Anyone else disappointed that Charade did not get any more special features for blu?
Also why is TTRL $10 dollars more on blu....criterion says on their FAQ that they would be taking price out of the equation and make the DVD and Blu releases the same price. This is also the same for the Seventh Seal. I am just curious about it. One more thing, is Criterion losing money on all blus? Since they are the same price as DVD, and Criterion said in that New York Q&A video a few pages back that blu costs 7-8 times as much to make for them then regular DVD. And I would be suprised if Criterion is selling more blus then DVDs at this point. Just because Criterion is such a niche market as it is, and then adding blu into that, the numbers have to be pretty damn low, to low to turn a profit if they really cost 7-8 times as much. |

I think there are pricing errors for both "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" and "The Thin Red Line" on their site right now since they recycle the templates for their pages. CC |

As for the comment on selling more than DVD's, the truth is if you visit a lot of Criterion forums, there are many who have not adopted Blu-ray nor do they feel like doing it right now and if they are moving on, they talk about moving on towards Netflix digital streaming. The sales are great for us who have moved on to Blu but I think the prices are low in hopes for those to jump to Blu-ray. |

Having worked in retail the better part of ten years, those sales (50% off, bogo and such) don't really hurt the makers of the product. if anyone hurts from it, its the store. once a store has obtained the items from, lets say criterion, thats it. they have already bought all of those copies from them and now its, say B&N's, job to sell them. when discounts are offered, its taking away from that store's own revenue, not the company providing the product. After initial orders, now thats where something could come into play. based on how well something sells or doesn't sell would warrant whether or not to obtain more stock of said product. Seeing as how B&N not only have specifici criterion sales, but also nearly everyone has its own criterion section, that would lead me to believe there is some backscratching involved. perhaps criterion cuts them a lower wholesale rate and in return get more publicity. or maybe there isn't any comradery and whomever runs barnes and noble is just a really big fan. either way, whenever you are saving money on something in a store, if its hurting anyone, its hurting who you bought it from.

And the new prices are correct for Thin Red Line and Mr. Lawrence. At least the sell sheet and press release indicate the lower prices for the DVDs. |

Replacement cases all arrived in the mail today. Woot. They arrive fast when they actually recieve your Paypal payment lol. I imagine Pierrot le Fou will arrive by Saturday or Monday at the latest if they are this fast, since it shipped out today.
In other news, I've been going through a Criterion marathon of sorts. Just watched Vivre sa Vie this afternoon. Some Criterion films make me think, some I enjoy. But some just knock me flat on my ass and leave me saying "WOW! That was a great movie!" Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Ran, Kagemusha, Sanjuro, M, 8 1/2, The Seventh Seal, Hunger, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Third Man, and now, Vivre Sa Vie. This film just blew me away. One thing I noticed in particular was just how amazing of an actress Ann Karina is. But also, just the visual aspects of the film were simply stunning. I don't know if anyone else has noticed or mentioned this before, but I feel like Tarantino, and to a lesser extent, Scorsese, both drew a lot of influence from Godard's films. Vivre sa Vie felt a lot like Tarantino's earlier films, Jackie Brown in particular. The style, structure, dialogue, etc. But that is to the credit of Godard, who clearly kind of defined this way of filmmaking. I could go on and on about how I loved every single aspect of this film, but that would get boring. In short, this is just one hell of a film. I can't wait to watch Pierrot le Fou when my copy arrives, and watch more Godard films in general. |

Perhaps their early 50-50 ish dvd to blu ratio has dropped some? Or perhaps some blu-ray licensing constraints (e.g., the difference between getting rights to sell on blu-ray and dvd vs just getting the rights for dvd only). Factor in anticipated sales somehow, and maybe they just have to charge more to cover added expenses for these two. Maybe why some titles are dvd only in spite of how ready they are for blu too. ...Just guessing. Last edited by fdm; 06-18-2010 at 12:07 AM. |

Tarantino's production company, named A BAND APART, after Godard's film Bande á part or known in English as Band of Outsiders Pulp Fiction drew from Band of Outsiders and Vivre sa vie. Mia Wallace is a play on Anna Karina. The moment of silence restaurant scene in Band of Outsiders and the "silence" discussion at the Jack Rabbit Slims in Pulp Fiction. Then you can also say both films have famous dance scenes after that. |
