I was suspicious when I saw that recent rash of Kino 4Ks (all Criterion crossovers) going out of print after only a couple of years. I would not be surprised if we see Criterion 4Ks of Dressed to Kill and The Night of the Hunter in the near future—maybe even The Silence of the Lambs, though Kino still appears to have that one in print for the time being.

Save new bonus materials, the Kino 4Ks will suffice for most I'd think, especially since many people (myself included) upgraded from the Criterion Blu-rays to the 4Ks Kino were offering (I, being the collector I am, still kept the Criterion Blu-rays though in all of those instances.)

Night of the Hunter I think is an absolute certainty.

I did the same, hung onto my Criterion Blus, mostly for the different extras, but the KINO releases were no slouch in that department for most of them (getting whole movies as extras in some releases was certainly an excellent offer and will make me miss KINO putting out older classics on 4K).

Tangerine seems less likely, as I don't think Criterion has released any Magnolia films before. If it did come out, I imagine it'd be locked to Blu-ray.
Tangerine will maybe get a reissue from Magnolia through Vinegar Syndrome/OCN.

Honestly, I just want to pick up the titles I missed out on that being The Killing, and In the Heat of the Night as The Great Escape got that nice box set from Arrow that I’m planning on buying in February, but I’ll buy a re issue of Night of the Hunter as I need the Blu-Ray as I can’t do anything with the 4K I own currently as I don’t have a 4K Blu-Ray player yet.

I watched the old CC disk before selling it in anticipation of the box set. When I watched CE on the new set it was only a couple of months later and honestly I couldn't figure out what was different and what all the broohaha was about

I feel like maybe I don't pay enough attention... or maybe I'm just drawn into the movie itself.

Didn't Kino also release a 4K of Marienbad? I would not be mad at a CC 4K of that one too. I haven't picked up the Kino yet and could go for uniformity with all my other Resnais CCs lol

Also I would pick up Manchurian Candidate and Dressed To Kill 4Ks since I don't have the Kinos either.

Last Year at Marienbad is Studio Canal, and Kino has released quite a few of their titles. The Criterion blu-ray went OOP long before Kino released their own blu-ray of it.

Plus, I couldn't tell you the last time Criterion released a Studio Canal film.

Sorry if it's been covered already but how can CC release Some Like It Hot in 4K when Kino just released it two years ago? Also, CC released the BD prior to that. What's the deal?

Kino only got 4K rights, and they're now expired, and their release is OOP.

The same is true for these as well:

12 Angry Men
Dressed To Kill
The Great Escape
In The Heat of the Night
Killer's Kiss
The Killing
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
The Night of the Hunter
Paths of Glory

Kino have had the rights for several years, even if they only got around to releasing it in recent ones.

It seems like licensing deals with MGM are sometimes short term. Kino, Shout, Arrow, Fun City all have released titles that went OOP very quickly. I'm still waiting for someone to re-license A Fish Called Wanda, I snoozed and lost on that one.

I remember when Twilight Time was in its prime; Nick Redman commented that MGM wanted them to release films quicker than what they were doing. It could be that Criterion always had plans to release 4k releases of these, but at their own sweet time. MGM probably wanted them on the market sooner and decided to license to Kino. This is all just speculation, and I could be wrong. But this is how I read all of this.

I'm going to start assuming there will be release with each month's announcements throughout the year.

While it may be a easy money maker for Criterion, I see no point in them becoming a rerelease label for KINO under any circumstances.
Come on, Professor...you know better than that. These 4K re-releases are not typical double-dips. We were all surprised when KLSC announced those 4K releases for a bunch of films that Criterion had released on BD. KLI was clearly irritated when he posted that the KL titles would be going out of print. This is obviously the result of some behind-the-scenes arm-twisting to wrest those titles back from Kino specifically so that Criterion could release them in 4K now that they've entered that market.

Especially we're still getting 6 new releases in addition to Some Like it Hot, I don't really understand why anyone is surprised or disappointed by that announcement. We also should not be surprised by the inevitable 4Ks of legacy Criterion titles like The Manchurian Candidate, Night of the Hunter, 12 Angry Men, Dressed to Kill, etc. later this year.

Anyone that's happy with their KL disc can simply choose not to buy the Criterion version. To be honest, for most of these I never even felt the need to upgrade my Criterion BD. But regardless, I don't see anything here to be upset about.

As a side note, it really makes me respect a label less when their social media presence frequently throws shade or shows a bad attitude online. I remember them doing this with Friedkin over the HDR grading delays on To Live and Die in LA, and how they completely burned their bridges in public with Sofia Coppola. I get the exasperation. This is a business where a lot of elbows get thrown. But in public? It’s not professional. I’d rather they spent their time selling their often exemplary product.

If it wasn't already bad enough that the vast majority of Criterion's output is lazy 4k "upgrades" while other movies languish away on substandard formats (or many never even seeing releases), they're now saturating the market with 4ks on top of already-released 4ks.

And this is without going into the continued transparent pandering after the NY Times article. Joke of a label.

End of February or more likely sometime in March. Pick a big release in that time frame and it will usually be on that Tuesday.

Every Criterion announcement feels like reading the same newspaper over and over without knowing you're about to read the same newspaper. Kind of like deja vu lol. I had to do a double take with Some Like It Hot. I was like, that just got a 4K, didn't it? They're obviously playing catch up with the 4K upgrades because they were late getting into the format, but they're doing it at the expense of lesser films waiting their turn.
