Which Kris Kristofferson would you like Criterion to release?

As a big western guy I'd love Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid first and foremost. Then I'd want these:

Trouble in Mind
Lone Star
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Blume in Love (never seen it, but love the director)

NO! The first three were weak sauce! 4 was when the series came alive! It had grit that you could crack a tooth on! Kris Kristofferson signed up to it for a reason!

This is becoming a common experience buying new discs, so can we talk about it?

I appreciate that Criterion is one of the few companies that continually stands by their products and offer replacements of damaged cases, booklets, discs, etc. And I know they stand by their product even years after purchase as they've come through for me several times now. But when you buy something brand new -- and from one of the pricier companies -- is it wrong to expect the item to be in "new" condition?

Like many of us here who have a large collection, I've begrudgingly accepted the current state of crappy packaging and new items arriving slightly dented or damaged. I also take into consideration that I'm often getting a good deal on an item and have reasonable expectations. Now I typically only ask to return an item if the damage to the case or booklet is severe, or if the disc looks badly damaged, so I'm really not that much of a stickler. I don't collect steelbooks or slipcases either.

So when I contact Criterion about this brand new very scratched disc I just received it really feels like gaslighting to be told to try and clean it. Which of course was the first thing I had done because I'm not an idiot or a monster. Haha. I own nearly 300 Criterion releases and used to buy their LDs as well. This just seems like a really strange new wrinkle since it's clearly a problem with their production. I have thousands of discs and I shouldn't have to recheck them annually for playability because they sent me damaged brand new items once. How do you even respond to this? "[We are] happy to send you a replacement disc if needed."

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
Thanks for writing us! Our discs are handpacked so smudges or scratches do crop up from time to time though it's not a common issue and the good news is that Blu-ray discs are fairly resilient and scratch resistant, but if needed, you can try cleaning your disc with water and a small amount of dishwashing soap. Even if your disc is brand-new, you'd be surprised how often a simple cleaning can remove the appearance of scratches and resolve playback issues.
Apply water and soap to a clean microfiber or cotton-based cloth, hold the disc from its outer edges, and wipe the bottom surface of your disc (i.e. the shiny side) with your cloth by rubbing outward from the disc's center ring to its edges. Do not wipe the disc in a circular motion.
Be sure to thoroughly dry the disc, as inserting a wet disc may damage your Blu-ray or DVD player - you can simply let it air dry, or wipe any moisture from the disc with a clean, dry microfiber or cotton-based cloth or tissue.

Let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns in the meantime, and please do let us know how cleaning goes. We'll be on the lookout for your reply and are happy to send you a replacement disc if needed.

I don't think the library cares. Unless the booklet is substantial and thick they wouldn't even label the disc as including a "book". In fact in the past they like to keep all the blu-rays including the Criterions in the standard blue cases and because Criterion uses their own plastic case and the booklets/leaflets would not fit the standard blue cases they would get tossed into the trash. Nowadays they keep the Criterion cases as it is so the booklets/leaflets remain in the case.

Hope Criterion release this. Otherwise Warner is just sitting on their thumbs, as we "patiently" wait for it.

On my wishlist too. I know Disney and all that hoopla but you never know. Wes Anderson gets his work on the label, why can David freakin' Lynch do the same? It's not like he's already getting damn near every film there already.

For a second, just a second, I though you meant the Keanu Reeves one. Fun little flick though.

I'd be very happy if Criterion upgraded the other two Hiroshi Teshigahara movies they released on DVD, but I have no idea if they're HD-ready.

They really gotta give us something Kurosawa. Boxset, re-release on UHD and/or blu, something new for them (which I think there's very little that would be new to them).

They also should update Rebel Samurai. Great titles in that little collection.

Seeing that almost everything from the DVD box-set are included on the Woman in the Dunes Blu-ray they probably didn't have any plans to upgrade the other two films. The same thing happened with the Louis Malle box-set in which only one of the films was upgraded and most of the DVD box-set extras carried over onto that disc.

It's getting quite ridiculous actually, and it seems to be from every company. 007 4K Collection, Dune, Last Night in Soho 4K, Touch of Evil 4k, Downton Abbey Collection, Alligator 4K. All arriving with significant scratching. I usually don't mind if they're from Amazon, because I'll just keep returning until I get a pristine copy, but these movies are not cheap and the quality control is getting worse and worse. And sometimes, I won't potentially be watching the movie in the 10-30 day window, so I don't want to risk it being unplayable after being returnable. It's downright infuriating. My 007 collection I've Recieved twice with multiple scratches discs.

Every time I mention Kurosawa in other threads I’m told they are being held hostage by the difficult to deal with Toho. I’m chomping at the bits for an Akira Kurosawa set though.
