I would really love to see Raise the Red Lantern on Blu-ray. MGM released a decent DVD (aside from the terrible cover) a few years ago; it would be great if they could license it to Criterion or something. I have the remastered HK DVD, and it isn't bad, but a Blu-ray would be a no-brainer.

So when I go to the head page
http://www.criterion.com/films/27527-head

and it says "Spine #544"

How is that not having spine numbers?

Do you mean there are no spine numbers on the front cover art? Spine numbers never go on the front cover.

Yep, I know spine numbers aren't on the front. I was looking for the number on their web page. I had yet to find them because I'm at work and didn't get a chance to thoroughly check the page.

I see them now though- thank you

Anyone else find it a bit odd that the Breathless blu-ray is housed in a cardboard box set like it's DVD counterpart yet only has one disc, unlike other cardboard boxed blu-rays such as The Leopard?

Maybe releases from this point on will be digipack regardless of no. of discs?

Not true, as this image of The Thin Red Line that Criterion tweeted this morning indicates

http://ow.ly/i/3H4r/original

Maybe there is a really big booklet or something in the Breathless blu-ray.

Has anyone noticed that the release date of Charade on blu-ray.com may be inaccurate? It's dated for the 14th of September. But on other sites it's the 21st.

According to Criterion's site it should be the 21st. I hav too much to buy on the 14th for sure... but Check out some Best Buy's if they are stocking the title they usually break street dates on most Criterion titles. I love it. Looks like according to their site right now that BREATHLESS won't be stocked at BB so there goes my fun on that title.

Don't find it odd at all. The dvd (even though 2-disc) is one of the fan favs. So why screw with that? Who cares about the people who cry about wanting all plastic cases for blu. There dvds are all different shapes and sizes, so it's nothing new.

Indeed. I don't mind it, I prefer the newer, sturdier digipacks they used for The Leopard and By Brakhage. Just seemed random, but yes, it is indeed a fan favorite. Can't wait to get my hands on it this Tuesday, then The Thin Red Line (one of my top ten favorite films of all time ) later this month!

Just to also put, I don't think they will put the one-disc digipacks on future new releases. Prob only on past titles that have dvd digi's that will be upgraded to blu (like Breathless, and maybe Pandora's Box, Two-Lane Blacktop, My Own Private Idaho, etc).

Digi or plastic is fine with me. As long as they never go back to OG cardboard disaster.

Sorry for being so late to your post, but - you are exactly correct. From Zhang's early work, I've seen To Live and Red Lantern. Two absolutely beautiful and devastating films. (I've been to Pingyao, the town where Lantern was filmed.) But hey, I'm left wondering whether the Beijing Opening Ceremonies will ever be released in Blu.
Well the good news is that many of Zhang Yimou's films have at least been released in good DVD editions by Sony Classics and MGM. On the other hand, the films of interesting and challenging directors such as Hou Xiaoxian and Tsai Mingliang have been dumped onto DVD in poor quality transfers on labels such as Fox Lorber - or haven't been released on DVD at all.

Criterion would be greatly in our debt if they could somehow get the Blu-ray rights to films such as A City Of Sadness, Flowers Of Shanghai, The River, The Hole, What Time Is It There - and I could list several more.

I don't mind. When it came to selling off my Breathless DVD, I was expecting them to put the Blu-ray in the usual case and regretted losing the beautiful artwork on the set. This'll be a nice compromise.

I'm keeping my dvd for 2 reasons:

1. I never sell my movies. Especially Godard.

2. I am going to fold out the dvd set to look like the pic below (but with the thing folded to where the pic connects) and sit it with my dvds/blus like a picture right in the middle of my collection. I am thinking about doing that with other digipak dvds that I upgrade to blu in the future. Makes my collection have little film stills. Will look nice.

Oh yeah, speaking of the Breathless print, I was wanting Rialto Pictures to bring it to Louisville Kentucky by posting about it here.

Well I looked on their site a couple days ago and saw that in November, Breathless will be coming to Kentucky............Lexington.

So it looks like I won't make that, unless I want to have a 2-3 hour drive to get there in the winter. Crap, so close. Almost a tease.

Edit: isn't Louisville about 75 miles from Lexington?
