Yi Yi has a brand new 4K restoration showing at the Ritrovato festival as well, so we can possibly expect a future 4K upgrade of that too, especially with it being the 25th anniversary of the film.

Restored in 4K in 2025 by Pony Canyon at IMAGICA Entertainment Media Services, from the original 35mm acetate negative. Audio restored by Tu Duu-Chih, from the Hi8 sound source stored in Taiwan. Grading by Noboru Yamaguchi under the supervision of Kaili Peng

Edit: Warner considers the anniversary of DOG DAY AFTERNOON to be in December for some reason so I will say sometime between September and December for that one.
In L.A. It opened very limited in October and played exclusively at Mann's National in Westwood for two months up until opening citywide on Christmas Day. I think it may have not have not have had a big release until December.

It would be great if a Dog Day Afternoon 4K came from Criterion.

Found out this weekend that Umbrella teased releases of MEMENTO and FOLLOWING (both very possibly in 4K) for sometime in 2025 so I definitely think those come from Criterion in 4K in the US.

That said, it's a safe bet Umbrella would bring on Fidelity in Motion for a 4K release of MEMENTO and that would almost certainly make it the superior one.

However, it always confused me that Criterion broke up The Coward and The Holy Man since they were also linked by their Bengali titles (Kapurush O Mahapurush) as well as being released in theaters on the same day. I always watched them together growing up. However, I suppose there is not much commercial interest in a standalone release for those two specific films.

I just want to see my favorites restored and released before my parents, especially my father are gone.
Which films are you referring to? I can't seem to find The Coward and The Holy Man releases on Criterion. My favorite films are The Apu Trilogy, and I've seen The Coward and The Music Room (the latter which left me feeling cold, but it has grown on me throughout the years; I particularly remember the editing; I might do a rewatch soon). A Ray marathon might be in order this year to watch old favorites, discover new ones, and reevaluate others.

The Coward was released as a special feature on the The Big City (Mahanagar) release. The Holy Man is only available on Criterion Channel.

One of my favorite films is The Adversary. There is a 4K restoration of the film completed by the National Film Archive of India. It was screened at Cannes in 2022. I was hoping the release delay was because they wanted to complete the other films Company Limited and The Middleman.

National Film Archive of India has completed 4K restorations of the following films:
  • The Golden Fortress (Shonar Kella)
  • Distant Thunder (Ashani Shanket)
  • Kingdom of Diamonds (Hirak Rajar Deshe)
  • The Stranger (Agantuk)
  • Enemy of the People (Ganashatru)

The latter two being in the Eclipse set, I imagine Criterion would just be happy to upgrade the streaming masters on the Channel but not release them on Blu-ray.

Growing up Satyajit Ray and other Bengali filmmakers were a big deal in my family. People in my parents generations love these films. Sadly their kids (my friends) only watch Hindi movies.

Janus/Criterion is also credited with Howard Brookner's ROBERT WILSON AND THE CIVIL WARS.

Okay, the Seth Meyers one rocketed to the top of my all-time favorites. Such a cogent and specific run through the closet, and surprisingly timely at points with his discussion of Grand Budapest Hotel and Army of Shadows. Some wonderful anecdotes as well.

You know, a John Cazale boxset would be a nice way to honor one of the greatest actors of the American New Wave (and would include some of the best films of that New Wave).

I know, it's just a fantasy. At least DDA completes the set.

I think we can credit Seth Myers with the first Ted Knight reference in closet history. Well done, Seth. Well done indeed.

What about Shatranj ke Khiladi aka The Chess Players, any news of that one being restored? I would love to have a good restored version of that, one of my fav Ray films. It is amusing, a film that used almost half the lead cast of Sholay (Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan and in voiceover Amitabh Bachchan) for an entirely different, almost antithetical drama. Amjad's performance as the ubder-refined almost effeminate Wajid Ali Shah was the very opposite of his rugged and crude dacoit Gabbar Singh in Sholay

Artificial Eye in the UK released Holy Man (Mahapurush) on its own and as part of a box set, which are both OOP:

I'd love to see an uncut release of Teen Kanya. I've only ever seen the international version, which omits the Monihara short.

Also, there are three Goopy-Bagha films.

They did announce March titles on Friday December 13th 2024, so it's possible, but I think it's safer to assume it'll be Monday.

I was at a screening of The Freshman at Stanford Theatre last night where they had Suzanne Lloyd, Harold's granddaughter. She mentioned Criterion is working on putting out Girl Shy by the end of the year, is that new information or has it been hinted at before?

It's new information as far as I know. Recent rumblings have also pointed to some work being done on preparing Why Worry? for release.

I tried looking in the review, but didn't see it mentioned if the CC 4K disc of The Shape of Water is the same encode/transfer/etc as the initial release by Fox. Anyone know the answer to this?

It was presented uncut on DVD in a decent transfer in the Tagore Stores on Film boxset released by NFDC-Shemaroo. That one's long OOP, though.
