All are coming to 4K, but not 4K only. Funny Girl, Paper Moon, and Scarface are all getting separate Blu-ray releases as well. November is not a normal month for Criterion. Since they started doing 4K releases, they've statistically released more 4K's in this month (and July, their other B&N sale month) than other months, so nothing can be gleaned from that.

I know this has been asked but a lot of these aren't HDR so why pick them up if the BD will be sufficient, cheaper, and with the same extras? Clarity you won't actually get to notice that much of?

Because in the case of the Toho films, the Blu-rays are from older scans and restorations, which the 4K releases should blow out the water, regardless of HDR or not.

Oh, my aching wallet! I'm getting all of them. Funny Girl, Paper Moon and Seven Samurai will be DVD upgrades and I only have The Shape of Water on digital. Buying Godzilla will be contingent on the 4K being a genuine restoration by Toho. To be honest, I'd have preferred a 4k release of Godzilla Minus Zero. which I think is even better than the original.

What an amazing month!

It’s not just clarity. It’s grain, it’s motion fluidity, it’s far better compression. You don’t even need a bigger screen to appreciate these qualities. (I don’t think the difference is so dramatic from an already clean digital source, but if there’s one thing 4k with a healthy bit-rate does well, it’s capturing the film feel of it all.)

That’s a fair point and I wasn’t aware of the 4k. I personally would’ve preferred Nightmare Alley, but they may feel that their relationship with Del Toro - and the opportunity to regularly put out Fox films as Bill Hunt reported today - might have made it worthwhile. I’m sure they figure having a best picture winner is a plus.

Not one of the ones I’ll pick up - and not just bc my wife hated it - but I can see some of the rationale. But if anyone wants to call this redundant, I won’t fight ‘em on it.

I should have rephrased my question: I meant to ask do you think they will do anymore exclusively Blu releases now?

Do they still release DVDs?

I genuinely wonder when they're going to stop BD only releases and shift to 4K + BD combo packs only.

Of course, but a forum is for conversation and socializing, not just going off alone and doing solitary research that can be done anytime, of course, and continues to lead all of us toward a limited, anti-social existence without any reactions or feedback or cordial human interaction.

Wow that’s not too many 27 titles is a lot less than I expected that’s pretty small compared to the DVD list. Although, some of these titles literally have no chance, but that being said I definitely see Dead Presidents re-releasing on Blu-Ray and 4K next year from Criterion. I also definitely see Adams Rib, those three Hitchcock laserdisc titles, and a number of others on here also getting upgraded too at some point.

Man, Criterion has been on fire lately! The only one I already own is Godzilla in the Showa set. Not sure I need to upgrade that, as I'm not a die hard fan... But I will definitely pick up Paper Moon, The Shape of Water, and Seven Samurai in the November sale!

I don't not know what every expects, but almost everything released this month was hinted at, and anticipated. For those indicating you have "Paper Moon" already from an import, well good for you, but us patient people waited for the anticipated Criterion release, and in 4k. If you have the Blu-ray already, well fine, but some of us are into UHD discs and welcome upgrades. Now get ready for the end of the month when Warner Archive announces a new batch, and let the complaining start all over again.
This is me I’m looking forward to literally all of these releases as I own none of them especially the Paper Moon, and Seven Samurai releases.

I think there will still be plenty of titles that either would be poor sellers on 4K, or have other technical limitations that don't make it feasible, so i think we'll still continue to see a fair share of Blu-ray only releases for years to come. If my calculations are correct, and including Janus Contemporary titles, we've seen around 26 Blu-ray only releases this year out of about 64 titles announced (excluding that CC40 set lol). So that's about 40% of their total output of titles right now.
  1. About Dry Grasses
  2. Afire
  3. All That Breathes
  4. All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
  5. All That Money Can Buy
  6. Anatomy of a Fall
  7. Black God, White Devil
  8. Brief Encounters / Long Farewell
  9. Chantal Akerman Masterpieces
  10. Dogfight
  11. Eric Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons
  12. Floating Weeds / A Story of Floating Weeds
  13. Girlfight
  14. Lynch/Oz
  15. Mudbound
  16. Not a Pretty Picture
  17. Nothing But a Man
  18. Orlando: My Political Biography
  19. Ousmane Sembène set
  20. Pandora's Box
  21. Querelle
  22. The Runner
  23. Saint Omer
  24. Totem
  25. The Underground Railroad
  26. Victims of Sin

And since I made this list too, here are their 4K titles for the year

  1. All of Us Strangers
  2. Apu Trilogy
  3. Blood Simple
  4. Blue Velvet
  5. Bound
  6. Demon Pond
  7. Doom Generation
  8. Farewell My Concubine
  9. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
  10. Funny Girl
  11. Gojira
  12. Gummo
  13. Happiness
  14. Heroic Trio / Executioners
  15. I Am Cuba
  16. I Walked with a Zombie / The Seventh Victim
  17. La Haine
  18. Le Samourai
  19. Lone Star
  20. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
  21. Mother
  22. Paper Moon
  23. Pat Garrett and Bill the Kid
  24. Peeping Tom
  25. Perfect Days
  26. Picnic at Hanging Rock
  27. Real Life
  28. Repo Man
  29. Risky Business
  30. Scarface (1932)
  31. Seven Samurai
  32. The Last Emperor
  33. The Long Good Friday
  34. The Roaring Twenties
  35. The Shape of Water
  36. To Die For
  37. Trainspotting
  38. Werckmeister Harmonies

(Bolded are Upgrades from either DVD or Blu-ray. Peeping Tom and Long Good Friday 4K's are two that went from DVD to 4K/BD. Titles released by Criterion on Laserdisc aren't counted. Also, I just eyeballed this, so I'm sure I missed something, or my counts are slightly off.)

Absolutely. If nothing else, it makes logistic sense - slots for UHD pressing are far harder to come upon than BD. If they can do a BD-only edition, it makes things easier.

AFAIK, their policy is still the same on DVDs - they will do a DVD if there’s not an existing in-print DVD on the market.

All that Money Can Buy is selling like crazy ever since it came out in February like its insane I tried looking for a copy on Amazon, and they were only selling copies from third party sellers. I cannot believe how many copies of this old 30s film have gotten sold online.

I have the Toho Japanese UHD of Godzilla, and if Criterion just uses that master it is a massive upgrade over the current Criterion blu-ray. And with English subtitles. (I can't really imagine them releasing anything inferior to that.)

Not sure why you would prefer Godzilla Minus One as Toho is releaseing multiple versions here in the States.
