I've been watching Harold Lloyd shorts lately on the Channel, I could go for another film in their Lloyd collection. It's been a spell!

Janus Films has provided an official domestic trailer for the new 4K restoration of Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï (1967), starring Alain Delon, François Périer, Nathalie Delon, Cathy Rosier, and Jacques Leroy. The new 4K restoration will have its premiere at Film Forum in New York City on March 29. It will open nationally on April 5.

Also included with this announcement is an official theatrical poster.

In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays Jef Costello, a contract killer with samurai instincts. After carrying out a flawlessly planned hit, Jef finds himself caught between a persistent police investigator and a ruthless employer, and not even his armor of fedora and trench coat can protect him. An elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool by maverick director Jean‑Pierre Melville, Le samouraï is a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture—with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology.

Restored in 4K by Pathé and The Criterion Collection at L'Immagine Ritrovata, from the original 35mm negative. Presented with support from the George Fasel Memorial Fund for Classic French Cinema.

Admittedly the Blu-ray is woefully inaccurate. It claims to have been struck from a new master, but I have trouble believing that. It seems like the correct colors are somewhere in between. Nonetheless, I'm still buying the 4K.

Are you talking about the existing Criterion bluray? It is based on the same master they used for their DVD.

Captain Blood is another one I've wondered why it hasn't happened. It's popular, people love it, and yet it's still trapped on DVD. I initially assumed there were elements issues based on my own awful copies of the tape (in short, my 1983 tape of the 100-minute rerelease version is strong, but my 1991 VHS of the 120-minute original version looks awful), but someone else verified that a new 4K transfer is out there, presumably taken from a pristine fine grain. So the transfer's done, but we have no clue who's doing the disc or when. While Kino's "we're working on it" announcements can be maddening when the disc never shows, at least we know where a title is and we know the ball is rolling. With Criterion, you literally only know a title's coming on announcement day or when something leaks, and in the latter case, you're left waiting years for titles. Some we get (After Hours, Freaks), some we don't (Burn!, Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid, Risky Business, Captain Blood, The Seventh Victim, I Walked With A Zombie).

My theory is that Captain Blood was supposed to come out last year from Criterion, since the 4k master is already finished and George Feltenstein was teasing it for 2023. But, after the missing scenes from The Unknown were found, they decided to finally go ahead with Freaks, make it a boxset, and moved all their resources over to getting that project out by Halloween

If that's true maybe we'll get Captain Blood this year. Although right now if Criterion releases anything Classic Hollywood, it'll be something that already has a BD release.

Complete shot in the dark, but maybe Dark Victory since it's OOP for seemingly no reason.

What’s your thoughts on Criterion possibly acquiring John Paisz’s Canadian underrated surrealist comedy film Crimewave? It’s never been released on Blu-Ray, or heck DVD for that matter only VHS. I would love to see Criterion announce it on Blu-Ray it would be huge news.

Also do you think Criterion could release, or in one case re-release Rage in Harlem, and Baby Boy on Blu-Ray?

I’m honestly surprised Criterion hasn’t re-released Rage in Harlem on Blu-Ray yet considering they have a number of titles involving Bill Duke directing, or not on Blu-Ray. Case in point, his amazing neo-noir film Deep Cover.

I’m trying to think of ways they can accelerate and get these on disc in releases that make sense. Those three would fit nicely.

A five film talkies box set would make sense. And the remaining shorts.

The way Criterion staggers this stuff drives me up the wall. Chaplin too.

It was restored in 2017. Still several years ago, but not over a decade.

Perhaps we'll get a Chaplin big box since this year is the 110th anniversary of his film debut.

Since Flicker Alley already put out the Mutual and Essanay films, and I assume someone is going to put out the Keystones before long, they could easily fit his Estate-owned filmography within a 12-disc set.
