For titles with rights problems Criterion should tackle I vote for Christmas Holiday. I like Deanna Durbin and film noir directed by Robert Siodmak. Nobody is saying what the rights problem is, but since everybody involved is long dead I assume somebody's great-grandchildren are being jerks.

Little Children is one of those un-upgradeable DVDs in my collection.

I would celebrate its Blu-ray release by anyone for entirely selfish reasons.

For a second I thought someone had taken a photo of the media department at a local library. Your name, TheHistorian, is a perfect fit for your collection, and if you ever needed a Criterion soul brother, his name would be TheLibrarian.

Kind of doubt it. I enjoyed it and respect its BP win, but it doesn't really push the boundaries of filmmaking or storytelling (other than its incredible ensemble of Deaf actors). Besides Drive My Car, the only BP nominee I see being inducted into the Collection is The Power of the Dog.

I'm sure they'd love to release it, I think it's more dependent on whether Apple is willing to play ball. This is the biggest draw they have to their streaming service right now, so they might want to keep it exclusive for some time. We've seen Apple license their originals like Wolfwalkers before (though with limitations in that case), so they don't seem against licensing to labels,.

Thanks for all the replies. I ask because I don't see subscribing just for this film and feel like I may never get to see it unless they do decide to license it out.

There's no need to subscribe, they offer a free 7 day trial. That's how I was able to watch it (twice actually).

I saw Samurai Rebellion at my local indie theater, and became an instant fan. My Eureka copy of Kwaidan is sitting on a shelf, roughly three feet from me!

Criterion aren't the only ones I've seen with disc issues, but it definitely seems to be more prevalent with them.

All we can do is keep letting Criterion know about this until they realize that there is an issue here, and things need to change. Although, there's probably little incentive for them to do so until it starts costsing them more money (lost sales, replacement discs, etc..)
Well the QC being addressed here has only been an issue since late 2019 I think, but I'd presume the discs have always been placed in the case by hand. At least late 2019 is when I first noticed the issue on my discs. I've encountered it with a Kino disc here or there, as well.

I imagine most boutique labels do that by hand, I guess I just thought Criterion was bigger than that.

I have 95-ish Criterions, I've absolutely never had any of them come scratched, smudged, or otherwise imperfect

I never know what the purpose of comments like this are.

You are either calling us liars, or you are humblebragging about an unbelievably obnoxious amount of luck.

I have a huge scratch on the Great Escape. I was nearly positive it wouldn't work, but it did. Since then I've had a few other Criterion releases with a scratches, but all have worked. Same with Scream Factory. Ton of scratches, but all work.

Then there are other releases from other companies which have the tiniest of scratches and they skip, cause my player to freeze, etc.

I'd recommend you work on not being so sensitive. I meant nothing more than to simply share the data and perspective that I have. What you said was surprising to me, and I shared my experience. Nothing in what I said was a slight against you, least of all to call you a liar. I'm sorry that your feelings were hurt so easily, but that has nothing to do with me.
