For companies like Criterion, there are commercial releases that make money for the company and help in purchasing more licenses. But even before that, Criterion used to have many Criterion titles that were commercial/mainstream during the LD years.

No, I'm sure there are others, CG. Actually, I enjoy it... much more than the iconic shot being used on "Black Narcissus."

I guess I was expecting a bit more creativity for those two covers... something other than a film grab with the font color of each title being literal to its title's name.

Yeah, I guess that most people don't realize that Criterion once released "It's A Wonderful Life" and "The Graduate" among many other major titles on laserdisc... even "Ghostbusters" and some James Bond films.

Also on a side note for anyone, Godard's "Film Socialisme" will premiere at Cannes, out of competition of course.
The Red Shoes has a great cover but Black Narcissus is by far the best looking in my view.

Yeah, the font sucks, but I like images of the films to be the cover art every now and then to mix it up a bit.

I have not seen this movie, but that looks like a very complicated shot.
Is that off a cliff, from the top looking in?

Well, it was in a studio on a soundstage meant to look something like that, if that helps answer your question.

Good month. The Red Shoes is a definite buy. The other releases have my interest, but I have to see them all first. Time to Netflix the old Black Narcissus release...

Black Narcissus is a definite purchase, I'm sure it'll be better than the ITV release that's available in the UK (which I don't own). The Red Shoes will have to be pretty spectacular for me to replace my current copy - but it could well happen...

Secret of the Grain wins best cover for July from me.

I'm really excited to see The Red Shoes on Saturday-- it's the restored print so it'll give me an indication of how good Criterion's disc will be.

I can't wait to see the transfer of THE RED SHOES. I know screen captures at DVDbeaver.com looks good for the UK release of the film. I would bet the Criterion will look just as good if not better than the UK release.

I do own the UK for Black Narcissus, and it looks decent and really does outshine the old DVD release but will be curious to buy the Criterion release BOTH Day one purchases no questions asked.

Also excited about this extra on the RED SHOES release * Introductory restoration demonstration with Scorsese

if there's 1 thing i know about Criterion collectors, it's that they're passionate about films (as can be seen about Godard discussion in the last few pages).

that's why i ask why people think those releases are great in their own words. even if i don't think they are, it's still great for people to exercise what they like about these releases on hi-def

and yesh absolutely i'm lazy!!!! hahahaah

Obviously, everyone may not agree that they are all "great" films, but both the Powell&Pressburger films are heralded as "classics" for the most part. They both have amazingly shot cinematography with the use of Technicolor. Rent them if you haven't seen them and then decide if they're considered "great" by your standards. What the critics say and what every other person in the world considers "great" is not always one in the same.

I'm just not sure what there is to explain if you haven't seen any of the films, yet. If you have seen them and don't consider them to be "great," then someone else could chime in and give you their counter-thoughts as to why each one is "great" in their opinion. Until then, though, I think the proposed statement of wanting an explanation is a bit lazy.

I passed on the UK release of Black Narcissus opting to wait for the Criterion so this is good news. Sadly I won't be getting anything from them until their releases are closer to $20 on Amazon, and with the way things have been going it looks like I might have to wait quite a bit longer than July.

Do people here really think The Red Shoes cover looks good?? I think it is horrible. Aside from the picture looking like from a horror movie, the typography for the title makes it even worse. This one looks almost as bad as "A Christmas Tale".

"Black Narcissus" looks a little bit better because the picture selection is better. But by the typography and the careless layout of the text I can almost swear it came from the same designer.

Just snagged a brand new copy of The Third Man BD at Borders. Used the coupon that was posted on this thread yesterday and got it for $24. I do own it already, but I couldn't just leave it sitting there. Especially at that price, I felt like I found a golden ticket.

I can't believe there are copies still floating around stores almost eight months later!

Just goes to show how tiny an audience (and market share) Criterion has to make do with in comparison to the majors...

Thats the plan, Thanks!

Watched Dillinger is Dead the other night, I love how you have no idea what is really going on until the end!

As for Blu-ray, Surprised that we are not getting 4 or 5 in July...

I've been fortunate over the years to find a lot of random OOP Criterions at the brick and mortar stores in my area of New York. I guess there aren't many Criterion collectors in Queens.

Criterion just simultaneously shipped three orders to me today. The April BD releases, the backordered StudioCanal OOPs, and Rushmore which had been on backorder for a while. My wallet took a hit today, but I did get my $50 gift certificate to soften the blow a bit. Now what to get?

I wouldn't be surprised. I'm sure Criterion can't continue that kind of output for blu-ray right now. Three to four titles per month is what I'd expect.
