I just watched Hunger for the first time, all I have to say is wow. What an amazing movie. McQueen did an amazing job directing this film. I will definitely buy this film very soon.

I watched Part One of Che last night. I must say that is powerful little film Soderbergh has put together. I can see why Del Toro held onto the rights until the situation was perfect. I'll have to wait until next weekend to watch Part Two but I can't wait!

Five movies from Japanese director Nagisa Oshima

Yes, it was announced 3 months ago from Criterion along with the other May releases. It comes out tomorrow. Both B&N & Amazon have had some good deals on this set, as well. My pre-order from B&N is just over $30 and Amazon's price was $33.99 just a few days ago, but it's over $50 right now.

Really? I thought the film could have been so much better. Putting a film together about a 20th century icon and a hero of mine should have been an easy thing to do. Del Toro did a great job acting but the script could have been much better.

I watched WALKABOUT Saturday evening, and it was mty first time ever seeing it. I had many other Roeg films in my collection Bad Timing, Don't Look Now, Man Who Fell to Earth, and Performance.

The image quality was really good some shots have more grain than others and you can tell it was just the stock used etc.

It was nice to see a film that included a child (the boy played by Roeg's son) who wan't annoying.

Make me have hope that Criterion can release Don't Look Now from Paramount, although I would want a Blu release for this film for sure.

That was actually the hard part. Funding. Let's just lists the things that is "wrong" in this film for the "average American" (not incuding myself because I too like Che and this film):

1. In a foreign language. Strike 1.

2. The subject, being a "villain" to the U.S. and citizens eat that up. Strike 2.

3. Protesters of this film, due again to the "knowledge" of what the U.S. has gave them to hate. Strike 3.

4. Filming locations. Strike 4.

5. Running time, over the 1 hour 30 min mark of the "average" person's taste. Strike 5.

Those are good points. Though I always assumed this film would fare better in South America and European cinemas than in the U.S.

And as far as Che goes I always liked The Motorcycle Diaries far more.

I think it did do better in other places, but it is still an American movie, with an American director, an American actor, but with a French production. It was financed without any U.S. money, and he had to go to other places for funding. The French production, Wild Bunch, gave 75% of the budget.

So being an American director and everyone in your own country turned their backs on you for making this movie, it would be hard to make this movie.

I wish this film did do better here, because I would of loved a 3rd part.

That's probably part of it. I believe The Motorcycle Diaries was Brazilian directed with a mostly South American team. That film was pretty well received in the U.S. by critics and did reasonably well on DVD. Of course that film is about Che's pre-Revolutionary days. Not as much faux controversy as showing him actively involved in overthrowing the far-right U.S. backed dictatorship of Cuba.

I absolutely loved the cinematography/direction, as well as Del Toro's performance. I think the challenge is to accept the premise of the script as a subjective diary/journal piece, from Che's perspective. Being open-minded helps, but that also means being open-minded to him being a "villain" as well as his image in the film.

Ok. I was listing funding issues, not that I hated the movie. I am well educated (I like to think) on Guevara and have little to no problem with the issue. The "direction" had nothing to do with why the rest of America hated this movie from the get go.

Let's just leave the talking points to the film itself........ independent of the politics behind it, or if you think Guevara is a "swell fella" or not.....
