I can't speak for all of them but I know the George Stevens doc is included in Woman Of The Year from Criterion and in the Giant Digibook from WHV.

Zero clue on who would have this but I do want to say that I have seen Umbrella release a few of their titles on Vinegar's site as a partner label so there could be chances that it gets released in the US by Umbrella as well.

Granted, I also think Umbrella would've done the US partner label release already since they already announced the 4K in Australia.

If not for Umbrella, my bet is either Criterion or Indicator within the next year or two perhaps. Those are the only other labels I can think of that have released Ozploitation movies though Wake in Fright is not as trashy or campy as some Ozploitation movies and feels closer to Walkabout and Picnic at Hanging Rock in terms of seriousness and quality.

For my money, I would love to see either Vinegar themselves or Arrow as I like their encoding the most (Prices and Arrow's customer service, however, I do not like).

So honestly I don't even know what to expect from Criterion this year as predicting titles isn't worth it. I really do think Flow, and Brother From Another Planet are coming in July though any other titles are up in the air for me.
Last year's July had arguably its two biggest titles from the same studio: Pat Garrett and Risky Business are both from WB.

Hud could happen, though it just popped up on my bingo card today.

Flow, I'd say that's certain, but it won't be the biggest title of the slate. (Had they not already dated it, I think they would've made Anora a July title, if for no other reason because they got first home video dibs on a Best Picture winner.

The Brother From Another Planet...not sure if it's July, but it will happen, as it's been confirmed to be with them. I don't know the last time Criterion did a PD title, but this will be good. And unlike the last disc, which was taken from a print (it was still amazing), this time it's the OCN, so it will smoke even that old disc.

Unless the rights have lapsed, it wouldn't shock me if Criterion does a 4K of Watership Down at some point. The only real issue with the old Blu-ray was some macroblocking, which a new 4K could (should) easily take care of.

I Know Where I'm Going!, Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut, Captain Blood, High And Low, Splendor In The Grass, Ben-Hur, and Doctor Zhivago are also at the finish line, just waiting for someone to release them.

If we got Brazil and Sorcerer in June, July's going to be legendary.

Watership Down already got a 4K from BFI which I have it’s a nice set gosh I need to upgrade to a 4K player this summer so I can see how it looks I personally think the rights are with BFI. I ain’t picking up a re-release 4K of Watership Down as I already got the BFI 4K I think I’m good no 4K double dipping for me.

Also the BFI release has so many special features like so so many

Thank you! I always find your posts jam packed with information about restorations, possible releases etc.

I had forgotten the George Stevens documentary was on the Woman of the Year release. Since Talk of the Town was released in December, I am more optimistic that The More the Merrier is coming eventually.

The news about Hud just made my week.

Do we know of something being up with Scanners?

https://www.amazon.com.mx/Scanners-B...&th=1&psc=1&m=

It said it was over $100 when I clicked it. When I came back a few minutes later to fill out the post, the Blu-ray was up to $422, and the DVD was over $550, despite the Criterion website listing both as in print.

The OG Blu/DVD combo isn't on either website, so it's not even like a rare old copy is jamming things up. This is the 1-disc Blu-ray and the 2-disc DVD going for hundreds. Do we know anything?

That’s a weird link to some kind of site with a .mx domain? It’s a dead link when you preview it.

Seems normal when you just search for it regularly.

I think it's Mexican Amazon. I clicked it from the "Best Blu-ray Movie Deals" section at the top of this website. (Also, I'm set to "All countries", so if you're not, then click the "Blu-ray" above the search bar, hit the flag, select "All countries", then reload, and you'll likely see Scanners listed at $422.11. Click it, and it takes you to amazon.mx - the Mexican Amazon.

Yeah, I just searched directly on the Amazon Mexican site and saw the same thing. Weird. Definitely not happening on the American site.

Don't let the dollar sign fool you. Amazon.mx is the Amazon Mexico store. Their prices are in Mexican pesos which use the same currency sign as the US dollar ($). The Mexican peso is worth a little less than a nickel (5 cents American), so $422 in Mexican pesos comes to a little over $20 in US dollars.

Rick

Okay, I should’ve thought of that. Thanks for the very useful clarification!

The levels of history-rewriting going on regarding Last Tango in Paris is reaching insane levels. To imply it was never a well-regarded movie is just plain absurd.

How about we read up a little before making fools of ourselves? My personal cinema-themed library isn't even that expansive, and yet Tango is often mentioned, in books as varied as David Bordwell's Film Art: An Introduction, Ebert's Great Movies and 1001 Movies to Watch Before You Die. Like mande2013 mentioned above, it's not a stranger to Greatest of All Time lists since it came out.

It's fine if you personally dislike it or just want to lash out at it on Maria Schneider's behalf, but at least be honest about it without resorting to confabulation.

With them all having passed and no more evidence added to their filmographies, it can be hard to estimate what might have been, but Truffaut's image was not as strong among cinephiles as the 70's went on. I know because I was there and found myself constantly defending him against naysayers who were giving up on him.
As long as we're still mentioning the works of these directors with any reverence is a sign that their legacies remains intact. We're also talking about directors with large filmographies and I can guarantee you no one, not a single solitary soul on Earth now or has ever been on Earth, considered every film of theirs to be a classic.

For directors who've stopped making films, we think of their careers in totality. That's why no one points to Truffaut's Confidentially Yours, Bertolucci's Me & You or Antonioni's Beyond the Clouds as the final say on their work.

Having pre-ordered the 4K of «*Last Tango*», I still have to ask why some people get so up in arms over «*cancel culture*» when the people implicated, such as Polanski and Klaus Kinski, have in fact done reprehensible things? Sure. Some people will say if you canceled every single artist on account of their personal shortcomings you’d be left with very little art, but there’s a difference between the Polanskis of the world and people who were simply *******s like Godard and Bergman.

I think fundamentally, people are on guard against cancelling cultural figures because they feel it just becomes an obfuscatory way of justifying one’s own philistinism.

Probably because we have laws that speak for themselves. But a good film is a good film, regardless of a law that a cast or crew member failed to respect. There are people on both sides of these viewpoints. A lot of film fans tend to respect film as a medium much more. Cancel culture works against this and can be freaking annoying.

The one that irritated me most was Grasshopper Films cancelling two Sion Sono films, one was already preordered!, because of "allegations". Some people don't even wait for a day in court anymore. Cancel culture needs to be cancelled. Just my opinion, don't mean to offend anyone.

True, but I don't think my post dismissed any of them outright, it merely commented via anecdotal evidence from my own experiences during the 1970's, which is nowhere near gospel and certainly not how I meant it nor for anyone to take it that way.

Although some very famous directors who were lauded back in those days have pretty much lost their legacies, such as Claude LeLouch, I would never claim that for Bertolucci or Truffaut or Antonioni, just that their stars aren't as shiny as they once were.

To respond to the post above yours from my old buddy Cremildo regarding LAST TANGO IN PARIS, there is no revisionist history from me, it was very well regarded during its tenure and after, but recently took a hit with the behind the scenes revelations and for good reason. I personally do not find much worth in most of Bertolucci's work anymore and now watch them just to catalog how many scenes cater to his foot fetishism, ala Tarantino.
