30 bucks a movie is steep, but i really dont want to wait 6 months for a deep discount/barnes and noble sale to happen again
The standard price for 1 disc Criterion Blu-Rays is $25.99 at Family Video. I believe shipped is a flat $0.99 regardless of number purchased. Outside of sales this seems to be the best price. I've made a lot of purchases from them and they are very reliable.

With all the great titles released this month and what is coming next month I almost forgot that the original King Kong comes to blu tomorrow.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/King-.../11236/#Review

And by that review it looks like it is the best we will see it look...unless criterion were able to get it back in their collection....

Although many of us can not participate since we are not living in the UK, here is a contest for the Guardian and Observer. Can you name all 26 films:

Seven Samurai is going to he HUGE for Criterion Blu-ray. After all, it is the best selling Criterion film (last time I checked) and obviously a terrific film.

Its a Bonnie and Clyde type of story. Loser guy meets girl, they rob places, girl betrays guy and kills him. With a detective side story.

Its been done to death but the script has some unique things going on with it. Its not my story, I'm the cinematographer.

sobbart, make sure you release it on Blu-Ray w/lossless audio

back to 7Sam. read through the specs for both Blu-Ray vs. 3Disc DVD release (which i have). while i'm not going to get rid of the DVD (so i can lend it to friends to enlighten them), i assume everything is safely ported over to the Blu-Ray? what's not clear is if any of the bonus stuff will be in HD =(

If we have enough money left in the budget after its all said and done we are going to go back to the telecine place and make an HD master of the finished cut....I mean its going to screen at the Newport film festival, so its gotta look as best it can. And super 16 will beat out HD digital any day of the week:]

And yes I am elitist here. Film will always be > then digital

As for Del Toro: I love when directors of today show their knowledge of and affection for those that came before them. Usually these directors also make great films!
I guess you don't know when I was born Shell! I was born in 1958 and pretty much grew up with the Beatles. My folks didn't "appreciate" their music, until my Dad heard one of their songs on a "muzak" radio station in the early 70s and asked, "Who wrote this music...it's wonderful!" Go figure?!

Yeah...Del Toro seems like a pretty cool guy!

Total Threadcrap here.

No Criterion content (well maybe a little, tangentially), no hi-def content. Just wanted to drop a line about Icarus Films SD DVD releases. The BIG news is Max Ophul's Hotel Terminus is finally coming to DVD on October 26th, 2-disc, 267 minutes. They also just released something called Middletown which is from a PBS series in the early 80's directed by (Criterion Connection alert) Peter Davis, probably best know for Hearts And Minds spine #156. It's a Socio-doc about the middle class in Muncie (probably an acquired taste). They've also released Our Daily Bread, put you off your food doc, Rocky Road To Dublin, a portrait of Ireland in the 60s, and The Battle Of Chile, about Allende/Pinochet. Lot of provacative docs that might slip under your radar. Here's their Home Video homepage.

Watched Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence last night. I had never even heard of it before I read all the discussion on this thread when it was announced on blu-ray by Criterion. Very good movie and an excellent addition to my (or anyone else's) collection.

By the way, I've been an Amazon Prime member for 3 years now and I believe this is the first pre-order I've ever gotten 1 day before release date. Merry Christmas and The Thin Red Line arrived in the mail (another first) yesterday.

Watched Del Toro raid their blu-rays. Click to watch. He got The Magician so early! More excited about that than SS, I think.

I thought I would love this film, but I wasn't too thrilled by it all. I wanted to like it a lot more.. I still will hold onto my copy of it for sure.

Are you thrilled by any of the other Oshima output that Criterion has released, PP?
