I would check the 2 in the collection first (Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein) to get an idea because the other ones are really different. Those 2 are out of print for Criterion, but there are other versions you can find that has better transfers too. The other ones have Warhol's "Superstars" as the cast so it would be better to watch the 2 horror films first.

I am going to get off here for the night (2:30 A.M. here lol), so talk to ya tomorrow/later today .

I've missed a lot of the 2009 movies, but my list would look like this (I had to look on Wikipedia to see what the list of '09 American movies were http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._films_of_2009 ):

Up
District 9
Inglorious Basterds
Watchmen
Zombieland

(I guess I'm fairly mainstream)

It's cool. All of my list (maybe except for Bad Lieutenant and Two Lovers) were big mainstream films.

Thanks for posting your list. Hope others post. When I get up in the morning, I'll check em out.

Nice, just checked Netflix and both of those are available on Instant, so I'll definitely give em a look in the next week or so. I checked the description, and they both sound pretty interesting. There's also a bunch of his other stuff available Instantly (Flesh, Trash, Women in Revolt, Heat, mixed Blood), a lot of Warhol mention, so that's probably what you are referring to.

My five favorite AMERICAN films of 09' would probably be:

1. Inglorious Basterds
2. (500) Days of Summer
3. Up In The Air
4. Drag Me To Hell
5. Up

BUT..............

My five favorite films of 09' would probably look something more like this.....

1. Inglorious Basterds
2. Antichrist
3. (500) Days of Summer
4. The White Ribbon
5. Broken Embraces

Come to think of it..... My list is a bit of a downer.... (With the exception of "Summer" and even thats debateable "
[Show spoiler]This is NOT a love story
" )

Good call on the Girlfriend Experience though! I thought that movie was great but I completely forgot about it......

Special Shoutouts that just missed the list: Up In The Air, The Girlfriend Experience, Drag Me To Hell and UP
I think the idea was to do top 5 American films, so The White Ribbon and Broken Embraces wouldn't count. The White Ribbon was great though, and I really want to see Broken Embraces.

Am I the only person that didn't love Inglorious Basterds? Tarantino movies are always fun and interesting, but I wasn't too crazy about it. It had some moments of greatness, but overall I thought it was a bit of a mess. I'm not a huge Brad Pitt fan to begin with, but I definitely did not like him in this.

No, you're not...

If I felt like watching a Tarantino movie, it would most definitely be the last out of his collection that I'd sit down and watch(well, besides Grindhouse).

Unbelievably overrated film.

Definitely. And the sad thing is, the last line of the film, which is basically Tarantino telling the audience that he thinks this is his "masterpiece" is disappointing, because this most definitely is not. I hope this isn't what we should expect from him in the future.

While I've yet to see everything I want to from '09, here's my list (in no particular order):
  • (500) Days of Summer
  • Inglourious Basterds (Certainly not Tarantino's best work, but I'm a sucker for anything Tarantino)
  • Moon
  • Up in the Air
  • Zombieland

Honorable mentions would include: District 9, The Hurt Locker, State of Play, Up, and Watchmen (among others).

Cool, I have yet to see Mixed Blood. 80's film I believe. Kind of different from the other ones.

The Canterbury Tales:

Arabian Nights:

I always recommend Fellini's Casanova, but this disc has proven to be very difficult to obtain in recent months:

Tony Richardson's The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is also a fantastic package:

Karel Reisz's gritty British New Wave classic Saturday Night and Sunday Morning also comes highly recommended:

Luis Bunuel's Belle de jour should find a spot in your library:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Belle...-Blu-ray/5819/

Anthony Minghella's Breaking and Entering is also one of my favorite BDs:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Break...y/2563/#Review

Brief Encounter is yet to be released in North America as well:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Brief...y/3243/#Review

I strongly recommend this recent Oscar winner as well:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Depar...y/9908/#Review

David Lynch's Inland Empire is a film that has divided audiences, but I think that it is absolutely incredible:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Inlan.../10205/#Review

La haine, one of the most influential contemporary French films (together with Ma 6-T va crack-er, it started the banlieue genre)

Another very influential French film:

Wong Kar-Wai's My Blueberry Nights, a beautiful, sensual film:

Picnic at Hanging Rock: So far, the Release of the Year for me!

Profound Desires of the Gods - Imamura's film is exclusive to Blu-ray:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Profo...y/9926/#Review

French director Albert Lamorisse's Le ballon rouge is a Region-Free release, but it is one of the treasures in my collection. You should have it as well
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-R...y/6245/#Review

The Red Road, a great contemporary drama, winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, by a director who seems to be following Ken Loach's steps:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Red-R...y/7939/#Review

Shane Meadow's best film:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/This-...-Blu-ray/1725/

Elite Squad, winner of Golden Bear at the Berlinale. Very controversial film:

etc....

And if you are interested in SDVDs, you should probably PM me so that we do not clutter this thread

Its available region-locked from France, no English subs for the Japanese. Germany's releasing one soon (already?) that will probably be similar. I communicated with the US folks and they said no. I think maybe...we'll see.
