The original Serpent's Path has been added to Janus's site.

2277 could be popping up soon as it is currently 404'd.

For sure people will pay higher prices sometimes, but even outside the 50% off sales you can find them for less than full price. Criterion's own website normally lists at 20% off MSRP and sometimes has 30% sales; Amazon and other retailers are typically the same or even lower.

Not everyone is willing to wait months for a sale on a release they really want. Personally, though, I have so much in my unwatched pile I'm usually able to hold out until the sales

Excellent. Maybe even an October release?

Wonder if they also picked up Eyes of the Spider as Kurosawa filmed the films back to back and are thematically similar and were meant to be watched close together. Would be great if they release both.

I actually own three editions of The Big Heat now, since it is one of my all-time favorite films. I will sell off my Twilight Time copy to the above-mentioned shop, but I feel strangely inclined to keep my Powerhouse/Indicator copy for now.

Literally was about to post this. Haha.

Hopefully this means Stray Dog and Red Beard will be released in the near future.

Well, this is a 1st .

My B&N order came in. and Only 1 films was what I ordered. Clearly they sent me someone else order and mixed up the labeling.

Welp, gotta make an actual trip this evening now. Kinda funny seeing 6 films in a box I already own

I may have gone a bit too hard when I noticed I had some amazon fun money from my job from last christmas/rewards for this recognition program we have.

This isnt accounting for the order I placed with Barnes and Noble when the sale started. I'll be set at least until the Black Friday sale.

That's great news about the STRAY DOG and RED BEARD upgrades, but I wish RAN, DRUNKEN ANGEL, and THE BAD SLEEP WELL had been included.

Mosfilm restored Letter Never Sent (1959) in 4K over five years ago. Do you think there's a chance that this restoration might be released in the US, despite the current geopolitical tensions with Russia? Or should I just grab the existing Blu-ray from 2012?

The 4K restoration is a big improvement over the old master, so I would say that Mosfilm's Youtube upload:

is better than the Criterion blu-ray, despite Youtube's compression.

So it might just be worth it to stick with that and wait and see if an English-friendly disc of it ever gets released.

Snagged myself a 4K copy of Del Toro's Pinocchio at Barnes. Happy to be able to add another movie to the Del Toro film catalogue. Got my eye on a few more titles before the sale ends, but it's no biggy if I don't get around to it- they'll be on sale again before too long.

It's highly, highly, highly unlikely it's coming anytime soon. I think the vast sanctions preclude any licensing arrangement that would get out a legitimate release in the west. (See also: Dersu Uzala)

What’s the general consensus on the Wong Kar-Wai boxset?

I’ve seen some critical comments regarding glitchy discs and color timing changes.

For those who own it, is it worth the cost?

I’ve been watching all of his films on Max and he’s on a short list of my very favorite directors.

I think he’s a legitimate genius.

Went into my local Barnes and Noble to get Seven Samurai 4k. I upgraded from DVD to 4k. The new master visually is a huge upgrade. I think this visual upgrade made the subtitles easier to read. From the start of the film I noticed the title credits don’t look wobbly any longer. Much more stable image. The biggest upgrade to me is the audio. It sounds so much clearer.

The A/V section at the B&N was pretty bad. The right side was filled with funko pops and puzzles and games. Cd section was teeny. The whole back wall was overpriced vinyl. The Criterion section was half the short wall. There were between 4 to 6 copies of some films such as Scarface, Funny Girl, and Mishima. But then, I think I got the last copy of Seven Samurai. I also didn’t see a lot of films that would have tempted me. Also the biggest issue was that no employees were in the section at all. I decided to take my film and go to the front register. As soon as I left the area an alarm went off. I sat there for a minute and nobody came to help me. I decided to hold the film over my head and walk out of the section and go to front register.

There were some bad discs early on, but easily replaced by Criterion if there's even really any still out there. You just have to play one of the possibly bad discs to see if it works right or not, and the others will end up being bad as well (from memory the first disc plays fine regardless, but the others may or may not).

For me, while watching, none of the changes bothered me much, I just really dug watching all the films again. Only one film I hadn't seen before.

(But in general I do not appreciate obvious color timing changes (where white is no longer white for example), so I'm not quite that easy.)

Well worth the cost to me, in spite of the sucky packaging.

But I'm also holding on to my older copies of these movies and still intend to go back and watch them too.
