If you look at the entire chart for Playtime and Kagemusha on DVD Beaver, both have spikes in the mid-to-high 30s.

I guess what I am shocked by is that Playtime and Kagemusha have been given very low bot rates per second in the encoding.... very low compared to their running times and bit rates per second on all other titles.
I guess I wonder why you're concerned about numbers when both reviews praise the image quality and make no mention of compression artifacts. Average bit rates are not a valid indication of image quality and are entirely dependent on the visual content of each film, so comparing the numbers to other titles is problematic. I would rather Criterion use the minimum bit rate needed to give the best picture quality on each title and not waste bits just to give people a high-number warm fuzzy.

I guess I am concerned since I would rather have the maximum usage on the discs. These are Criterion releases after all, not WB's.

and again I have to stress these are BDs not DVDs, and I realize you don't need to max out the disc etc to get the best images... but it is odd that there is this sudden drop in the films overall storage capacity.

Should we as consumers be concerned? Or do we not care about what we get for the price we pay?

I also have all of the announced ones pre-ordered...... but fortunately I've watched every one that I have at least once, with the exception of "Repulsion" which showed up on my doorstep about 30 minutes before taking that photo today

Wow Zedd...... 25 from that sale???? That's a heck of a score for Criterion titles!
Yeah, 25. My credit card thanks me, my wallet and bank account are currently not speaking to me.
I used that coupon for 20% off so many times B&N finally cut me off! HAHA!
Sadly I'm still at work...pretty sure I never leave.

Might watch Replusion tonight, or Life of Brian on DVD, talk about two different ends of the collection.

I've been super busy..... so I'm going out tonight, and plan on staying up as long as it takes, to get a viewing of "Repulsion" in tonight before I go to bed.......

Yeah, I think I'll be pushing about 80 total (not counting the doubles I have in DVD and Blu). I'm hoping to one day post all that I bought.

I'm trying not to order anything else, but for some reason "The Vanishing" is sticking out in my mind to buy. As well as Hemmingway's "The Killers". I don't know why, they're just calling out to me. I probably should buy one of the box sets if anything, like Lawrence Olvier (sp? man, I know that's wrong) Ahhh, thinking too much, must resist urge to buy more....

Yeah, I'm planning on going to a party too, but after 11 hours at work, and having to get up early to come back tomorrow, I'm not so sure...

"Repulsion" is tempting though...

I had the same thought. I have to order l'avventura on their website because the copy I got is damaged (gonna return it in store, not sure what I'm getting yet)... other than that I am going to yet again see if anything catched my eye but I'm thinking it would be smartest to grab a box set or two.

I don't think we should be concerned, unless there is a noticeable, practical difference in image quality. The bitrate number on its own is simply not very important. That's all I'm saying.

Watched Rashomon on DVD and Repulsion on blu-ray. They're both damn fine looking discs - but watching Repulsion right after, really made me want Rashomon on blu-ray.

The only Criterion I have on Blu is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. But I have rented a few others through my online Blockbuster: The Man Who Fell to Earth (Not really something I liked.), The Third Man (I enjoyed it very much.), and El Norte (Has to be my favorite movie I've seen from Criterion so far.).

I'm getting more and more interested in the Criterion Collection Blus. Are there any others that you would recommend me seeing? I've already seen The Last Emperor, but not on Blu. Are there any actually worth buying? So I can take advantage of the $19.99 offer.

Going by the two you've liked, so far, I'd probably recommend The Wages of Fear and The Seventh Seal.

Just bought a B&N's Membership savings card,I thought you get a coupon book when you join that has $5.00 off DVD and CD coupons, etc.i didnt receieve that when i payed my 25 bones, oh well, i;m sure you can't use the DVD coupon on a blu anyway! Was able to find "For All Minkind",the only blu they they had on the shelf,WTF!!! and get it for 18.00 + tax. This club IS NOT that great of a deal IMO,will be cancelling and getting my 25 bucks back before he 30 days are up! Really wanted Bottle Rocket,Fear and Loathing and the single disc of Brazil, they had NONE of these in stock in my store today, their Criterion selection was VERY SLIM!!! One of the ones I wanted, the Olivier's Shakespeare set had "floaters" in the box,GRRR!

You know the membership works online too?
You get free express shipping on orders over $25.
Coupon codes are out there, just Google " Barnes and Noble Coupons" you'll get a big list.
I'm not sure if you get a refund if you choose not to be a member.

Oh, and don't forget to split up your order for maximum coupon abuse.
Example: You're buying 4 DVDs at $15 each. You have a code for 20% off. You should send 2 orders each with 2 DVDs, so you net free shipping and you'll probably be able to use the coupon twice.
TA-DAAA!

Behold the EXAMPLE in all it's glory!

I know there's no 20% off right now, there is a 10% floating around though.
