That really depends on your taste. For me, "Kind Hearts and Coronets" because I felt that Alec Guinness was wonderful in the film, esp. him playing eight different roles.

And I would say either Diary of a Chambermaid or The Milky Way. Can't go wrong with Bunuel.

Here's the Kurosawa box, for those interested:

And here's the book that lays on top of the discs:

I meant to get a photo of one of the individual cases opened, but my camera's battery died. I'll put the battery in the charger and take one and post it later on this morning.

It's funny, people seem keen to venerate Guinness for playing eight different "roles", when really, I found a lot more to enjoy in Dennis Price's mischievously murderous single character. What many people tend to overlook about the Guinness role, in my opinion, is that while it is undoubtedly a great feat of varied performances,
[Show spoiler]some of them are only seen for a few minutes at most, and mostly for the practical purpose of being murdered. I'm not saying that Guinness' job was easier than we might think, but with the minor characters, it often seems that it's just Guinness doing a straight imitation almost on-the-fly, as if someone said to him: "Show me an elderly clergyman fond of drink" Or: "Show me a proud, rambling war veteran" Or: "Show me a randy, haughty rich man" and Guinness does. Obviously, Henry was a fuller role, and I guess I was expecting more "interaction" between the Guinness victims, with quick-cut POV shots of three/four characters in one room or what have you. I was simply surprised that the story so often eliminated one Guinness role at a time in the fashion it did
.

I ended up ordering both. Diary of a Chambermaid was $26.99, at Amazon, and I picked up The Milky Way for $19.97, along with a blu-ray purchase in order to get free shipping, from DVD Empire.

I thought about Kind Hearts and Coronets, but it had a rather vague shipping date.

Oh, and thanks for the recommendations kndy and CG.

This box is so nice and constantly tempts be, but with three of them already on blu, and another on the way, I feel like all of the non-eclipse ones will make it on blu in no time at all. For a die hard Kurosawa fan, it seems like a must have. I do, however, think its a wonderful package.

what has happened to the behind the scenes/extras for Criterion releases?

it actually doesn't affect me personally. i'm of the mind that film magic shouldn't be "discussed" cause it ruins the suspension of belief. but i know people luv 'extras'.
I think it's hard to make this assertion when they're releasing films like Close-up that have a feature length film as an extra.

Even though it's a CC DVD, Jim Jarmuch's "Stranger Than Paradise" has the full legnth debut "Permanent Vacation" as an extra as well.

I agree, plus people should remember that "Ride With The Devil" is just shy of being a 2.5 hour film, and more supplements would've just hampered the video presentation. And the feasibility to make this particular release 2 discs isn't there, either, just for more supplements. I'm sure Criterion knew that this release wasn't going to be a tent pole for the collection, which is why we got what we got (director's cut, 2 commentaries, video interview, and booklet)... which I think is sufficient enough.

I mean... look at the upcoming blu-ray release of "Charade"... the blu-ray is actually losing one of the original DVD supplements and, as of right now, no other "new" supplements have been posted on Criterion's site for the film. So, "Charade" is looking to be one of the more expensive releases with few supplements.

From Criterion's site...

Quote:
• Restored high-definition digital transfer (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
• Audio commentary featuring Stanley Donen and screenwriter Peter Stone
The Films of Stanley Donen: A selected filmography, with an introduction by Donen biographer Stephen M. Silverman (DVD edition only)
• Original theatrical trailer
• English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired
• PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film historian Bruce Eder
It's not much, but... it's still being left off the blu-ray. The disc never had much in the way of supplements anyway. So, that basically leaves you with 1 commentary, trailer, and booklet.

Maybe they lost the rights to the extra, who knows, oh well, still a damn good film IMO. I will get it when it comes to blu. Here's another one, the Gimme Shelter blu does not have the restoration demo that the DVD had. Plus with M you get the shorter english version as an added bonus. I'M VERY HAPPY WITH CC's BLU's (and DVD's too!)

I save all the 'smell' for the guests... I'm very generous that way.

I can take some pictures of the insides of the cases if anyone is 'that' curious about it...... I sadly haven't watched any of them yet, and with the arrival of my Neil Young Archives..... I'm gonna be busy for awhile

There's now a photo on Criterion's Facebook page of "Night Of The Hunter" being worked on. So, maybe someone else can post it since I'm at work.
