Extras comparison

The Truffaut set includes some new extras with Introducing My Father interview. The BFI release of The 400 Blows has some minor exclusive extras like Catherine Wheatley presentation and Paris archive shorts. The Fox Lorber DVD included a Glenn Kenny commentary. The Artificial Eye BDs of Stolen Kisses and Bed and Board includes a French language commentary with Claude de Givray and Claude Jade, and Marie-France Pisier commentaries on Antoine and Colette and Love on the Run.

The Big Heat has several new extras (Silver/Ursini commentary, Nehme video essay, Bachmann/Bogdanovich audio interview), but is missing from the Twilight Time and Indicator a different commentary with Dobbs/Kirgo/Redman, isolated score, Rayns interview and booklet.

So I take it that his preference would be that we never address or feature rape in any films. The punctuation is confusing but he's not saying "when they feel completely unnecessary", he seems to be saying it always feels unnecessary, which I can't agree with. Rape is a fact of life and can't be outside the remit of art. Indeed, many people who've undergone such abuses find it cathartic to see it being addressed even if it's difficult to watch. Obviously there's a world of difference between THE ACCUSED and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE but again, people should be given information and allowed to make their own choices.
Yeah I guess I over-exaggerated a bit on that the whole rape scenes are completely unnecessary in films, but I still stand by on the fact that they’re incredibly despicable, and wicked, and evil acts as someone that gets triggered by any rape scene in film. Still no rape scenes shouldn’t be censored in film I guess I kind of went overboard on that statement whoops.

Barry Lyndon and Carnal Knowledge are both day one for me, and probably the Trauffaut boxset during the november sale.

I am actually not too big on The Big Heat despite being a big Lang fan, will probably revisit it eventually to see if I care enough to upgrade, though.

I think that's why they loaded June up too, since they know many people will be saving the purchases of those till the following month. With that said, Barry Lyndon, The Big Heat, plus the Antoine Donel set is still a pretty major month.

Oof. I had low expectations, but not this low. For me personally, this might be their worst July slate. Very shocked at no Flow, and not sure what's taking so long there. Was at least expecting Hud. Would have been a nice surprise if we got the Misumi Sword Trilogy, but expected at least one Kurosawa like High and Low. Either way, another month of Criterion disappointing me.

For years, rumor had it that Criterion had the rights to Carnal Knowledge. Glad that they finally decided to release it.

How does the rest of the Antoine Doinel movies compare to The 400 Blows? I've been hesitant to watch them because I thought the open-ended nature of the end of the 400 Blows was so good. I'm not sure I want to know what happens next. I worry that seeing his story continue will take away from that ending for me.

But if they're all masterpieces or something, maybe it's worth it.

Barry Lyndon is one of the most beautifully shot films in history. A dream release. Thanks Criterion.

In for all of them!

I really like the artwork for The Big Heat! But I feel like I always like Sister Hyde's artwork, she's one of my favorites doing the covers!

I had forgotten too. I would have still saved it for November predictions in any event

I can’t even process that. This is the most “Criterion” month in ages. This is the old-guard canon that Criterion based their entire LD collection on. Truffaut, Lang, Kubrick, Nichols. I mean, my God, this would’ve been the greatest slate of classic Criterion releases in history. I know you’re *personally* disappointed - which is fine! - but it seems just contrarian to not see that this is an absolute murderer’s row of their backbone titles. Only Grand Illusion would’ve made it more perfect in that respect.

(I’m not saying it’s the best month ever - just that, in terms of what Criterion was known for, this is kind of the apotheosis of that.)

I know we were all anticipating Flow, but I get it. They’ve shifted it from Janus Contemporaries to a full Criterion release. They’re having to assemble a whole different package (or, if they were working on a follow-up full release for the collection, maintaining their original production schedule). In either case, clearly, the extras aren’t remotely done.

Interestingly, if you look at the cover photos Criterion just posted on Instagram, it looks like Barry Lyndon 4K appears to be a digipack.

Two observations:

1) No MGM upgrades
2) Feel even more confident that High and Low will be specifically timed with the Spike Lee version

I love it too. This is the most Greg Ruth-like of any of the titles she’s done, which is interesting. She really is incredibly versatile.

That is what they said they were going to do at the Criterion Closet Van at SXSW. Still you'd think that the release date for the remake would have been announced by now.
