The Leopard blu is like this upcoming Breathless, if you have that. It is like the thick digi's of the dvd releases that people love so much like on Pandora's Box, Breathless, Two-Lane Blacktop, etc.
Most people probably do anyway. Mostly just a pain in the ass to me.

I do atleast think they should have a standardized size on their digi-releases. The Brakhage set is noticeably shorter than The Leopard, and even the Che and Monterey Pop sets. Nitpicking, of course, but hey -- that's all that's left with Criterion. (:

On the tragic news of the passing of Japanese animation filmmaker Satoshi Kon, I hope Criterion would manage to get the rights to and release any of his work. Only one of his movies has come out on Blu-ray in the US.

Perfect Blue is the best-known, but in my opinion Millennium Actress is much more ambitious and accomplished, both stylistically and narratively, and also a heartfelt love letter to cinema in general and to classic Japanese movies in particular.

Well...time to take advantage of my fellow CC Discussioneers...

As I will probably purchase "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence"...I want to take advantage of what "people in the know" suggest to be "good" films to start with.

Now that I am days away from getting my first region free player...I want to find good films (in this case...by Ozu) to check out that are "region-locked"...

Thanks Guys!

So is thread going to move from discussing packaging to a discussion of the films themselves?

I'd be willing to look into MoC and/or BFI releases that are region locked...whether they're DVD or BD.

dvdbeaver has looked at several of the Ozu titles that made it to blu-ray, as has this site. I've watched some of the Criterion DVDs (Good Morning, Tokyo Story, Floating Weeds, Early Summer), haven't run across anything disagreeable. Quite the opposite, actually.

Of those, I'd suggest Tokyo Story, and if you don't want to wait for a Criterion blu-ray, go for the bfi. Seems like as good a place to start as any.

(Think I'll check out another Ozu myself this weekend: Late Spring it is.)

You want to know Osima films to start with? Empire of Passion or that Eclipse set is f'n great.

Now the last part of your post you said, Ozu. Well others could help you more with that, as I seen some Ozu, but I haven't "Godarded" him.

In addition to Ozu's films, you should take a look at Pier Paolo Pasolini's Trilogy of Life:

The Decameron:

The Canterbury Tales:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-C...-Blu-ray/4422/

Arabian Nights:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Arabi...y/4423/#Review

I always recommend Fellini's Casanova, but this disc has proven to be very difficult to obtain in recent months:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Il-Ca...-Blu-ray/3728/

Tony Richardson's The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is also a fantastic package:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-L...-Blu-ray/1659/

Karel Reisz's gritty British New Wave classic Saturday Night and Sunday Morning also comes highly recommended:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Satur...y/3281/#Review

Luis Bunuel's Belle de jour should find a spot in your library:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Belle...-Blu-ray/5819/

Anthony Minghella's Breaking and Entering is also one of my favorite BDs:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Break...y/2563/#Review

Brief Encounter is yet to be released in North America as well:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Brief...y/3243/#Review

I strongly recommend this recent Oscar winner as well:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Depar...y/9908/#Review

David Lynch's Inland Empire is a film that has divided audiences, but I think that it is absolutely incredible:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Inlan.../10205/#Review

La haine, one of the most influential contemporary French films (together with Ma 6-T va crack-er, it started the banlieue genre)
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/La-Ha...y/5805/#Review

Another very influential French film:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/La-pl.../11140/#Review

Mesrine -- 1 & 2
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Mesri...y/6625/#Review

Wong Kar-Wai's My Blueberry Nights, a beautiful, sensual film:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/My-Bl...y/3271/#Review

Picnic at Hanging Rock: So far, the Release of the Year for me!
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Picni.../11645/#Review

Profound Desires of the Gods - Imamura's film is exclusive to Blu-ray:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Profo...y/9926/#Review

French director Albert Lamorisse's Le ballon rouge is a Region-Free release, but it is one of the treasures in my collection. You should have it as well
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-R...y/6245/#Review

The Red Road, a great contemporary drama, winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, by a director who seems to be following Ken Loach's steps:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Red-R...y/7939/#Review

Shane Meadow's best film:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/This-...-Blu-ray/1725/

Elite Squad, winner of Golden Bear at the Berlinale. Very controversial film:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Elite...y/2650/#Review

etc....

And if you are interested in SDVDs, you should probably PM me so that we do not clutter this thread

With Criterion asking people on facebook (so facebook people are the deciding factor in what films we will get) what Russia films (other than Tarkovsky) would you want to see in the collection (and of course half of the people keep putting Tarkovsky. Ah, Facebook!),

it had me thinking. Does anyone know who has the rights to Eisenstein's silent October?

I have the rights... but, I didn't wanna say anything just yet.

That got me to thinking, though... sometimes I have the wrongs, as well.

I have the rights over your rights. So, any deal over your rights has to be with me first.

I should make a facebook account and answer this "What Russia Films would you like?" question the right way ............."We could use more Wes Anderson!"

I think it might be a joke though. Maybe Facebook talkin' jive?
