Never watched it, but Cairo Station sounds tempting.
Now wishing for Criterion UK to release it as well, importing from the UK is safer for me.

“I’m So Excited!” (in my best Cat in the Hat voice) for Shoeshine. The two Ichikawa films are definite buys also. This was a pleasant reminder of what, for me, Criterion used to do almost every month regarding announcements.

Impossible to please both groups at the same time. Sometimes I think if Criterion should have 10 slots every month, with 5 being new to HD worldwide and the other 5 being UHD upgrades. But even then, we would still get a lot of *****ing, just as what happens in every WAC announcement, when there are always pissed off and insufferable people whose complaints boil down to "not the films I care about", emphasis on "I". People just can't seem to understand how diverse films are, and they need to be more open to new experiences.
To all this I say WHO CARES?

Is anyone’s happiness over new announcements ever dependent on EVERYONE sharing their happiness? What difference does it make who or why some feel indifferent to new titles being announced? I’m sure Criterion doesn’t care and it doesn’t influence them in any way whatsoever. If you’re personally happy about new titles coming out, isn’t that enough? Does the rest of the world need to share your enthusiasm in order for it to be valid?

As for me, I’m very stoked about FIRES ON THE PLAIN which I first saw in film class when I was a teenager. An incredible work of art that took too long to be released as a 4K. The other titles are all interesting and I would probably pick them all up if I could afford it.

No, and I've never made the claim to have any insider knowledge. If you read my posts, I've actually stated numerous times that I find info like leaks via sleuthing, and finding info myself, etc..

What is weak ass every month is people feeling a need to post for any label that it's a "weak ass month" or "nothing for me to buy this month" or "glad I have lots of BDs I haven't watched" etc etc.

Why the need to announce your own peculiar tastes to the world at large? And why should we care anyway? If certain particular kinds of releases don't sell much a label will likely modify their release plans. If they don't sell just to you, personally, I doubt they could possibly care less. I'm sure they don't care if I don't buy a release either.

All these releases sound interesting to me. I saw CAIRO STATION as part of a Noir City film festival last year and it was a terrific film. As well as a great restoration that is presumably the same as the basis for the Criterion release.

Personally, I don’t know anything about the films announced today. But I like seeing peoples’ excitement over them. This kind of enthusiasm makes me curious enough to google these movies and see what they’re about. In the past, I’ve been introduced to films like Werckmeister Harmonies due to just reading about what people think here on the forums. So I try to be not so quick to pull the “weak ass month” out of my head because honestly, for me, that would just be disingenuous.

Well, I remember you being very dismissive of another person who regularly broke news on new releases. I think his username is DAWN OF THE DISCS? Does that person claim to be an insider? Would you say you get a little jealous of others who try to get scoops or do you just want to expose them as being potentially unreliable?

That’s my point too. Why does everyone feel the need to do the opposite and praise the announcements and cheer for them and announce all their intended buys and pledge their tributes? It’s the same as people feeling a need to express the other side. In general, it’s what makes a forum. How dull would it be to just hear everyone saying variations of the same thing over and over?

Vintage Arabic cinema is very difficult to come by so CAIRO STATION should be a fascinating watch. I saw some old Egyptian pictures starring a very young Omar Sharif on, of all places, Netflix a few years ago and I really enjoyed them. I would love to see more underrepresented ethnic cinema and I used to live by a Public Library that was loaded with DVDs of them, even a Bulgarian historical epic! But now that I live in Europe such a variety of film culture isn’t too easy to find. The WORLD CINEMA PROJECT sets from Criterion are the some of the greatest releases they’ve ever done.

There are people who can be respectful. When a Criterion line-up is not for them, they'll just say "not for me", and that's fine. My criticism is against those people who think that a line-up has to be specifically catered to them and get angry at Criterion (I'm looking at DukeTogo84 getting angry and even almost wishing the end of Criterion because he dislikes how common 4K upgrades from them have become). I hate all sorts of entitlement. This is art, not a McDonald's. There's no list that is going to please everyone, so the complaining is pointless. And if you want to say that calling a line-up great is, by the same token, also pointless, then go ahead, it would be coherent with my criticisms. There are people in the WAC thread who get pissed off whenever Warner Archive announces any animation, it's like animation is not deserving of releases!

There are some people who only want 4K upgrades of big titles and couldn't care less about new to HD little known films, and they are loudly and angrily voicing how much they dislike August's line-up. And there are people who only want the new to HD releases of little known films, and they love to loudly and angrily voice how much they disliked June and July's line-ups. Both groups are insufferable.

No matter what Criterion does, there are going to be people whining. Ultimately, all complaints really boil down to just "but not the films I wanted". First, be open-minded and give chances to more movies. Second, the world of films is so vast and diverse that it is impossible to make any list that will tailor to everyone's tastes.
I think some people have a different idea of what Criterion is or should be.

Just to refresh everyone's memory.

Where are you going with this? Dawn of the Discs is notorious for posting specious information online, MifuneFan didn’t make that up.
