Haha, excellent. It seems Criterion basically has two options: 1) Slow the framerate by 4% to 24fps and pitch correct the audio, which would be the simpler and better-looking option since it involves no duplicate frames or trickery, or 2)Transfer the material to 60hz by adding duplicate frames, basically like 3:2 pulldown from the dvd days, and make the BD transfer 1080i/60. Here, the material would basically run at 'original' speed, but with the dreaded 'jerkiness' from good ol NTSC dvd. I'd be really surprised if it wasn't the first one. There may be another obvious option I haven't considered, in which case someone who knows more about all this crap (haha) than I do feel free to chime in. Or not, since this is sort of slipping into OT territory. Last edited by Alkaline; 04-12-2010 at 08:28 PM. |

Going all Kurosawa is very tempting. I could always get the other stuff at a later date. Are any of those discs going out of print soon ala Third Man/

Good afternoon,
You should try to expose yourself to as many directors as possible. Going out of your comfort zone is the only way to learn more about Cinema. May I recommend Federico Fellini's 8 ½. It is the most important film Criterion have released on Blu-ray thus far. Pro-B |

As I've said before I saw this at IFC, and it was VERY blurry in motion (it was a digital presentation and not film) and I honestly believe that what I saw was running at 25fps and possibly, interlaced 1080, though I would hope IFC would be able to present theatrically at a higher resolution. There is an extremely distinct contrast between the shots in motion, and the gorgeous, crystal clear slow motion shots that do not suffer from motion blur because they run slowly. I would think that on some level, LvT intended this and that is why almost all releases sport 1080i50 transfers. |

I've never actually seen it and was thinking of making a blind buy.
