I wonder if anyone on here has watched more episodes of the tv show "Soul Train" than I have? I watched that one quite a bit as a kid. I know there are some older folks on here, as well, so maybe they did, as well. Beta and I are roughly the same age, so I'm expecting him to have a few episodes of "Soul Train" under his belt, too.

I am probably one of the "older" people on the forum. I watched a lot of Soul Train. As good as it was, it was pale compared to "David Kirshner's rock concert" or the "midnight special."

Brokeback Mountain is a beautiful movie, and was one of my first Blu ray purchases. But then I'm just a grown up who isn't trying to prove who not gay I am.

The only thing I do when I read someone repeatedly describing themselves and their taste in movies as "dangerous" is roll my eyes and skip the rest of their post.

I love Bloodrayne, and if aliens find it in a hundred years they will probably hail it as some dadaistic masterpiece, just for the Billy Zane close ups alone.

Guilty pleasures? I love Doomsday, Death Race, and Galaxy Quest, to name just a few on the spur of the moment. If it contains senseless violence or off-beat humor I'll probably enjoy it.

OK. I knew I'd remember another one. Got to put Poultrygeist up there at the top.

There are quite a few REALLY bad movies I've enjoyed watching. Movies that are just so gawd aweful they are funny. Uwe Boll films, Freddy Got Fingered and Gigli are a few of them.

Please tell me you aren't referring to the film I'm thinking of with Rhona Mitra in it. Or were you kidding about hoping to see it on Criterion?

Nobody mentioned the obvious guilty pleasure: porn.

That's the Doomsday I was referring to, although I'm not sure it is the one he was talking about, since I already have it on blu-ray.

This is completely different than the question presented by Horseflesh......

My answer is
[Show spoiler] Norbit
yep.... watched it twice in 2 days in a hotel...... Don't own it on any format though

He put the subtitles in Navajo English.

Quote:
The legendary French Film director Jean-Luc Godard, whose latest work, Film Socialisme, is showing at Cannes this week, has decided to run its subtitles in "Navajo English" as in old Westerns where the Native Americans spoke in choppy phrases. Because the drama takes place on a cruise ship where no one speaks the same language, Godard has fashioned his subtitles concisely to say the least. If a character is saying "give me your watch", the subtitle will read "You, me, watch."
Reviews have been mixed and that is what I like. I didn't want critics to suck up to him since it could be his last. I can't wait to see it.

There aren't really any films I enjoy that I'm ashamed of liking, except maybe 17 Again. Films like Ninja Assassin are fun to watch and I can admit it.

There's a rumor that apparently Terrence Malick is a huge fan of Ben Stiller's Zoolander.

Its actually a blind buy

I know enough of the movie, to know that I'm gonna like it,

even if I dont, I think there is lots I can learn from it.

And that means......... we should listen to Mark Kermode for our movie recommendations? He himself said he didn't understand the film, so he bashed it instead. Smart. Bash things you don't understand. Easy way out. Hey that sounds like other issues in the world.

Godard's films since the 70's has been bashed by critics, so why would that change? Also I don't think Godard put Navajo English subtitles in so you can understand it better.

Just watched M tonight, as it arrived in the mail this afternoon. WOW, what a great looking 79 year old film!!! I am amazed at how clear it looked on my television. When it was over, I switched on the English version found under the Supplements menu, and you can tell how much work was done for the original French version to get it all cleaned up.

I am impressed...and that is why I will continue to blind buy Criterion titles. You know, without a doubt, that you're getting a quality product!!

I would recommend the following :

The Last Emperor : One of the most beautiful & grandest biopics about a forgotten emperor.

Bottle Rocket : I am a Wes Anderson fan, so I may be biased, but his characters are innocent losers who go through the film to realise who they really are - it gets me each time. Also, his quirky sense of humor makes it better.

El Norte - I would recommend you rent before you buy. Especially if you are interested to learn about illegal immigrants & the struggles they go through to get here.

Benjamin Button - David Fincher - Excellent transfer - says it all.

Monsoon Wedding - I consider this film textbook material for character development. there are too many characters who play an important role - and none of them are left behind in progression. Also, the BD includes some of the rarest short films of mira nair, those shorts itself are worth a purchase - I am gonna go as far to say; those shorts deserve their own separate release.

Gomorrah - Ultra realistic gritty documentary style drama about a mafia group and there influence that seeps the common society in Italy. The film is based on a novel, which is written in first person. The film, instead of having voice overs of descriptions (as in the novel) makes the camera - the eyes of the author. So what you see, goes down as a journal in the novel.

CHE - 5 hour docu-drama, it is very intense in the first part & and gets low key & personal in the second half. It is should be credited for its plain journalism approach, as CHE is either loved or hated - the film chooses not to portay him in neither lights.
