Peculiar how Carl had the news before it was announced by Criterion in the usual manner.

Pre-ordered!

- Watched "Walkabout" on Blu and definitely a major improvement from the standard DVD. The only thing I just need to add for the family Criterion purchasers on here is that there is full frontal nudity and graphic hunting scenes (watched it with another person who couldn't stand the hunting scenes - so if you're sensitive to that, there are quite a bit of hunting and dead animal scenes). Really enjoyed the David Gulpilil documentary.

- Oshima's Outlaw Sixties - I'm really enjoying this one. I've read that this is the first widescreen release via Criterin's Eclipse Series but overall was pleased with the picture quality of "Pleasures of the Flesh" which really held up well. Would have been nice to see these on BD but oh well, I'm hoping for the Youth Trilogy on Blu. Next up "Violence at Noon".

- Charles Taylor from the NYTimes wrote on May 2nd: Criterion continues its season of releases on Aug. 10 with a collection of Josef von Sternberg silents, including “The Last Command” and “Underworld.” This is great news as Criterion is now following MoC and Kino's lead of releasing more silent films. As for von Sternberg, I only have the Criterion release for "The Scarlet Empress" and both Kino releases for "The Blue Angel" but definitely would love to increase my collection of his films.

That would be awesome but not sure if Starz/Anchor Bay wants to release the rights to the Herzog/Kinski set. I did end up buying it from deepdiscount last week which was on sale for $15 (which is a great price, it might still be on sale).

Oh and Chelsea Girls. But Paul Morrissey is mostly the director.

We need Criterion to release Chelsea Girls. Someone facebook it please. I don't use those stupid things.
Done

What is not to like?

Oh and I hope the von Sternberg's silents are not in an Eclipse (with them saying "collection of"). I hope they mean a spine # collection that could be on blu. But if they are not on blu, I will accept the eclipse.

Thanks so much again kndy for doing that.

Edit: I see where the guy responded to your Warhol question, and I believe they can license titles out. Says so on the Warhol Museum website. I found it, it says, "The museum also considers requests for licensing." Why wouldn't they consider Criterion?

Russian Ambassador from Dr.Strangelove: our source was the New York Times

I don't think those dates are set in stone yet

As for the Warhols--- those seem like something which be released in an Eclipse set.

I would think if they ever release Chelsea Girls it would be a spine #. It's one of Warhol's most commercial of films and runs 210 mins. The movie runs in a split screen, where 2 things are going on at once at all times. I don't think they would put it in with his other films in a Eclipse line. It stands on it's own. Plus it was co-directed with Paul Morrissey, so it would be hard to include it with a Warhol-only Eclipse.

Wonder what the chances are of Criterion releasing Hausu on Blu-ray along with DVD? Will be buying either way, but would love to see it on Blu-ray.

Well since it seems Hausu is the second coming of Seven Samurai, I would take it that it will go blu.

I'd venture to say few on this board have seen Hausu and are going on buzz. I've seen Hausu at the art house. It's a fun film. Plenty of laughs, odd horror elements and generally just a good time. I'm not sure if it's a great film (yet) but it's fun and entertaining.

I saw it in theaters, and own the MoC dvd. I love it and cannot wait for Criterion to release it on blu!

The "buzz" on this board has led me to discover an incredible smorgasboard of previously unknown (to me) movies. In fact, I have bought more DVDs lately than blus, thanks to Criterion. A few of my (non blu-ray) favorites;

The Night Porter
Fires on the Plain
Breathless
Ran

and I just finished watching The Passion of Joan of Arc. What a fantastic movie; I'm at a loss to describe the impact it had on me.

Great stuff...
sorry for the late reply LOL...

thats a good idea!

I loved pierrot le fou as well...I guess thats the kinda film either you like or dont like.

I just found a region free import of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and ordered it. Has anyone else seen this or own it? If so, what's the quality like? Love that movie, can't believe there's not a US version available.

Also, did anyone notice that Seven Samurai is available for Pre-Order on Amazon? There's no date, just says 2010. Seems odd that it would be up on there before Criterion made a proper announcement. Btw, it's priced at $34.99.
