I got a reply back from the "Pygmalion" seller. Once I send the movie back, she will issue a full refund. The DVD maker states on the back of the case, "Criterion Collection presents Pygmalion in a beautifully restored digital transfer." The Criterion logo is no where to be found on the DVD case. This leads me to believe, that this is in fact a phony. Am I wrong on this? I am not aware of Criterion licensing their work in Hong Kong. The internet address on the back is not Criterion's, but trboy.com, which seems to be an invalid url.

Edited to add: I went ahead and paid a little more by buying directly from Amazon. At least I know I will be getting a legit copy of an OOP Criterion release this time.

I checked the ISBN numbers and the DVD from Amazon market place seller does not match.

Hopefully, my experience will help someone else from getting a fake Criterion.

Picked up the OOP editions of Red Shoes and Black Orpheus today, along with Battle for Algiers, Naked Lunch, and I Am Curious. All for $82 after tax. Not bad...
Also, the new Blus of Red Shoes and Black Narcissus came in the mail today (which is unusally late for them to arrive, I generally get them the monday of release week, oh well)
Now all I need is time to watch everything. :sigh:

I mentioned to the sales woman at one of my B&N the other day that the mark-up on Criterions must be huge for B&N to make money on this sale. She tried telling me that the mark-up is incredibly small and that they don't make money off their DVD sales. I was like "sure you don't, just like you don't make money from the coffee you sale for $3 a cup". She didn't seem to get it, so I just let it go.
I'd say the numbers would be quite impressive.

Not necessarily...I work at Best Buy and companies like Apple and Sony and other big names set the prices for their products. For example, we make about $1.50 on any iPod or iPad, even the most expensive one, which clocks in at over $800. Criterion discs have always been expensive because of the nature of their business. I would not be surprised if they set the prices and B&N makes very little off of the discs. Same goes for Starbucks...

So, is there any chance that Criterion will release 'Armageddon' on Blu-ray anytime in the near future? I wouldn't mind seeing them do the same for 'The Rock', as well.

I'm sure that was just a one-time deal, since they've been released on DVD by Disney after that, and also on Blu-ray. I don't know what a Criterion release would add to it, frankly.

Why did'nt Criterion add "Night and Fog" to the release of "Last Year At Marienbad" as an extra since it was the same director?

I just received The Last Emperor and Chungking Express, both in the cardboard cases. I don't think the original CC BDs were ever repackaged, so look forward to the cardboard for any of those original releases.

There's nothing different other then they come in a cardboard box

I never noticed that. I'll have to double check.

If you plan to get replacement cases. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and get any other title you plan to get that came in cardboard digipack case before ordering replacement cases since it will save you money. Its $10.00 for the first two cases and $2 for each other one after that.

I've ordered ever title that was released with the Digipack cases in the last three months. They all shipped in cardboard digipack cases.

Has anyone here ever recieved one of these titles not in a digipack cardboard case?
THE THIRD MAN
THE LAST EMPEROR
THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH
BOTTLE ROCKET
CHUNGKING EXPRESS
THE 400 BLOWS
THE LAST METRO
EL NORTE
LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD

Because "Night And Fog" was released many moons ago as a stand-alone DVD, and my guess is that Criterion's releasing structure usually doesn't involve adding a previous stand-alone release as part of a new release.

At the time "Night And Fog" was released in 2003, there's a pretty good chance that Criterion had no idea that they would one day get the chance to release "Last Year At Marienbad." Why didn't Criterion just go ahead and throw in a free copy of "Salesman" or "Gimme Shelter" along with every purchase of "Last Year At Marienbad," as well, right? They are by the same directors.

And why did Criterion choose to release both "Grey Gardens" and "The Beales of Grey Gardens" separately and in a box set together when they're both by the same directors? Why? Why? Why?

CC

Just to clarify, it's $2.50 - not $2 - for each additional case after the first two.

watched "Black Narcissus" last night;
it looks absolutely stunning--maybe the best of any 40's film yet imo.
the only think I noticed was fairly consistent mild color fluctuation I'm assuming is caused by the technicolor process.
other than that issue, this bd looks amazing.

They did it with "Bergman Island" on the "Seventh Seal" bd, didn't they ?
