Most of these titles are parts of larger deals. Also the Janus Films titles, they usually have theatrical, streaming, television, and digital rights, so a disc isn't the only way to monetize a title.

That was also Judge Smails business model on Caddyshack.

That was my attempt at snark.

DivX was all about paying a nominal fee for a short window to watch it, then needing to cough up more money later if you wanted to watch this disc you "purchased" again in the future.
Warner has a long history of layer failures with their discs, going back to the laserdisc era.
So, you are paying more money (than a DivX disc initially cost), for a disc that you will be able to play immediately and for a few years thereafter, but that you won't be able to count on many years down the road- long after you would be able to take it back as defective.
If you want to watch that movie on disc again, and the disc has corrupted, you'll have to cough up whatever the new purchase price is.

That's essentially the DivX business model done one better because the customer would be paying a retail price each time.

BLACK ROBE is an amazing film that is relatively forgotten now. I think it got thrown away on a Blu somewhere or maybe is just languishing on DVD still. I saw it as the anti-DANCES WITH WOLVES without a single cuddly Native American/Canadian in sight. The violent realism of it was breathtaking and it should have gotten more critical recognition than it did or does.

And a lot of people DO like that Criterion business model and patronize it without hesitation.

Kino typically releases most titles they license within a year of acquiring them (unless of course there are restoration issues, or other curveballs)—I'd bet Shout and Arrow work similarly. But Criterion seem to sit on titles for ages, or indefinitely (Long Voyage Home, for example, has been theirs for well over a decade as it first appeared with their logo when they had a deal with Hulu; same goes for Plough and the Stars, just to name another... let alone all the Japanese titles). How do they continue to profit while they pay for these licenses and not see any return? Do they just sell so many copies of what they do release that it all works out for them?
Yeah, that is the million dollar question. I believe they are holding on to at least 10 of some of my most wanted titles (not even counting the upgrades of their Dvds I want), including Long Voyage Home which I just acquired from Imprint. I am hoping the Criterion has a newer/better transfer and different extras.

That's a positive.

Other than Fanny and Alexander (TV version, first episode), I can't think of another movie in the collection that has a flatulence joke.

It got a legit release in Spain from Universal. So, I would think the elements are up to par. We know Criterion is bad for sitting on the films they have.

EDIT: NM I saw MifuneFan post about the restoration. Though, the madness in which Criterion decides to release titles is still confusing.

Has anyone heard or does anyone think Criterion may have THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE planned for 4K or will it be a WB release like CASABLANCA and FALCON?

They had great extras on Film Struck, not just talking heads, animations explaining what Tolland did with the cinematography. I haven't seen it on Criterion Channel

That is good news! I am hoping since Imprint released it, that will motivate Criterion to get off the pot and put the damn thing out...

My main wish is for a 4K of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was one of the first Criterions that I bought on LD.

I have a feeling Sony may release it. Aren’t we near a 50th anniversary?
