There's a BFI dual format edition available in the UK, it is however, Region B locked in case you're not region free.

It really isn't. Not for a quality case, anyway.

I'm with you. I don't think giving Criterion's inherent release delays a pass simply because the technology changed in the interim justifies the practice. I'm not a fan of withholding titles from the public for any reason, let alone unknown and/or obscure reasons. I'm sure sooner or later we will see most Criterion Blus get upgraded to 4K, same as they did for Blu, so all the long waits for announcements and releases have accomplished is possibly preventing eventual double dipping, which ain't bad! Actually, that's the best, most worthy advantage of sitting on titles and getting the first release done right AS IS. So I guess I can't debate the point too much since I wish KINO had been practicing the same philosophy instead of rushing releases out too soon and now cluttering the waters with "improved" re-releases.

I never knew Criterion sold those.

Back when I bought my Viva Elite cases for standard blu ray (2015) I paid something like 30-40 cents a piece (33 cents single, 43 cents double). Even the 3 disc Viva Elites I bought were only 60 cents each and hell, I got that price buying just 25 of them. I just checked my old emails to verify this. Looking around recently I see that things have changed a whole lot and prices have gone through the sky. Just bought 50 4k blu ray double cases from a company called MediaPack4All for a buck a piece. Found out about em from someone in another thread. Woulda been a little cheaper if I had ordered 100 but I just don't see myself owning as many uhd blu rays as I do the standard ones. To me it seems that Viva Elite cases for 4k have dropped in quality by a good bit so I didn't want to go with those. I'm working with a small sample size but percentage of uhd cases showing up damaged is definitely higher than I was getting with standard blu ray despite 4k costing a significant amount more and most of the time it's Viva cases. And yeah, I'm going on and on about Viva cases but $3 for a plastic case, ANY plastic case, seems like a lot to me.

Woot woot! All Criterion 4K discs 30% off through Sept 3... including pre-orders. Just pulled the trigger on Seven Samurai (with a little help from an extra $10 off I had lyin' around).

That is funny. The actual closet is for sure at their NYC office though. Someone in the reddit comments likely has the right idea, that it's part of a CC40 promo. I would guess they're making a mobile pop-up closet that they'll tour around NYC, and perhaps other places.

Maybe Criterion could work in a trip to Michigan to meet Criterion enthusiasts and to take advantage of the 10 cent bottle deposit.

Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus

Janus Contemporaries Blu-ray | Release Date: November 19th

https://www.criterion.com/films/3410...-sakamoto-opus

Quote:
A celebration of an artist’s life in the purest sense, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus is the swan song of one of the world’s greatest musicians. As a parting gift, just months before his death in 2023, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave us with one final performance: a concert film featuring just him and a piano, directed by his son, Neo Sora. Curated and sequenced by Sakamoto himself, the twenty of his pieces played in the film wordlessly tell the story of his life and his wide-ranging oeuvre. The selection spans his entire career, from his pop-star period with Yellow Magic Orchestra and his magnificent scores for filmmakers Bernardo Bertolucci and Nagisa Oshima to his meditative final album, 12. Captured in intimate black and white, and surrounded by trusted collaborators, Sakamoto bares his soul through his exquisitely haunting melodies, knowing that this was the last time he would be able to present his art.

INCLUDES
  • Meet the Filmmakers, a new interview with director Neo Sora and cinematographer Bill Kirstein
  • Trailer

Really looking forward to the Sakamoto Opus release. It's such an artful and powerful film. I wonder why there's no 4K, but I'm sure the Blu-ray will be beautiful.

My guess is that Criterion didn't see much value in the titles part of the Janus Contemporaries to get a 4K release. I wonder if there ever will be a 4K Janus Contemporary title but I feel like all of these titles aren't as popular as the ones in the main lineup (Where they compete against famous classic films and such). With that said, this will be my first Janus Contemporary title as I have been meaning to watch this film for a while now (Don't have Criterion Channel unfortunately, henceforth why I still haven't seen it).

[Show spoiler]This, I hope, is an obvious joke to everyone. i actually have little to no photo-editing skills, and with the elements I added to this, including taking the logo directly from the original photo, I'm rather proud of how it turned out

Do you think Blonde would be a good release for Criterion to get ahold of?

What would be even more amazing is if the Criterion Closet toy truck came with miniature blu-rays and dvds inside the truck. Each one would be the size of a grain of sand but the nanotechnology behind this would be astounding. Thick "Polly Pockets" but only for film buffs. Now that is something I'd like to see.
