To each their own. The only DVD boxes I have are the Antoine Doinel set and the Teshigahara box, both of which I'll take over the Godzilla set which I find to be obnoxiously tall. My personal preference is for boxes that are the same relative size/shape as a normal case. However, in the case of a Kurosawa box, I'll take whatever they give me.

Gotta love that "I know nothing about Summertime, but sure as hell I'm gonna go down in a blaze of ignorance" trolling.

Last year, there was a Criterion Flash sale at the end of May. I remember because it came up right after Vinegar Syndrome's Halfway sale. There was another sale in July.

Yes, they had a 30% off sale last May.

Are you sure you're not confusing it with Barnes & Noble's twice annual Criterion sales?

Yes, I guess the July sale was with Barnes & Noble. I thought Criterion offers the sale at the same time. Canada isn't allowed to order Criterion from Barnes & Noble. We need to order though Unobstructed View.

Agreed. Whatever packaging they give me I'll be happy with. I just want a Kurosawa box that bad.

Is a Kurosawa box a reasonable expectation? Maybe I should stop buying individual titles in case they're included with the box.

I do hope Criterion starts focusing a bit more on some upgrades. I'm still surprised that Le Deuxième Souffle doesn't have a Blu-ray yet. We get releases of Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge before we got his.

Also really need Samurai Rebellion, Fires On the Plains, and Under the Volcano at some point.

No, they're separate 50% off sales. Also, Criterion's own are 24-hour "flash" sales while B&N are usually a month long.

They did the DVD box set. The recent Blu-ray box sets have apparently done quite well for them.

It's a reasonable assumption. There's just no news, and when combined with the fact that they haven't put out a single Kurosawa release in a few years, it feels like something is up.

That's all we have. And we cling to it like our lives depend on it.

The fact that we haven't had a Kurosawa release in YEARS seems very odd, which is why I do believe some sort of boxset is in the works. How many titles it will include is anyone's guess, but not a single Kurosawa release in 5 years seems rather strange from a company that would slowly release a ton of his works.

Has Japan released blu rays of Kurosawas more contemporary work yet? (like the Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog etc)? I could see that being one of the hurdles. Toho has some incredibly stupid policies.

They have. Stray Dog, Bad Sleep Well, Dodesukaden, I Live In Fear, Madadayo, The Quiet Duel, Drunken Angel, and about and 6 of his earlier works have Blu-rays in Japan.

July is going to be an expensive month for collecting, Criterion alone. Possibly Arrow has Shawscope Vol. 2 coming too.

Based on James Flower's comment, I would say it's probably not happening in July. Probably August/September.
