Which is a better film "Che" or "Motorcycle Diaries"? I know that "Che" looks incredible but in terms of storyline, which one is better?

That's kind of a hard comparison to make, seeing as how both films tackle different parts and aspects of Che's life. "Che" pt one switches back and forth from Che working his way up the ranks of the revolution along with scenes of him addressing the UN after the revolution was successful and shows Guevara living on such a high note of his life, whereas Pt. two focuses on his last days and feels much more personal and depicts Che's power and esteem crumble all around him. "Motorcycle Diaries" depicts a much younger Guevara and sort of shows him establishing the man he would one day become. It's not a bad film, in my opinion, but I vastly prefer "Che". If, however, you are interested in the man himself, I would say go for both.

In favor of some shameless self-promotion, here's a link to my review for "Che" http://criterionandthecaptain.blogsp...spine-496.html

As a pure film I would have to go with Motorcycle Diaries. It had an easier to digest screenplay, more likable characters, and an easier to discern theme that really came together at the end.

Che is probably the superior selection from a pure film standpoint but it is a bit obtuse and hard to get into if you don't have prior knowledge of the man and his legend (both good and bad). Even with a good idea about him and his /Cuba's history I still found myself being heavily enlightened by the commentary tracks found on part one and two that really serve as an in depth fill in to the screen action...the segments at the end of part two where he talks about Che's assassin swearing that almost as soon as he was dead he started coughing and developed asthma which Che suffered from for most of his life was eerie to say the least...

Edit- Totally shameless.

Some timeline corrections: Criterion did NOT know they would be going Blu in mid-2007, which is when the Paramount deal that included the von Sternberg silents was made. Criterion didn't decide to go Blu until 2008, which was after Warner effectively ended the format war in January 2008. Criterion made a public announcement about going Blu in May 2008, and their first titles came out in November 2008.

Same exact thing happened to me. I ordered Vivre sa vie, Gomorrah and the Yojimbo/Sanjuro boxset yesterday. The first two are shipping tomorrow, but Yojimbo/Sanjuro isn't shipping til August 2nd. Probably backordered due to the sale.

Oh...when you ordered did it say the items were available in 24 hrs. or 1-2 weeks. I noticed some of the Blu-rays had 1-2 weeks and didn't want it holding up my order, so didn't order those Blu-rays (with the 1-2 weeks).

No, when I made the order it said all three were scheduled to ship on the 15th (today). Then I got a "scheduled to ship" e-mail and it said Yojimbo/Sanjuro was shipping August 2nd. They didn't send me anything else regarding why it's happening.

Yes we should. My main problem is when I wish to truly own a movie for multiple viewings and I get it at a very low price, like a sale, I can't help it and got to buy it even on DVD. I have no way of knowing when if ever the Blu-ray will be available. I can be patient but a sale make's it so very difficult not to get the movie

Has anyone else had trouble with Days of Heaven? The disc will not work with my standalone Sony player. The player has the most recent firmware updates, but no go.

At first, I thought it was the disc, because my standalone player came up with the message "This disc will not operate." But then I put it in my PS3 and it worked fine. Should I take it back and see if I have better luck with another copy of the movie? Or is this a known issue I'm not aware of?

Question for all you Kurosawa fanboys out there (or anyone else with an opinion on the subject). I've never seen one of his movies before (hard to believe, I know), not even Seven Samurai. I just ordered the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set due to the 50% off sale and a recommendation from a friend.

Other than Seven Samurai (which I might as well just wait for the Blu to watch), what are some of his better (best?) films? What's a good film to start with? Are Yojimbo/Sanjuro representative of all his work, or would I be better off starting with something else? If someone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated

I would say Hidden Fortress but it's not on Blu-ray however.

Honestly, all of his samurai films are kind of similar. Seven Samurai and Kagemusha being my favorites, with RAN a close second. For his non-samurai films, Ikiru is maybe his greatest achievement, as well as Red Beard and High & Low.

And this is a problem how ?

Most DVD's are not that expensive and if it's a movie I like I refuse to limit myself just because it's not on blu. Of course I prefer blu, but I watch movies; not formats. Just my opinion.

Edit: An example would be Night of the Hunter. I currently have it on DVD. If it is announced today as coming to Blu, I will immediately pre-order it.

I think it would be humorous (at least to me) to put up a poll in the Movie/Discussion section, for which one is better...... run it for a month, and then see the results......

THEN, a year later or whenever Motorcycle Diaries gets released on Blu-ray (or even announced for that matter) put the poll back up, starting from scratch, as if you had no realization that the previous poll ever existed.....

How much you wanna bet that members on this forum would vote "Che" to be the better one now..... and "Motorcycle Diaries" the better one if it were coming out in... say... a week.

It's part of the "The Dark Knight is the greatest film of all time" phenomena.......

Look at how many people say "Let The Right One In" is the best vampire movie..... ha... I think it's a great film, but much like "Pan's Labyrinth" they are really the first foreign movies they have been exposed to.......

Oh well, getting people excited about film, regardless of how, is a good thing I guess......

High and Low is most likely his best non-samurai film. 10/10.
