Some of the documentaries in the special features were very fascinating as well (you have to wonder what goes on inside people's heads while making a film like this). Obviously, this film isn't for everybody, but I'd recommend it to people who don't mind being challenged to think by a film and not spoon fed ( ). People who take it at face value will probably think it's garbage, but there is more going on beneath the surface.

Now I'm thinking about checking out Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (available on BD in the UK). People seem to think The Decameron is the best, and The Canterbury Tales is not as successful. I'm not sure about The Arabian Nights, but according to the review on this site, it contains some fairly graphic violence. Are all three worthy?
Just couldn't help yourself, could you?

Now all you need to catch is "Sweet Movie" and "Fat Girl" from Criterion.

The film, aside from its real-life attachments, does an amazing job of conveying lust turned love turned obsession and how something so simple as an emotion/feeling can be one's own undoing. I'm now very excited to see more of Oshima's work.
I was so glad that In the Realm of the Senses actually got a Blu-ray release after so many awful DVD releases. The old region 1 DVD was one of the worst DVDs I'd ever seen (full frame, burned in subtitles that weren't timed properly, horrendous PQ, a quote from Madonna on the box ( ). To go from that to the Criterion BD was almost a shock.

I enjoyed Empire of Passion (only released on DVD, unfortunately). It's a kaidan (ghost story) that reminded me a bit of Hideo Nakata's Ring (which may have been influenced by it). There's a bit of nudity, but nothing as explicit as in ItRotS. It was better than I expected.

LOL I took a look at my case and sure enough you're right. Maybe they donated some money for the film or something.

I paid for a B&N membership only to realize the other day that my only local Barnes & Noble store doesn't carry DVD's. Awesome. Wasted $25 because they won't let me use it for online orders...

Don't you have a couple weeks to cancel your B&M membership?

Do you really? I thought you couldn't do that with memberships.

I can't speak firsthand, but based on the chatter from the B&N sale thread I get the distinct impression that you have a trial grace period. People were saying they signed up just for the sale and then canceled immediately afterwards.

Depends on how many you are planing to purchase. If you purchase 10-13 titles, the membership saving pays off its annual fee. Any more than above number you start saving $2-6 per title.

I would suggest making a list for the DVDs&BDs you want to purchase and call the nearest store that carries DVDs. They can put on reserve for the ones they have in stock and order the rest. Their order times are very quick usually 1-2 business days and you get a email+text msg confirmation when they arrive. This will save you from couple of trips

If you dont have The Red Shoes BD, its not available online anymore. Only luck is a nearby store has it in stock

I've seen it. I don't remember violence or sex, or punk rock either for that matter. It was really boring. Would not recommend a blind buy.

From a user over on criterionforum.org... in regards to "The Thin Red Line"...

Quote:
'Hi Jason

....

As you mentioned, we will be including deleted scenes from the film. However, we're not sure of the the total length of the deleted scenes yet as we're still in the midst of the editing process. And in response to your final question--there is no longer cut . . it is indeed a rumor.

....

Best,
Jon

Anyone have "The Exterminating Angel" ? If so, what are your thoughts on it? I watched the Criterion trailer. It reminds me of Rod Sterling's Twilight Zone series.

I'm a fan of any Buñuel film, so I don't think you're gonna hear anything but praise from me regarding "The Exterminating Angel" or any of his other films. If you don't get it now during the sale, though, you're definitely gonna regret it later.

I noticed my local B&N had a copy of it last night, when I was getting "The Testament of Dr. Mabuse." Thanks for the reply. I will see about getting it this week. By the way, did you notice any audio issues with the release?
