Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is coming.

All of this was compounded by the studio’s mutilation of the film on its release; the creation years later of a much longer version, based on Roger Spottiswoode’s cutting copy; and later still a shorter but intelligible version based on the long cut. Criterion are releasing the film on Blu-ray this year, and will presumably pick a favourite.

I'm very excited by this (if true). I don't know about this though:

Criterion are releasing the film on Blu-ray this year, and will presumably pick a favourite.

Criterion better not "pick a favourite". If they release this, they need to do it right and include all three cuts.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like Criterion really does the multiple cut thing often...

Is that perhaps more to do with living directors (eg., Coens, WKW) not allowing multiple cuts in favour of only their "new" creations?

It's more of Criterion releasing titles that don't have multiple versions out there. Even in the case of the WKW set, it's clear that Criterion are ok with adding alternative versions as they added the alternative cut of Days of Being Wild, a title that isn't owned by WKW.

A Criterion+ Warner collaboration usually produces better results, so let's hope for the best. Warner did release both the preview version and the special edition of the film on DVD, so I think chances are good. Including all three versions would be best, for sure, but I wouldn't mind too much if we have to lose the 106-minute theatrical cut in this case.

They did multiple versions for both The Tree of Life and The New World, probably others.

I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that they could do it for Pat Garrett.

There's also multi-cut releases for Brazil, Parasite, Godzilla, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Night of the Living Dead, Carnival of Souls (only on DVD though), and if it counts, Koyaanisqatsi includes its demo cut. I think some of the Bergman films might have also had different cuts. It's not common when looking at the entirety of the collection, but some of these are big releases.
