i loved it , but a lot of people get turned off because it is pretty violent and sexually explicit ,,,,, theres a lot of context and hidden meanings to the film it is definitely worth a watch |

Like johndoyle123 says... some explicit stuff, sexual penetration shown with porn stand-ins for Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, downward spiraling mental stability, etc. Most people seem to have walked away from the film with no care at all. I found it to be emotionally insane with some "WTF" moments that I thought were cool. Then again, I have family viewings of "Salo" during the holidays so don't take my word for it. ![]() CC |

Although they are "silent" films, if there is no sound, then it's going to be a lot tougher to get through the film than it would be were you watching a proper presentation. I'd suggest trying to watch it again with a soundtrack, as pretty much all silent movies were meant to have a musical accompaniment. That's part of the experience. (Edit: although I've seen a silent or two (Gance's Napolean come to mind), where the music was overdone and drove me a little nuts in spite of how good the film was).
(And was the PQ any good with the version you saw? Criterion's was pretty good.) Last edited by fdm; 08-20-2010 at 04:38 PM. |

This year's ATP New York includes the following films presented by Criterion that are not yet in the collection:
Ne change rien (Pedro Costa, 2009) The Killing (Stanley Kubrick, 1956) Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich, 1955) Something Wild (Jonathan Demme, 1986) I guess we can expect these in 2011. ![]() Last edited by rezpekt; 08-20-2010 at 06:40 PM. |

Yikes...that blows. The music contributes to the enjoyment of a silent film. I know that the StudioCanal Renoir set has no music but I can't fathom watching a silent film especially "Passion of Joan of Arc" let alone a longer film like "Intolerance" without a musical soundtrack.

Something Wild would be an interesting choice. I watched it for the first time ever on DVD last year. Speaking of Demme films and MGM etc... I think it would be the tops if Criterion could issue the silence of the lambs mainly because the current BD release just does NOT look right at all. Way too clean looking. All you have to do is check out the HD trailer on the BD and that is how the film should look. The trailer looked like film the movie looked like... well just not right. |

I think that both films, especially Blade Runner, are very important films. Blade Runner was a LOW BUDGET production, that almost didn't get made a number of times. If it weren't for securing $21.5 million in financing through a three way deal between The Ladd Company (through Warner Bros.), the Hong Kong-based producer Sir Run Run Shaw, and Tandem Productions, the film would probably never had been made. Producer Michael Deeley can be thanked for that. The fact that they were able to snare Syd Mead and Jordan Cronenweth was just icing on the cake. |

I have the digipack release of Last Year at Marienbad. Criteron is still offering the replacement case but unfortunately Criteron won't ship overseas (Australia). I believe they charge $5 per case with free shipping to anywhere in the US. Would anyone here be able to help me out?
