Yes! Give us some beautifully restored Eric Von Stroheim!

BTW, I want to see Greed which is in the public domain in it's theatrical form and the reconstructed version can be rented. I want to see the theatrical cut, but all the public domain posts lack music to accompany it. Do you know any good music I can sync to it?

Srsly?!
That's almost one movie a day, do you happen to work in a cinema?
And that's 270 different movies or are there re-watches?

I generally have the same number - I live opposite a cinema, and in the UK there are theatres that have a yearly/monthly subscription and you can watch as much as you want - the challenge is sometimes there's not enough options to watch one new film a day.

My mistake. I actually meant this as a statement. Don't mind the question mark at the end. But yes, it is only in a boxset.

Part of it is also about taking risks, so watching films even if they don’t have many reviews or are a bit mixed, or watching the Indian/Polish/HK films which get UK releases but never seem to attract an audience or reviews outside the diaspora. And also by realising that rewatches can be a completely different experience to watching it before or at home.

Are we getting announcements today or, since it's MLK day, are they coming tomorrow?

270 different movies + 3 re-watches. Re-watches are pretty rare. Don't work at a theater but there's about 20 theaters within a 15 miles radius of my house so I have lots of options, with a lot of variety in new releases every week

Festivals definitely help boost my numbers! I went to 5 in 2022, for a total of of 53 movies in only those 23 days of festivals.

That is impressive. When lived in NYC I was probably going a few times a day, everyday, but that’s because of all the repertory houses. Otherwise I find going to the multiplexes pure torture. After endless commercials, some trailers, more commercials!, and trailers again, I’m ready to walk out or hang myself.

I have the AMC subscriber thing and I can’t remember the last time I went alone and didn’t walk in 15 minutes past the posted start time, maybe even 20, for that exact reason.

I like festivals when I can go, but it can also make it easy to burn out if you’re there from morning to night for a week.

I logged 214 movies last year on my Letterboxd, but only 118 features I had not seen previously. 73 were re-watches, and the rest were short films, like cartoons. I stream most of my movies. Yes, it may sound like blasphemy to some here, but streaming is great if your more a movie fan than a collector and you just want to be able to see stuff and not spend a shit ton of money, it's just more cost effective and yes, streaming video quality is usually fantastic. The Criterion Channel and Kanopy are incredible.

I don't watch much television.

I love showing favorites to friends who I think might love them, this past year, I showed my friends Son of the White Mare (1981), Woman in the Dunes, Bride of Frankenstein, Mildred Pierce (1945), Close-Up (1990), The Red Shoes (1948), Dr, Strangelove, Ugetsu, and Devi (1960).

I live in suburban Florida, there are no repertory or art house theaters out here just ultra commercial multiplex trash.

The last movie I saw in theaters was The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Tampa Theater last fall. Which marked my first ever visit to an actual art house theater and my first visit to a movie theater in general in years.

Fisher King is probably my least favorite Gilliam. I’ve been warming up to it though.

I hope you all don't mind me saying this but, I hate Svet Atanosov and think he shouldn't be allowed to review Criterion releases anymore since he's lately given a ton of releases low scores, especially because he doesn't think their color grading or "color temperature" are correct or what ever ridiculous reason.

And in general, I'm really annoyed by all the people on this site who love to bash Criterion, like those who complain "all Criterion releases use DNR" (as if that is a fact and even if it is because even a little is bad?) or "I hate their codec" (though literally all Blu-ray releases use the same codec) or "I hate this color grade from L'Immagine Ritrovata, they're destroying cinema" (because a bunch of videophiles who don't regularly work with film totally know how a movie like Manila in the Claws of Light or Touki Bouki is supposed look).

There's no appreciation for the work of film restoration and those distributing these films and instead is nothing but bile and disdain expressed under the guise of being "concerned consumers wanting a good product."

I preparing for a new wave of this in the comments of the April releases post. In some previous cases, the bile got so bad from users complaining about "Criterion going woke" for instance, they had to turn off the comments for the post.

Sorry, I came off the "Criterion releases with DNR" thread and I just can't stand the idea that so many stunning releases I have by them would supposedly use DNR and look "wrong" instead of beautiful.

In 2022, I went to a movie theater 1 time.

In 2021, I'd estimate about 50 times (about once a week on average).

The reason why I only saw 1 movie in 2022 (in theaters) is I was about 45 min. from the closest movie theater (driving-wise), plus I was in a third world country where driving on the roads could have meant my life. I think I have a good excuse! And oh, the 1 movie I saw in 2022 was The Fabelmans (and it was in the last week of December when I arrived back in the USA on the 18th.

On the other hand, in 2022, I watched close to 300 films (all on my home laser projector!).

Film criticism and reviews, in this case of a physical product, can be a very personal thing. Svet's reviews don't bother me at all yet I find Randy Miller III's reviews always wrong, especially in his takes on the films themselves. What that teaches me is to not hate RMIII but to avoid his film reviews because we are obviously not in tune with each other.

I've been watching old Siskel and Ebert shows on YouTube and I love how they did their reviewing. Whether I agreed with them, or just one of them, or not they explained their positions on a film very well, so at least you could respect their views on it. Although in their worst films of the year shows they could come off as anal at times, although very funny.

As for DNR and other things, after about five minutes of watching a blu-ray I'm involved in the film and wouldn't even notice EE, bad sound or anything but watching the moving images. Laurel and Hardy look a bit waxy in The Music Box? Yep, but I'm laughing now so I'm paying attention to that and nothing else. Oops, there goes the piano again...
