Hi everyone
I've been going through Criterion's catalog the last couple of days and I saw that a lot of Blu-Rays are based on new 4k restorations. Does that mean all of these will eventually be available on 4k UHD discs at some point? Or is that more expensive & complicated (license?) for them as I imagine and it might take years, if ever released?

Is there any information on that around?

There are many movies available right now I'm tempted to buy but I'd rather be patient and wait for true 4k releases but on the other hand I don't want to wait forever...

If you’re adventurous start with SALO. If you want something less traumatic go with TEOREMA, PIGSTY, or ARABIAN NIGHTS.

If I remember correctly from when I watched this one, the story was a bit dark and sad. Kind of surprising to see a whole movie as a special feature, but giving more people a chance to view it can't be a bad thing

We don’t know what will happen with 4K releases. A good example of this is the announcement a few months ago by Criterion about a Branded to Kill 4K that was very unexpected by nearly everyone. There are also studio restraints such as a film needing to be first released in the native country, such as Japan, before it is allowed to be released elsewhere.

There are also issues dealing with distributors here who may not see certain titles worth the investment, such as licensing, of a 4K release.

It seems to me, Criterion have recently been releasing both 4K and blu of the same title on the same month. They have gone back and re-released a very popular title on 4K years after the original blu, but they usually only do that for the big names like Dazed and Confused, Mildred Pierce, The Seventh Seal, etc.

Salo is utter garbage. Sickening, loathsome and worthless. It isn't art because you stick a camera in front of nude children eating feces. I'd burn the negatives if given the chance. Ignore the people defending it, there is no good reason a human being should sit through it.

No idea how we're going from Salo to the greatest story ever, but watch The Gospel According to St. Matthew, it's a masterpiece.

It's hard to know where to start with Pasolini (I don't consider him a particularly accessible filmmaker), but I really wouldn't recommend starting with Salo. Accattone and Gospel According to St. Matthew would probably be good starting points, and they're both on the Channel. Teorama - also on the Channel - would be a good follow-up. The "Trilogy of Life" films are interesting, but I also wouldn't recommend starting with them.

An extra?? I'm more and more convinced that Criterion has no respect for animation, they must consider it as a minor subgenre. Apart from Fantastic Mr Fox and Wall-E I can't remember them releasing any animated film in recent history. And now that they have the rights to another one, they just make it an extra? Of course it's better than nothing but honestly, it's a terrific movie, it would deserve its own release.

I started with Salo and "loved" it. Then went on with Comizi d'amore and Theorem. I don't think that any of his films is specifically a good starting point. Just start with any of them, the important thing is making sure that you're ready to go all the way, because whatever film you choose to watch, you know you're in for a cinematic experience like no other.

I would recommend Pasolini films chronologically, although I agree that there really is no good starting point. Salo is probably not a safe starting point and I think it takes time to appreciate Salo if one isn't well affiliated with Pasolini's works (Although it's a known fact that Salo isn't for everyone so it may not click and that's alright). Nonetheless, a very interesting director worth checking out that has a lot of great works and is not just Salo.

Ha, I started with Salo too! I loved it and loved the rest of his filmography!
