be, it would be one of those two. We need some Godard in 4K. I'm also hoping that since Criterion has recently re-acquired the rights to some of their previously OOP Studio Canal titles, that Godard's Contempt is also somewhere in the pipeline. It would look stunning in 4K.

Breathless has a 4K release in the UK. So if you want Godard on 4K really badly, it’s available.

I'm aware of the UK release. That's why I said, seeing as how these films already have 4K masters ready to go, it is likely that Criterion will put them out on UHD, much like they're doing with Le cercle rouge, which also already has a 4K release in the UK.

I also followed it up by saying that I'm hoping Criterion also upgrades Contempt in 4K since they seem to be re-releasing some of their OOP Studio Canal titles, and that is one that is in need of a new restoration. The question was asked what we think Criterion's next foreign language UHD would be. We currently have NO Godard in 4K from Criterion.
