Default No thanks, I have asthma...

Since you all know better than I...

Has there been any current Blu releases, that have already received a later Criterion release???

Reason I ask, is that I fully expect to buy Fear and Loathing tomorrow, but could possibly hold off if I knew a CC release may be in the works six months from now...

If there's no reason to think a Criterion release is in the cards, I'll just buy the regular...

Any thoughts???

Cheers,

Doc

No, Criterion will not be releasing the film on Blu-Ray.

Actually the Blu-rays are on a junky shelf my neighbor gave me and the DVDs are actually on the floor....

I had shelves set up inside a closet in our old house, but here, because of the sloped walls/ceilings of the "Attic" I currently have all of my DVDs on the floor.... in piles.... I think I may need to "Make" a shelving solution, but I want it to look nice..... I think I'll find the studs in the wall, and do all "Floating" shelves, but I'm not sure yet.

EDIT:

and DR. Steve.....

I'd buy the Fear and Loathing Blu that's coming out now..... I doubt you'll ever see Criterion get the rights back.

Yep.. sadly Fear and Loathing is coming out on regular Blu. Looks like no Criterion Blu release. Oh well, I'll probably but it on Blu anyway.

Do those multi-case sets like Monterrey Pop have different spine numbers or is it just the same number on both cases?

Also, can someone tell me what day each month Criterion announces new releases? I noticed last month it was the 15th. Is it always on the 15th?

For Monterey, the two cases each have a different spine number (identical to the spine numbers of the separate releases of the two titles). The cardboard box actually has a third spine number.

For Che, both parts together count as one spine number.

Criterion normally announces right around the 15th. There is no set day - sometimes it will be a day earlier, or a few days late, etc.

I decided to sit down and watch "Shadows" from the John Cassavetes box set. I've read how this film was influential in jumpstarting independent film.

Cassavetes who pretty much funded his films by the money he made from acting, the Criterion Collection did a good job in showcasing his workshop and how his actors from the workshop took part in the film and how improvisation was being used.

But there was something I've read years ago but decided to follow-up on it now that I got the box set and was able to watch the film (which I enjoyed a lot) was that there was a film that was created of "Shadows", a first film before the film that was available on the version we see on the Criterion DVD.

First, I have to say that it was awesome to read how a Ray Carney, a fan of Cassavetes, spent over a decade of his life tracking down and spending a lot of money to find this first print of "Shadows" (and also a longer cut of "Faces").

But after reading the war between Carney and Cassavetes wife in bringing the first print so screen, I am in awe. I didn't know there was so much drama behind-the-scenes esp. for Criterion in releasing the Cassavetes box set.

I also found it interesting by one of the critics comments how Cassavetes should have kept "Shadows" as it was in 1957. But I wish I had a chance to see the 1957 film, a shame it was prevented for ending up on the box set. I found this footage quite interesting.

Its a shame...a first version of "Shadows" and an alternate version of "FACES" will not be in a Cassavetes release. Carney is offering it for free and no takers for fear of a lawsuit.

Yeah, the whole ordeal with Carney was kind of ridiculous. To be honest with you, he really got hosed. Gena Rowlands was just being totally unreasonable about the whole affair IMO. I have actually corresponded with Carney about this issue, and he used to tell me about the hours (and hours) he spent in the Library Of Congress searching and researching, and how he got lucky and found the other print of the film. It was really quite an interesting story, but overall its quite a shame that things played out the way they did. Criterion unfortunately comes out looking quite poor in this instance, but they were pretty much stuck at the mercy of Rowlands, or the set would have never been released. As it stands, I am personally very glad to have the set, but knowing that it could have been that much better does hurt a little bit...

anyway, glad to see another new Cassavetes fan. I can't wait to hear what you think about A Woman Under The Influence.

Just got done watching Kwaidan and found it to be a great film. I like how it resembles Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, in that they are both, for the most part, constructed completly on a soundstage, and relish in that kind of look.

Anyone know of any other Criterion films that have this same type of look? If you have seen both films you will know what I mean. Thanks.

E-mail from Criterion:
Quote:
Dear Criterion collectors,

Our three least favorite initials: OOP. Since we launched the Criterion Collection more than twenty-five years ago, we’ve endeavored to keep everything we’ve published in print. But despite our efforts to renew rights, we are losing a large group of titles from StudioCanal at the end of March, and we wanted to give you advance notice that our editions will be going out of print. Until we’re out of stock, we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website. The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don’t know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.

Here are the titles that will soon be out of print:

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

Take note: this may be your last chance to pick up spine number 1 from the collection.

Happy viewing!
The Criterion Collection

Not gonna happen. Most if not all of the OOP titles will be gone by the time the next sale rolls around.

You'd probably like Patriotism also. (Although it's short and has just two characters.) [Haven't quite got around to the Mishima set yet, saw the film when it first came out.]
