Either way, I might just have to move to Lexington. This place is showing Five Easy Pieces tonight, in 2 weeks Murnau's Sunrise, and in November Breathless. Plus I could be closer to the UK Wildcats. A win-win.

I don't follow sports much any more but used to love watching Pitino's UK teams play.

Yeah, and now he coaches the enemy. I live in enemy territory, but there are prob 50-50 Cats fans & UofL fans in Louisville anyways. UK has a huge fanbase.

What a coincidence because my family always had the same split. A good chunk of my family lived in Louisville until my grandparents moved to Florida in the early 1970's. My grandmother graduated from Louisville back in the 1940's and my uncle (grandmother's brother) graduated from University of Kentucky in the late 40's. He also played on Kentucky's football team which just happened to be coached by the legendary Bear Bryant at that time. Hard to believe it nowadays but Kentucky had a top-notch football team back in the 40's-50's.

Anyone else pick up Image Entertainment's "Mona Lisa" Blu-ray (former criterion dvd)? Was curious how the blu-ray compared to criterion's dvd. The blu-ray was my first viewing & I enjoyed the film very much.

Just read the review which had a little comparing of the criterion dvd:

Thanks for sharing that Chad. Yeah, it's hard to believe Kentucky was good at football nowadays, though, really we get our season's high when we beat Louisville (4th time straight just this past weekend). Also the past couple years we gave some top SEC teams upsets on National T.V.. It's weird having a top-notch basketball team to root for, then an underdog football team.

I picked up Mona Lisa and The Long Good Friday(Bob Hoskins too, and just as good as Mona Lisa if you haven't seen it) but I haven't had the chance to watch them yet. the reviews said that the quality is good, but nothing amazing. The price was right and the Criterion discs were non-anamorphic. That makes the upgrade a no-brainer for me. All of my non-anamorphic stuff looks like crap zoomed on my TV.

Yeah I was satisfied with the Blu-ray. I picked up Time Bandits also. Will look into The Long Good Friday next!

What with all the Godard talk, here's a little bit on him finally being "found", since many assumed he was "missing". Turns out, he was just out and about in his hyundai.

An email from Jon Mulvaney explains the reason why Breathless was given a Digipak...

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your email and kind words!

In response to your question, the packaging for BREATHLESS is thinner than that of THE LEOPARD. In general, we are releasing our Blu-rays in plastic cases (as we've found them to be more durable), however, in the case of BREATHLESS, there is a special printed booklet better housed by the digipack style. I have to say, I think the packaging for this release looks awesome!

I hope this information helps! Thanks for supporting Criterion and please feel free to let me know if you have any more questions!

Best,

Jon Mulvaney

-Dave

again..... many people complain of edge-enhancement with Criterion films.... I am fortunate in the sense that I'm not too sensitive to it (being it doesn't bother me unless it's VERY excessive) unlike DNR, which drives me mad..... Something that Criterion isn't accused of.....

Some people notice the issues.... others state Criterion is vastly overrated, and produces junk (I think those people are negative for the sake of being argumentative however....)

Haters gonna hate.

In all seriousness, there have been a few Criterion releases that I can't say I was incredibly impressed by, but part of that is not being familiar with how the film looked before the blu-ray or remastered dvd treatment. I personally have found that Criterion's black and white releases always look better to me than the majority of their color releases, but I think that has something to do with criterion's restoration and transfer process, and possibly the notion that EE works better for B&W films. But who knows. I wasn't incredibly impressed with the transfers on Red Desert or Walkabout (though I have to note that the improvement on Walkabout from the previous dvd is substantial) but Days of Heaven, the recent IFC releases, and Benjamin Button were all gorgeous. I guess it depends on a film by film basis. Some films just won't ever look amazing simply due to the damage to the original prints, if an original print even still exists.

Amazon Prime is always shipped via UPS or FedEx, and if you pre-ordered with two day shipping for release day delivery, they will ship it sometime between Friday and Sunday, and it will arrive on the day of release.

Well since it's your mom, I might do it for free, but only if she promises to make me feel guilty afterwards...

Waiting on pins and needles for next week as I want to see if Criterion have enough up their sleeve to match--or even top--the November slate.

Reading this board and this thread, I find it interesting at some of the movies people spend their hard-earned money to actually purchase. I love watching Criterion discs, although I have to admit most of them are definitely one-time viewing films for me. I confess, though, I am tempted to buy some Blu-rays myself in the near future, but for now I'm holding off from pulling the trigger. At the same time, my bank account will be begging for mercy next month as a result of the tickets I purchased for the Toronto International Film Festival that begins this evening. Seventeen screenings (so far)! Yikes!
