I do atleast think they should have a standardized size on their digi-releases. The Brakhage set is noticeably shorter than The Leopard, and even the Che and Monterey Pop sets. Nitpicking, of course, but hey -- that's all that's left with Criterion. (:

On the tragic news of the passing of Japanese animation filmmaker Satoshi Kon, I hope Criterion would manage to get the rights to and release any of his work. Only one of his movies has come out on Blu-ray in the US.
Perfect Blue is the best-known, but in my opinion Millennium Actress is much more ambitious and accomplished, both stylistically and narratively, and also a heartfelt love letter to cinema in general and to classic Japanese movies in particular. ![]() Ring a bell? |

Well...time to take advantage of my fellow CC Discussioneers...
As I will probably purchase "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence"...I want to take advantage of what "people in the know" suggest to be "good" films to start with. Now that I am days away from getting my first region free player...I want to find good films (in this case...by Ozu) to check out that are "region-locked"... Thanks Guys! ![]() |

Of those, I'd suggest Tokyo Story, and if you don't want to wait for a Criterion blu-ray, go for the bfi. Seems like as good a place to start as any. (Think I'll check out another Ozu myself this weekend: Late Spring it is.) Last edited by fdm; 08-27-2010 at 05:30 PM. |

Now the last part of your post you said, Ozu. Well others could help you more with that, as I seen some Ozu, but I haven't "Godarded" him. ![]() |

With Criterion asking people on facebook (so facebook people are the deciding factor in what films we will get) what Russia films (other than Tarkovsky) would you want to see in the collection (and of course half of the people keep putting Tarkovsky. Ah, Facebook!),
it had me thinking. Does anyone know who has the rights to Eisenstein's silent October? Last edited by SpiderBaby; 08-27-2010 at 07:46 PM. |
