I don't think so--I'm pretty sure this was always the plan. Scorsese was pretty dissatisfied by the lack of a wide release for Irishman if I recall correctly. I remember seeing an article where he was actively talking with AMC and Regal but they wouldn't budge, so the day-and-date and/or ignoring of the theatrical window thing (back then 90 days) was something I would say he was certainly NOT interested in doing again. For Flower Moon I do not remember it even being a day-and-date with Apple TV.

Flower Moon was always planned with a wide release window, as it was set up at Paramount before they disagreed on the budget and brought in Apple TV+ to finance it and have a different release model. Napoleon only had Sony and Argylle only had Universal brought in as theatrical distributors more recently, after the awards success (but small theatrical release) of CODA. However, some of Apple’s recent theatrical releases like Still: A Michael J. Fox Story, Flora & Son, The Pigeon Tunnel, Fingerprints are still pretty limited, focusing on indies/arthouses and smaller chains like Showcase and Picturehouse, but not showing in the bigger chains. Netflix have also been adjusting to monthlong windows on some films like Bardo, Glass Onion, Pinocchio, White Noise, Maestro (The Irishman had 3 weeks), and Amazon Studios giving longer windows to films like Air, Foe, Saltburn and playing in chains. Shudder has also been expanding theatrical, with Vertigo Releasing representing those releases in the UK, and Sky Cinema using distributors like StudioCanal and Black Bear for theatrical instead of relying on Altitude (who also represent Netflix in the UK.)

Outside of his documentaries, I would hate the idea of a Scorsese film going direct to streaming.

I think Apple's really watching both Flower Moon and Napoleon, because they're really bucking the trend with not only a wide release strategy with Paramount, but doubling down with exclusive IMAX engagements. No other streamer is even willing to dip their toe into traditional wide releases.

This is from the Criterion website:

"Berlin Alexanderplatz was shot at a speed of 25 frames per second. Due to technical discrepancies between PAL and NTSC standards, the film is presented on the DVD edition at a slightly slower speed. On the Blu-ray edition, however, it was possible to present the film at its original speed. This accounts for the difference in run time between the two editions."

My mistake. I knew the DVD was at 24p. Didn't realize they corrected it for the Blu.

My order of La Bamba and The Princess Bride 4K were just dropped off by DHL. Insane how fast they get their orders out to you, this bad boy shipped yesterday afternoon!

Thankfully no damage to the packaging and all discs are mint. Feel like I hit the jackpot lol.

Have there been any rumors of Criterion having rights to Sling Blade or Strike! (a.k.a. All I Wanna Do)?

The reason I ask is because similar to The Others, Lionsgate and Miramax had rights to these films (physically and digitally).

Don't think so. The Others is being licensed from Studiocanal.

Watched the first set. Worked great. I'm going to return the spare this weekend.

Was sad they didn't wait to include The Others. I had planned on that. Used my $50 from the first purchase to get The Piano and Mulholland Drive 4Ks.

Here’s hoping that Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project Volume 2 is going to be good! My order from Criterion hasn’t shipped yet, but I chose the UPS ground option for shipping.

Great set - Taipei Story, Limite, and Insiang are the highlights while Law of the Border, Revenge, and Mysterious Object at Noon are very good too. Just be prepared for Law of the Border looking and sounding quite rough as the only surviving materials were a poorly made print and 1" video master.

Most shocking thing to me was that Mysterious Object at Noon is a 2000 film and manages to have no surviving original elements - just a 35mm blow-up with burned-in subtitles. Terrifies me to think a film so new was almost lost.

So glad I did too. Best £20 odd quid I ever spent on physical media. Also bought a standard set as back up for £10 in an Arrow sale. Nearly two decades of searching out Kieślowski wherever I could find any and now it's low hanging fruit. Kieślowski, we can say, is relatively well served. Now if only some bright spark can assemble a massive English friendly set of my favourite filmmaker Bertrand Blier.

To those that might be interested.

Please note, the Criterion edition of TIE ME UP! TIE ME DOWN! was previously available as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo. Since this version is no longer in print, the Blu-ray disc is currently in the process of being converted into a standalone release.

While I do not have a precise ETA for the Blu-ray's return to Criterion.com, you are welcome to follow up with us for an update later this year / early next year.

After seeing it yesterday I hope they have an agreement to release Killers of the Flower Moon in about a year like they did with The Irishman

Killers of the Flower Moon isn't a Netflix film but I hope Apple allows Criterion to license it as well.

Received my flash sale order today and one of my purchases was completely unwrapped. There were parts of the original cellophane still sticking to the Scanavo case, so it had been wrapped at one point. I assume it was a return. Kinda weird how they didn't bother to re-wrap it. They even stuck one of the blue stickers right on the case. Easily removed that. Took a look at the disc, as I assume that's why it was returned. Just the faintest hint of a surface scratch on it. My OPPO seems to give zero f**ks about scratches, however, and I am sure it will play fine. I keep thinking about that sticker stuck right to the Scanavo and it makes me chuckle a little bit. Bizarre. This happened to anyone else before?
