Top one also, same reason - the bottom one is too contrasty. Look at the sky where the trees are, its all blown out

When are you going to tell us the bottom one is the Criterion and the top one is the SC?

Well the SC review says he prefers the SC over Criterions' (of course Criterion's is the top one). I can see what he likes about it, but side by side, the Criterion has more details and the SC's contrast is too bright.

Reading his review, then seeing these shots made me want to post them here to see other people's take. Not saying he is wrong (it's opinions so please don't think I did this because of that). I'm just curious as to see other's opinions.

I'm not hating on your opinion Pro-B. Others might like it too. I'm just seeing opinions. I already have the Criterion one anyways. It's just being curious. The SC version reminds me of the Steamboat Bill Jr transfer by Kino.

This one was on the Criterion's review (you got them backwards in your post)

On the other hand (from what I remember of the DVDBeaver review) the Criterion Third Man vs the SC Third Man is the other way around - the Criterion is more contrasty. Oddly, I prefer the Criterion image on that film also

I did not think you were I just wanted to point out that there are some trade offs - and the contrast boosting is actually what I dislike about the Canal release. I think, however, that some of the gentle noise reduction that is apparent on the Criterion release may be what some people would dislike.

Either way, these are very good releases. Pick whichever you like better, but make sure you have a copy of Breathless in your library.

Yeah, it's just opinions on what you like. No hate to Pro-B at all (so please Pro-B, don't think that is what I'm doing). Just trying to see opinions on the transfers to a film by my fav director. That's all.

SC review:

Look at the detail you lose in the SC, on his face and in his shirt. I'm not sure it makes a huge difference, but the Criterion is definitely better

Yeah, didn't like it much. Mostly just made me wonder what Kubrick would have done with it.

Eberts list of the best is actually one of the best lists, and frankly, most accurate lists as to what is a great and classic film by definition.
I don't necessarily agree with his opinions (I found myself more in line with Siskel's), but I really do enjoy Ebert's writing. Whether he's praising or trashing, or doing a character piece, find his style appealing. Haven't really checked out his website, though, mostly just Sneak Previews etc, and a fair number of his books. His website is one of those things I keep meaning to check out but hardly ever do.

Well, I actually belive Kubrick asked Spielberg to direct it, saying he would probably have a better touch on this type of story -- it being more of an adventure tale. He was adamant on being involved as a producer, though. Kubrick wanted the vignette and poster's to read "Stanley Kubrick Presents... A Steven Spielberg Picture." (From a Charlie Rose interview, I think.)

As for actual change -- I have read Kubrick did want to end the story at the bottom of the sea, with the Ferris Wheel, 20-30 minutes before Spielberg chose to.

I feel like I can see the bones of the Kubrick film in there, but it contains so many of the things about Spielberg that make my hair stand on end, not the least of which is the fetishisation of fatherless moppet, for me to enjoy any of it. The only stuff that makes me go "ooooo" is straight out of the concept art.

For the off topic record, I think Spielberg is probably the greatest "set piece" director alive, just look at the Jurassic Park movies. But I think Raiders, which is really a gleeful collection of set pieces, is the only of his movies that doesn't have at least one moment when I just want to turn it off.

I'm curious what everyone thinks is "top priority" for some of the big name directors (at least some with the most films in CC) in the collection.

In other words, what do you think CC would issue on blu-ray next from them?

Godard- Band of Outsiders
Truffaut- Jules and Jim (though i'd love too see Day for Night first).
Kurosawa- Rashomon (newly restored, the print is terrific, too!)
Bergman- Wild Strawberries
Renoir- The River
P&P- Life and Death of Col. Blimp (it's inevitable for BR)
Fellini- Amacord (Would love Nights of Cabiria though ).
Ozu- Tokyo Story (Ozu is due for blu in CC)

I agree. Ebert is one of my favorites to read because of his writing style and his ability to really explain his opinion on a film. I don't bother reading most movie reviews because I feel most critics don't know how to actually explain their views on a film, and they spend way too much time talking about the plot as oppose to what they thought about the finished product. I don't read reviews to decide if I want to see a movie. In fact, I never read a review for a film until after I've seen it. At that point I have my own opinion and I am just looking to see what other people think as well, and I don't get that out of plot recap. And I'm not looking for people to agree with me. I find myself not in agreement at all with most reviews, but if you can explain to me why you feel how you feel, I can respect that different view entirely.

A.O. Scott at the NY Times is another of my favorites to read. His writing style is fantastic and generally fun. I also enjoyed Nathan Lee as a writer, though I haven't read anything by him in forever. Basically since he stopped writing for the Voice (is he back? I don't know.)

I wouldn't hold your breath, the DVD was issued in the UK by Sanctuary and I don't think they've issued anything on blu even if they still have the rights. They also managed to issue the slightly censored print that was issued around the time of JFK's assassination, extras were good though. It's been issued on DVD in Europe by a wide variety of obscure labels so maybe its time for that multi region blu player. The blu has had a very favourable review at DVDBeaver and I'm really looking forward to it.
