How does the 4K of Videodrome's picture compare to the blu ray release? I have the blu ray and never opened it yet because I was not sure if I was going to buy the 4K version. Is there much of a difference between the two?

That was a different sale. The love-themed sale ran for a few days around Valentine's day and was for 30% off selected items. The regular 24-hour flash sale was March 21 and covered all in-stock items just as usual.

As someone noted, it used to always be late February but the past two years it has not been until March (3/8/22 and 3/21/23).

As long as it includes the new Rohmer release I'll be happy... and/or allows time for us to find out if there'll be a UK version.

No, they haven't. But I believe there are element issues and they probably are trying to find the best materials for a restoration. A shame too because Kino would have jumped on it long ago.

It did get a restoration from UCLA Film and TV Archive and The Film Foundation in 2017.

Then I stand corrected. I have no idea why Criterion hasn't released it, as they clearly still have the rights (DVD still in print).

Yeah, it's really impossible to figure out Criterion's roadmap. I mean, we're still just getting releases of titles like The Roaring Twenties, which they almost certainly acquired from Warner in 2017 or earlier.

What I find kind of amazing/surprising about the way they do business is, they seem to have hundreds of titles under license that don't get disc releases, or take years. Kino typically releases most titles they license within a year of acquiring them (unless of course there are restoration issues, or other curveballs)—I'd bet Shout and Arrow work similarly. But Criterion seem to sit on titles for ages, or indefinitely (Long Voyage Home, for example, has been theirs for well over a decade as it first appeared with their logo when they had a deal with Hulu; same goes for Plough and the Stars, just to name another... let alone all the Japanese titles). How do they continue to profit while they pay for these licenses and not see any return? Do they just sell so many copies of what they do release that it all works out for them?

You should assume that you’ll never have any idea and that it will be a while. All part of the business model that you should never question or be met with a disquisition from a new member.

Perhaps they’re forced to sign the gigantic deals too, and then they just don’t do the 90% of titles they didn’t want.

Disney Business Model: “You’ll own nothing and like it.”

Criterion Business Model: “You’ll request the titles we’ve had for ten years, we’ll release whatever the hell we want, and you’ll like it.”

Warner Business Model: Hey, remember DivX? You may think you own it, but when you go to play it in ten years...
