I honestly prefer Serpico or Network. Serpico is unlikely seeing it is a StudioCanal title.
I believe Serpico is a Paramount title in the US.

Network is Warner in the US, I think. Unless they had licensed it from another rights holder.

12 Angry Men - MGM. Possible, I guess.

Fail Safe - Sony. Also possible.

I'd love Serpico on Criterion BD. Perhaps the Studio Canal release will be region-B locked, and Criterion licenses the transfer here in the USA (or creates their own).

The Fugitive Kind has already been announced.

What studios never licensed out a title to Criterion. Paramount could make Serpico a Sapphire release. Has Warner ever licensed anything out?

Has it? I haven't seen that Lumet.

Well it shows you how much I care for that movie then.

Too bad, I love Ghost World - I wonder if people confuse it with other similiarly named films. Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, and in particular Steve Buscemi are all quite good in this. Never heard of Louie Bluie, but I'm sure it's worth checking out.

regarding the content... i say that i 'only' buy movies i'll rewatch over and over. but the reality is that most of my collection just kinda sits there, lulz.

but for criterion, i think i'm more picky, i dunno why. i just feel like i don't wanna become a 'film snob' :P. though most peepz probably think i am already, maybe.

the criterions i do own, i've already explained why i liked it a few pages back. the ones i really do rewatch are: Bottle Rocket, 7th Seal, 400 Blows.

MGM used to own The Fugitive Kind and now Criterion has announced their DVD version of the title... I figure this is due to the fact FOX seems to be releasing (until MGM is bought or sold) MGM titles. This could be a good thing.. it all depends. I could see 12 Angry Men being picked up or possibly Night of the Hunter perhaps.

SONY and Criterion usually never worked together in recent years, I think they made a special deal for BOTTLE ROCKET and Repulsion I believe. So I guess anything is possible.

Wasn't it the last WB Home Theatre Furom chat, news regarding they may do some licensing with Criterion for specific titles... many believed it would be for BADLANDS, I was hoping for BLOW UP under MGM thru WB's. Although secretly I wanted them to give them permission to release THE DEVILS since WB's keeps saying they will release it only for another year to pass the title by.

** I hope once the sell or takeover for the United Artists/ MGM catalog (Excludes the WB share of MGM releases) that it is thru a company that likes working with Criterion because many titles they have released on laserdisc and have featured commentary tracks like SOME LIKE IT HOT. I will say I own the CAV Laser for Carrie that features one of the most not interesting commentary tracks I'd ever heard, then again this could be because of times we now live in with http://www.imdb.com for trvia etc. The track offered nothing new or interesting to hear.

I do treasure the TAXI DRIVER Criterion CAV LD that features Scorsese.

For me that's the biggest point of this forum, to discuss movie releases. To be specific Criterion releases for this thread. I for one don't like to go too in depth on specific movies because it just makes the thread impossibly long (it's already long enough at 308 pages) and noone can keep up with the chatter.

And I want replacement cases not for collection value but rather for neatness. One of the unique things about Criterion for me is the great clear cases. If the original Criterion Blus at least came in traditional blue cases I could tolerate it. But I HATE crappy paper cases, and that is why I am getting replacement cases.

All of the sudden this thread feels like an AA meeting.

Well, the first Criterion I bought was El Norte (spanish being my first language).
Then I started reading more about the rest of the Criterion releases on this website (Third Man, 400 Blows, etc.). Currently I own all of Criterion's blu-ray releases and I plan to keep up with them.
I don't have any DVDs at all, my collection started with blu-ray movies.
Honestly, I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I can barely keep up with the blu-ray releases, since my free time is very limited.

I wouldn't change much from this thread. I can't keep conversation with members who are very knowledgeable about classic/obscure/avant-garde films, but I enjoy reading anyway.
I try to help members that are new or lost whenever I can.
I feel that posts about replacement cases or the like can be skipped by the reader fairly easily, so I don't understand the disgust with these posts.

Let's just keep it real people, and don't forget that even in this thread there are distinct and acquired tastes, so let's try to get along.

After box sets, the next longest single film is the TV version of Fanny and Alexander, which runs 312 minutes (5 hours, 12 minutes). The long version of Scenes from a Marriage (mentioned above) is 299 minutes (4 hours, 59 minutes), and then it's Che (the longest released BD until the Brakhage box set comes out) at 261 minutes (4 hours, 21 minutes).

Ironically, the TV version of Fanny and Alexander is only available in the Fanny and Alexander Box Set.

I have read the reviews..and done a bit of research on the title....but my question is..is Pierrot le fou worth getting? I have never seen a movie from this director at all (and I read somewhere that if you havent, this probably isnt the best place to start). I am all about a good Criterion....but just wasnt sure about this one. Thoughts?

Yes, but it's now OOP and hard to find. I got my copy just in time.

I thought it was an amazing film - but it's also certainly odd, very unlike most other films I've ever seen. There is a concrete central plot, but it feels like a lot of the details are glossed over (and basically irrelevant). The meat of the movie is the two characters' relationship, and their outlooks on life. There are some sequences that I feel would scream "pretentious" to someone not invested in the film - but given the right perspective, I think they can also be viewed as unique and revealing. Overall, a difficult film to describe.

But honestly, I don't think you'd have any trouble getting your money back if you wanted to sell it used afterwards - it going OOP means there will be a market for it.

I would expect only the "big" titles on Blu (The Kid, The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times and The Great Dictator) at best.
If this turns out to be true, then those masterpieces are in the best hands and I can't wait to get mine on them!
