In the movie Dog Day Afternoon, the bank manager Mulvaney is played by Sully Boyar. I don't believe his first name is said in the movie but the script refers to him as Patrick Mulvaney. Patrick is not a first name you give when making up a name. You typically go with John/Jon or Joe. So "Jon Mulvaney" was the name selected to represent Criterion in customer service dealings.

Every so often people say "Jon Mulvaney" does not exist because there are no pictures of him online. It's often said his name is simply a standin for any given customer service agent. I think it's quite clear "Jon Mulvaney" is not a human being. Mr. Mulvaney is a dog.
That's some dogged reporting!

Film Forum has posted their August/September calendar (PDF). The most relevant part as far as Janus/Criterion goes is the screening of the new 4K restoration of The 400 Blows. The further adventures of Antoine Doinel will also be screened, not sure if Criterion got those back.

They will also be having a huge retrospective of Miloš Forman in honor of his 90th birthday, including the film Amadeus, which Criterion is suspected of having. There's also a retrospective on Alain Resnais, including Hiroshima Mon Amour, Muriel, or The Time of Return, Night and Fog, and others. Mike Nichols' Carnal Knowledge (1971) will also be screened, from a new 4K restoration.

With the Euro being 1:1 right now I am debating just picking up the 4K boxsets of Doinel and Three Colors from Amazon France.

Even with the TCM version, which seems to be the best one around, the film is sorely in need of restoration. One can only hope...
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the 3 biggest American western omissions on HD (excluding ones screaming for improvements like The Searchers and The Wild Bunch) are Winchester '73, The Big Sky and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid...and all 3 are heavily rumored to be with Criterion.

I wish they or whoever has them would correct these grievous oversights by now.

I am looking at all of the upcoming 4K UHD announcements for the months to come, and I am having an epiphany.

I will not be able to finance buying all of the forthcoming 4K UHD upgrades to replace existing Blu-rays that I own, nor should I try.

As soon as payday hits, though, I am going to venture to a brick-and-mortar Barnes & Noble to look for Double Indemnity 4K and Shaft 4K. Those, in particular, are priorities.

There are also a lot of glowing reviews in the dedicated thread in the 4K section.

Are we sure Dog Day Afternoon isn’t just a pun based on having dogs in the office?

I am almost certain that was a joke by that member and has nothing to do with Criterion at all.

If tomorrow is when we get the new reveals, it will be an interesting one as there are a few expected titles that probably won't all get dates. Cure? Night of the Living Dead 4K? Lost Highway? Really curious about this line up.

Tomorrow's prediction: Some people will be happy. Some people will complain.

Edit: Apparently, this is has become my Monday prediction.

Criterion No to Miller's Crossing and The Tales of Hoffman...for now.

Normally during a 50% off sale, i would have purchased two additional films: Miller's Crossing and The Tales of Hoffman. However, I feel that both of these films are "prime candidates" to upgrade to 4K. I am willing to give Criterion two years to make this upgrade, just like I am currently doing with the Three Films by Luis Buñuel collection (to be clear, I am not anticipating a 4K upgrade with Buñuel, but rather a "body of work" set, much like the Bergman and Fellini sets.)

Ironically, I decided to purchase the Once Upon a Time in China set. While i would have loved to purchase this set in 4K, I speculate that it will not be upgraded to 4K anytime soon.

These are the decisions that a physical-media film curator must make these days. Our numbers are dwindling, my friends, but my passion for hard-copy intensifies. What's next? 8K? 16K? 32K? The bottom line is that I would like to continue making my lifetime's remaining purchases on the best format available, and currently that is 4K.
