Well Dvds changed a number of times, so don't get your hopes up. Snap cases, regular cases, cardboard cases, digipaks, 5-disc sets, etc.

There was never a standard for DVD. 99% of Blu-Rays come in a blue case. That won't change.

Hmm? Afaik Ben Button is the only Criterion Blu with a slipcover so far (and Monterey Pop).

Wait, do you mean you got a digipak without a slipcover? Or the plastic case?

If it came in the plastic case, there isn't supposed to be a slipcover.

Went to the Barnes and Noble across from my office today to "scout" which Criterion blu-rays I might want to get during the upcoming 50% off sale. I only started collecting Blu-Rays two months ago, the only Criterion titles I have so far are Last Year At Marienbad and The Third Man, so this is a real opportunity to stock up somewhat.

Thinking about getting six titles. So far those will likely be:

-Wings Of Desire (assuming my store here gets it in)
-Kagemusha
-Bottle Rocket
-The 400 Blows

Then rounding out with some combination of The Last Metro/Chungking Express/El Norte/The Last Emperor/Pierrot Le Fou. Can't quite decide what to go with yet. The only title I've seen is Chungking Express; I bought the DVD not too long ago, for those reasons alone I might skip getting it on Blu right now and go with some titles I don't own/haven't seen. Any suggestions?

Anybody else have a game plan for this sale? Or am I the only one putting way too much thought into this?

plastic case = no slipcase

cardboard case = slipcase
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm guessing the cardboard case is the better one to have? How do you go about getting that one? Obviously it would be hard to get it now but I didn't know there were two versions.

There is no way of knowing if The Third Man will come in a plastic or cardboard unless you buy the film in person. Members have bought The Third Man from Amazon and they are coming in the plastic cases. There are some reports of Barnes & Nobles having the cardboard cases in the store, I can vouch for this as my B&N has the cardboard case for the film.

I ordered my Third Man Blu-ray from Best Buy, I am hoping it comes in the plastic case, less chance of shelf wear when compared to the cardboard case.
Good point on shelf wear...I was just trying to figure out why Criterion released two different versions. I was unaware of that. Thanks for the info!

It depends how low the price will be... but right now I may pick up all Criterion Blu-rays that I'm still missing or The Seventh Seal, Pierrot Le Fou and Playtime.

But part of me wants to really go for the expensive DVD box sets if they are offered cheap like 4 By Agnès Varda, the Brd Trilogy, Eisenstein: The Sound Years, The Orphic Trilogy, A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman and the Adventures of Antoine Doinel.

But I also may want to pick up to the 10 Rialto Pictures Box... But if that Essential Art House 50 Years 50-disc set is around the 200's... that may be a bit tempting.

There's too many things that I want.

No dvd's did not change a number of times. You had Keep cases and Snappers. The retards at WB's used the snappers..(cough just like they are doing with those silly digi books now)

Man, you really keep pimping the $13 Criterion, I see, huh? I've seen you proclaiming it a few times, I'm sure. I just find it funny, that's all.

That's great if someone wants to spend $25, or whatever, to become a member of a store that usually sales their movies and music at retail price. And then you're probably going to argue back that they can cancel their membership within 30 days to get their money back. Then, you're also counting on the $5-off coupons to work for everyone on every single purchase, which, of course, the results are going to vary from customer-to-customer and store-to-store, I imagine.

Just saying that not everyone, I'm sure, is going to have the same string of luck with those $5-off coupons that you seem to have, so promoting the $13 Criterion blu-ray isn't ideal.

A lesson learned - Made my first Criterion Blu-ray purchase from eBay for "For All Mankind" and no original case (just standard blue blu-ray case) and also no 28-page booklet Returning this one.

I'll just buy new from amazon, (or other notable online stores) or used from traders on blu-ray.com.

I'm pretty sure For All Mankind only comes in a plastic case so they wouldn't be selling replacements.

And the booklet isn't included with the extra cases so you're screwed either way

Will just buy new from amazon or used from traders on blu-ray.com but man this blows! Well, now I can just hope that Criterion sells a case for this title for $5.
Wow, that does suck, man! I'd be upset about that. Unfortunately, though, I can't imagine Criterion will be offering a replacement case, per say, for this title because it already comes in the plastic case. What I would do, though, is just write Jon Mulvaney over at Criterion and explain your situation and just ask if they happen to have any extra cases and/or booklets lying around for "For All Mankind." I know I've gotten booklets from them in the past for free, so there's a chance with that, at least. It might cost you a few bucks for the case and booklet, though, if available.
